Book Review: The Auspicious Troubles of Chance (The Auspicious Troubles of Love Book 1) – Charlie Cochet

Published June 20, 2012
Format: Novel
Genre And Theme: LGBT, Historical Romance
Length: 172 pages, ebook
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Ebook ISBN: 9781613725573
Characters: Chance Irving, Jacky Valentine

I’ve had this title for the longest time now and I’m not sure why I ‘ve totally forgotten about it since I bought it (along with Charlie’s previous works) after reading the author’s mega hit series, THIRDS. But while waiting for the last book of the THIRDS series, I decided to read Charlie’s back catalogue and here I am telling you about this beautiful story – pre-THIRDS success of the author.

Blurb: Chance Irving is a young man with a gift for getting into trouble-not surprising, as trouble is all he’s ever known. After losing everything he held dear one fateful night, he decides to leave New York and his past behind, and joins the French Foreign Legion. But even in Algiers, Chance can’t seem to shake his old ways, and he ends up being transferred to a unit made up of misfits and rabble-rousers like him-a unit he finds just in time to be captured and thrown into a cell with his new commandant, Jacky Valentine. A highly respected commandant with a soft spot for hard luck cases, Jacky is the kind of guy who would go to war for you, and the three equally troubled youths from his unit he’s more or less adopted feel the same way about him. Suddenly Chance starts to think that his life doesn’t have to be as desolate and barren as the wastelands around him. But even after their escape, with the promise of a future with Jacky to buoy his spirits, or maybe because of it, Chance can’t stop making mistakes. He disobeys orders, lashes out at the boys in Jacky’s care, and blazes a trail of self-destruction across the desert-until someone makes him realize he’s hurting more than just himself.

A Timeless Dreams title: While reaction to same-sex relationships throughout time and across cultures has not always been positive, these stories celebrate M/M love in a manner that may address, minimize, or ignore historical stigma

I just have to say that I absolutely adore Chauncey Irving aka Chance. He’s a fascinating character that you’d root for onset of the story. I loved his sass, his vulnerability, and his overall personality. He’s just so endearing as a child and as a trouble magnet adult. For fans of Dexter Daley – it is very easy to conclude that Charlie does have a prototype when it comes to his main characters. Chance is basically Dex’s twin brother from another era.

Then we have Jacky – good ol’ Jacky who have a soft spot for the cases like Jacky and his gangly unit of three troubled youths whom I equally adore like Jacky and Chance.

The story is fast-paced and very affecting at times. The blossoming relationship of Jacky and Chance is what the millenials are now calling #relationshipgoals  which made me swoon and tear up a bit!

I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a feel good read about second chances in life and love.

The X Factor UK 2017 – Week 6 Recap – Girls’ Six Chair Challenge

Last Saturday was just a continuation of the Bootcamp challenge where the hopefuls sang individually in front of the judges and a live audience.  Early favorites like Grace Davies, Tracyleanne Jefford, Daniel Quick and bruiser Anthony Russell (such a shame he was kicked off the show) all gave stunning performances!

Then Sunday comes the Six Chair Challenge for the girls. I am now starting to doubt this category. I initially thought that this was the strongest category this year but I’ve a feeling that Grace Davies will be the last girl standing from this group and I’ve a feeling that she won’t even make the top 5. It’s a good thing that she’s so good she might just end up with a recording contract from Simon.

She’s obviously the strongest in this category performing her own song called “Don’t Go.”

She’s got the making of Adele isn’t she?

The beautiful Holly Tandy will also be going through the judges house for her performance.

Not really sold on this performance but she’s like the Britain’s Sweetheart… She’s definitely the Janet Devlin of this season.

Georgina Panton is amazing as usual but sadly for her, she’s not getting any traction from the audience as far as I can see…

Deanna Mussington is very likable but I’m not sure if she’s at the level of Grace to even make the live show.

Youngster Rai-Elle Rai-Elle Williams had to fight for her chair when she was forced to have a sing-off with Alisah Bonaobra and  Scarlett Lee. She sang a song about Jesus and promptly made it. I thought she should’ve been eliminated if I’m being honest.

And last but not the least is Alisah from the Philippines. I am all for giving my support to my home girl Alisah but truth be told, I just don’t think that the judges like her especially Simon and Sharon. Unfortunately, she’s under Sharon’s category so I’ve a feeling that she won’t make the live show. Oh well…

My Top 3: Grace, Holly and Georgina obviously.

Who do you think will make it to the live show?

Book Review: Invictus – Ryan Graudin

Published September 26, 2017
Format: Novel
Genre And Theme: Young Adult, Science Fiction, Time Travel, Alternate Universe
Length: 464 pages, ebook
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Ebook SBN13: 9780316503136
Characters: Farway Gaius McCarthy

Blurb: Time flies when you’re plundering history.

Farway Gaius McCarthy was born outside of time. The son of a time-traveling Recorder from 2354 AD and a gladiator living in Rome in 95 AD, Far’s birth defies the laws of nature. Exploring history himself is all he’s ever wanted, and after failing his final time-traveling exam, Far takes a position commanding a ship with a crew of his friends as part of a black market operation to steal valuables from the past.

But during a heist on the sinking Titanic, Far meets a mysterious girl who always seems to be one step ahead of him. Armed with knowledge that will bring Far’s very existence into question, she will lead Far and his team on a race through time to discover a frightening truth: History is not as steady as it seems.

The first book I’ve read from Ryan Graudin was Wolf by Wolf which thoroughly impressed me. The author created an alternate reality post World War 2 in which the Axis Power won the bloodiest war in human history. With that premise, I didn’t think she’d be able to top it. But lo and behold – another time-related world has been created by her genius and it’s nothing short of amazing!

I loved time-travel stories and I am an avid fan of history so this is definitely a double-win for me!

As for  its characters, I thought it would’ve been tricky for the author because of the multiple point of views of most, if not all of the characters in the book. Usually, I tend to veer away from such style but Ryan just know how to do it right. I love the core team comprising the Invictus. They are all likable except for one. There’s Far’s cousin Imogen whose penchant for hair color is the focal point of her character aside from being the Historian of the team. Gram is the genius engineer.  Priya is the medic and Far’s love interest.  And their newest member, Eliot – the mysterious girl who annoyed me to pieces. Her character just didn’t clicked with me no matter how the author tried to justify her existence.

One of the focal points of the story is its time travel aspect throughout history. There wasn’t much really. Most of their adventures were off-page but I loved how Graudin tried to insert minute details in them . I wished that some of them were longer but I appreciate the fact that the author didn’t indulge too much because methinks it might drag the story somehow.

The ending was a bit anticlimactic but satisfying nonetheless. I felt some sort of relief when I finished it but really, I wanted a longer epilogue. Or maybe, I just want more from this universe because it’s just so fascinating. I cannot recommend this highly enough and I think at this point, overall –  it’s got to be the best book I’ve read this year.

Cover Thursday – Lorde’s Liability by Matty Queen Bee

I dare you to to watch the full video.  It’s fucking incredible!  This was posted last March 2017 but I’ve had the “Melodrama” album by Lorde just last July and fell for this song and the rest of the album eventually. And just this weekend, I was binge-watching covers of the songs in the album and stumbled upon this again, fucking incredible cover! Click away now you bitches…

One, two

Baby really hurt me
Crying in the taxi
He don’t wanna know me
Says he made the big mistake of dancing in my storm
Says it was poison
So I guess I’ll go home
Into the arms of the girl that I love
The only love I haven’t screwed up
She’s so hard to please
But she’s a forest fire
I do my best to meet her demands
Play at romance, we slow dance
In the living room, but all that a stranger would see
Is one girl swaying alone
Stroking her cheek

They say, “You’re a little much for me
You’re a liability
You’re a little much for me”
So they pull back, make other plans
I understand, I’m a liability
Get you wild, make you leave
I’m a little much for
E-a-na-na-na, everyone

The truth is I am a toy
That people enjoy
‘Til all of the tricks don’t work anymore
And then they are bored of me
I know that it’s exciting
Running through the night, but
Every perfect summer’s
Eating me alive until you’re gone
Better on my own

They say, “You’re a little much for me
You’re a liability
You’re a little much for me”
So they pull back, make other plans
I understand, I’m a liability
Get you wild, make you leave
I’m a little much for
E-a-na-na-na, everyone

They’re gonna watch me
Disappear into the sun
You’re all gonna watch me
Disappear into the sun

XOXO,

The X Factor UK 2017 – Week 5 Recap – My ‘Bootcamp’ Favorites!

It’s taken me half the week to finally have time to watch each performance and I’ve to say that I am more than impressed with the talent that went through last week and will be battling it out on next episode’s Six Chair Challenge.

The first stage of the bootcamp was The Wall of Songs were 35 songs are offered for those who made it through the audition round and will sing it as a group in front of the panel. Most of the performances were cringe-worthy if I’m being honest.

And like what Simon said which I wholeheartedly agree with, Grace Davies group who sang Say You Won’t Let Go by James Arthur was one of the better groups –  if not the only decent one.

My Four Potential Winners

1. Matt Linnen is definitely leading the pack this season. He’s very good looking and has a really good vocals – not very current but marktable enough. He’s like the better and hotter version of Matt Cardle.

2. Sean and Connor Price – if there is one act that could potentially derails Matt’s winning the title, then it could be them. They are very charismatic and very current and has decent voices. Plus, we need to have a new pop group/duo sensation to top the charts worldwide and I really, really believe they could do it.

3. Holly Tandy is a surprise for me. I didn’t think she could pull off Sign of the Time by Harry Styles. She’s my favorite amongst the girls this season.

4. Berget Lewis is again, flawless. I’m just not sure right now how relatable she is with the audience.

The rest are just so-so for me. The CutKelvins and Grace Davies didn’t really And I am not even going to mention Alisa Bonaobra begging for a second chance. I mean, she’s a good singer but I find it unfair for the other girls who weren’t given another chance only because they didn’t beg and cry on stage. It was really awkward to watch.

One of my early favorites, Anthony Russell made it through the first round but had to withdraw since he admitted that he was on drugs during the audition. He was apparently asked to leave and come back next year, clean. I’m hoping he’d come back tho.

Who are your favorites this year?

Book Review: Love in Retrograde – Charlie Cochet

Published May 11, 2016
Format: Novella
Genre And Theme: LGBT, Science Fiction
Length: 73 pages, ebook
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Ebook SBN13: 9781634772150
Characters: Kelly Sutton, Mars

Blurb: Enthusiastic, play-it-safe Kelly Sutton is an American intern at the Photonic Royal Society in New London. He’s been working on Project Mars for over a year, a mission kept so secret by the Society even Kelly doesn’t know exactly what it is. What Kelly does know is his contribution to the task will benefit mankind, and that’s enough for him.

Kelly’s world turns upside down when concerns over his mentor’s behavior lead Kelly to investigate and stumble upon a wicked truth. What is supposed to be a project to advance human life turns out to be an endeavor capable of mass destruction. The terrifying reality forces Kelly to choose between looking the other way to keep his job, as he’s always done, or risking his career and even his life to do the right thing by saving the man who’s captured his heart.

***

I’ve been reading some titles from Charlie’s back catalogue and I realized that I haven’t posted here about this lovely novella. I actually gave this a five star ratings on Goodreads and here’s the short review I’ve posted on said site:

Mars and Kelly are just the cutest ever! This is definitely a classic Charlie Cochet style! I loved the super adorable characterization. The usual Dex/Sloane characters formula is everything! I loved Mars and how he ‘fell in love’ with Kelly even before meeting him. What a precious AI-hunk! The whole story was quick but it doesn’t feel rushed. Now, I really want to read the story of Lucius and Jordan so I hope Charlie’s planning to write one.

My Book Haul: September 2017!

This is my first time sharing my book haul from a certain period of time and this one is just from last month! I often buy books from thrift shops, book sales and from the three leading book stores in the country – the National Book Store, Fully Booked and Powerbooks. Mostly, from National Book Store because they are more varied and they tend to be way cheaper for some reason! Haha! So without further ado, let me present to you these titles!

From this haul, I’ve already read three of the series via ebooks (The 5th Wave, The Maze Runner series, and the Reckoners)  but it’s really nice to have copies which I’ve got for very affordable prices!

I’ve scored Another Day by David Levithan for P299 only which is also the most expensive from this haul but considering it’s regularly priced at 499 on paperback and I’ve the hardbound copy… I know right?

The other titles if you cannot read them on the image are:
For P100
1. The Best of the Morning Rush Top 10 with Chico, Delamar and Gino Volume 3

For P199 each from the National Book Store
Hardbound Editions
1. Black Ice – Becca Fitzpartick (
2. Five Kingdoms Series (1-4) – Brandon Mull
3. The Infinite Sea (The 5th Wave, Book 2) – Rick Yancey
4. Jardhead – Anthony Swofford

Paperback
1. Love Letters to the Dead – Ava Delaira
2. Steelheart (The Reckoners, Book 1) – Brandon Sanderson
3. The Bane Chronicles – Cassandra Clare
4. The 5th Wave (The 5th Wave, Book 2) – Rick Yancey
5. The Scorch Trials (The Maze Runner, Book 2) – James Dashner

For P99 each from the National Book Store
1. The Lord of Opium (Matteo Alacran, Book 2) – Nancy Farmer
2. Struck by Lightning – Chris Colfer

For P39 each from Chapters & Pages
1. Mystic River – Dennis Lehane
2. The Vineyard – Barbara Delinsky

I’ve always wanted to read a Delinsky novel because I’ve been seeing her name since I started reading books from Belva Plain and Rosamunde Pilcher – I’m pretty excited, hopefully this first one would a great experience!

So that sums up my book haul post! I’ve already started with Struck by Lightning and it’s already looking great!

What are you reading now?

The X Factor UK 2017 – My Top 12 Acts

Disregarding their respective categories, here are my Top 12 favorite acts for this season!

My numero uno is Berget Lewis. She’s simple unbelievable! The world need to hear her voice!

2. Anthony Russell – He’s the most likable contestant this year and he’s got a very unique sound!!! Totally rooting for this guy!

3. Grace Davies is Adele 2.0! Let’s see if the UK public feel the same way.

4. Matt Linnen. Drop Dead Gorg. Physically and that fucking sexy voice!

5. Tracy Leanne Jefford – She’s going to be Berget’s biggest competition in the overs category! Beautiful, classy and utterly charismatic!

6. Sean and Connor Price. I’m already guessing them advancing into the semis!

7. Kevin Davy White. The male version of Berget. Non-UK singer with a big voice!

8. Chloe Rose Moyle. Just because she’s cute and a better substitute for Taylor Swift.

9. Jack & Joel. I just thought they’re real fun. Let them in if Clique *high kick* won’t make it.

10. The Cutkelvins. Same a Chloe’s. Good eyecandy. The girl would have to be solo though. Real talk only.

11. Rebecca Grace. Too similar with Grace but still, she’s got a fantastic set of pipes!

12. Sam Black. Will either be in a group or solo. Either way, he’s going to make it!

Special Mention: The supe adorable Jordan Rabjohn whom I can already see being eliminated and getting ask to join a group…

The X Factor UK 2017 – Week 4 Recap – The Best Auditions

Okay, so I’ll just be posting here whom I thought the best acts are in the last week of this season’s audition rounds. And I am telling you, this last batch collectively is the weakest but perhaps has the stronger ‘singer’ in the competition. Doesn’t mean he/she/they’ll win tho…okay, let me stop. I am refering ofcourse to Berget Lewis. She’s a star from the get go and has a phenomenal voice! She’s a well known soul singer from her “small country,” The Netherlands ad has released a couple of albums back in 2007 and 2013.

For her X Factor UK audition, she sung Prince’s Purple Rain and damn, mama took me to church!!!! Prince must be hella proud!

Then we have two cuties – both vying for Nicole’s attention lol! Brad Howard and Matt Linen. There’s no question that Matt Linnen is the strongest singer between them and he’d definitely move forward in the competition.

Then there’s Alisah Bonaobra – my homegirl who came all the way from here (The Philippines). She’s good but not the best in the competition if I may say so.

Who are your favorites from the last batch of auditions?
