Book Review: All Kinds of Tied Down (Marshals, #1) – Mary Calmes

Published: July 24, 2014
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Format: Novel
Genre And Theme: LGBTQ, Romance, Thriller, Action
Length: 290 pages, ebook
Characters: Miro Jones, Ian Doyle

Blurb: Deputy US Marshal Miro Jones has a reputation for being calm and collected under fire. These traits serve him well with his hotshot partner, Ian Doyle, the kind of guy who can start a fight in an empty room. In the past three years of their life-and-death job, they’ve gone from strangers to professional coworkers to devoted teammates and best friends. Miro’s cultivated blind faith in the man who has his back… faith and something more.

As a marshal and a soldier, Ian’s expected to lead. But the power and control that brings Ian success and fulfillment in the field isn’t working anywhere else. Ian’s always resisted all kinds of tied down, but having no home—and no one to come home to—is slowly eating him up inside. Over time, Ian has grudgingly accepted that going anywhere without his partner simply doesn’t work. Now Miro just has to convince him that getting tangled up in heartstrings isn’t being tied down at all.

I’ve read quite a few books from Mary Calmes and I’m generally satisfied with everything I’ve read from her. I find her writing exceptionally fun and consistent.

This is another one of those fun stories. Fun because I enjoyed devouring each and every page of it. Miro and Ian are a match made in heaven for me. You can feel the chemistry between them from the get-go. They actually reminded me a bit of Ty and Zane.

I loved Miro’s backstory. It’s a very fascinating background and I’d really like for the author to dig deeper into this. A story that has something to do with his obvious Easter European ancestry perhaps? Lol. This was released four years as the first book of a series and the fourth one is about to be release two months from now, so that “digging deeper” on Miro’s backstory is merely wishful thinking on my end.. Hah!

Ian as the total opposite of Miro’s character is very much swoony just like the way Miro was describing him. I thought he’s real funny and I absolutely adore his voice. His temper and straightforward approach with things are a fun to read especially with his interaction with Miro.

I also loved the timeline of the story here. You can actually feel the progression in the story and its characters. I loved the different angles provided by the author for its future release to expound. There’s the serial killer, th witsec kids and interesting characters that we may see in the author’s future/other books.

I’d definitely read the next books off this series!

Book Review: The Grim Life (The Grim Life #1) – K.D. Worth

Published March 12, 2015
Format: Novel
Genres and Themes: Young Adult, Fiction, LGBT, Death, Suicide, Religion
Length: 180 pages, ebook
Publisher: Harmony Ink Press
Ebook ASIN/ISBN: 1632168928 (ISBN13: 9781632168924)
Characters: Max, Slade, Kody Michaels

I abso-freakin’-lutely loved this story! It started when Max lost his life on prom night and he was recruited as a ‘reaper’ by a very mysterious ‘angel’ named Slade. Three years after joining the group of teenage reapers, he was assigned his very first suicide case and that’s when he defied the number one rule of his job – saving a life!

After failing his first suicide attempt, Kody is determine to end it all by jumping off a bridge. Until Max intervened and made him realized that there’s got to be more to life.

I had so much fun reading this one because it’s an interesting premise with charming characters. I loved Max’s character the most because he was very likable and relatable. I loved that he wears his heart on his sleeve.

I also want to give poor Kody the tightest hug ever and let him know that it’s gonna be alright. Such a darling boy. I’m excited to learn more about the mystery of his character.

It’s interesting how the author tackled sensitive topics like suicide, gay conversion therapy, religion and bigotry. These are issues you’d rather avoid in a book but the author was able to breeze through it in a way that doesn’t sound preachy and all that shit.

It was a well-built world where we get to see “reapers” differently. Although there’s still the usual bad guys ala-Dementors which are equally interesting as well. We get to see the mindset of people all too real in this world. And we also get this message in the book that makes you wonder why it’s so hard for people to accept other people’s differences.

This is a really good book and I thought a lot of people should give it a go. It’s all worth it!

About the Author
K.D. Worth has always considered herself to have the heart of a teenager with an old soul. When not talking to the characters living in her head, she loves to hang out at her favorite townie bar then go dancing and partying with her husband and friends. There is always music playing in her home, and if it’s too loud you’re too old! On the flip side, K.D. enjoys spending time in her vegetable garden, canning the food she grows, and making homemade jams and jellies. She also is known to crochet washcloths and blankets for her closest friends and smiles when they tease her for her “grandmotherly” ways. These two different sides to her personality create a layered tapestry of life experience that brings depth and believability to the characters she writes. She loves to hear from her fans almost as much as she loves her cocker spaniels. You can find her on Facebook or get updates about upcoming books on her website.

Book Review: Game Point (Dreamspun Desires #45) – M.J. O’Shea

Date of Publication: November 1st 2017 by Dreamspinner Press
Theme & Genres: LGBTQI, Romance, Contemporary, Age-Gap
Format: Ebook, 194 pages
ISBN: 9781635337563
Characters: Quinn Valenzuela, Porter Davis

Blurb:
Game, set… match made in heaven.

Spoiled socialite Quinn Valenzuela has no interest in sports or his family’s huge sporting goods empire, Sparta Athletics. So when Quinn learns his grandfather has died and he’s in control of the corporation, no one is more surprised than Quinn himself.

Dedicated COO Porter Davis has little time and less patience for brats like Quinn who have never done a day’s work, but circumstances leave him with little choice. Quinn claims he’s ready to leave partying behind and grow up, but it’ll take more than words to earn Porter’s respect. As it turns out, they can work—and play—together after all. A friends with benefits arrangement makes sense for the two busy men, but are they too different for it to ever develop into more? Not if Quinn can convince Porter he has his head in the game

This whole Dreamspun Desires Series is a hit or missed thing and this one definitely hit the target! I loved both MCs. I liked Quinn onset of the story with bits of his backstory being explained on why he became a party boy. Porter at first was a bit annoying but I guess he made up for his awful attitude midway through. I still want to learn more about him though. The few things we learned about him are his fuck-up social climbing parents, him being a previous Tennis player and his sister Perry and nothing else.

It felt a bit rushed and I wished the ending was a bit longer but overall, the story is sweet with hot sexy scenes and likable characters so that’s a win for the author!

‘Will definitely recommend this one!

Book Review: Gummy Bears & Grenades (THIRDS, #9.5) – Charlie Cochet

Published October 4, 2017
Format: Novella
Genre And Theme: LGBTQ, Romance, Shifters, Comedy, Sci-Fi
Length: 102 pages, ebook
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Ebook ISBN/ASIN: 9781635339963
Characters: Dexter J. Daley, Sloane Broadie

THIRDS agent Dexter J. Daley can’t wait to marry his fiancé, Team Leader Sloane Brodie, but first he’s looking forward to celebrating his bachelor party—which he intends to be a shenanigans-free evening of getting his groove on with family and friends. Of course events don’t work out as planned, but for Dex that’s nothing new. One thing is for sure, dodging drug dealers and hired thugs amid booze, dancing—and even a bear costume—will guarantee it’s a night Dex will never forget. Now he just needs to survive all the fun. *** Enjoy this bonus story from the THIRDS universe. These events occur between Darkest Hour Before Dawn and Tried & True in the series timeline. While reading this story would enhance your experience of the THIRDS series, it is not necessary to read before Tried & True.

Oh! This is absolutely adorable in every level and a bit sinister for some reason. If you’re a fan of the series, you may already know that the THIRDS series is one novel away from its final installment so this bonus story before the last book is a very much needed read pre-TIN series!

It’s Dex’s bachelor party and you know that if Dex is involved, a slew of troubles follows him!

This is very short but like what I’ve mentioned, very adorable, sweet and just a whole lot of feels because not only Sloane and Dex are bonded by their DNA, but also how in sync they are with each other’s feelings. I just hope that they get to marry first before the start of the TIN series! I cannot wait to read the last installment of this beloved series and this little novella just made me all the more excited!

Book Review: Darkest Hour Before Dawn (THIRDS, #9) – Charlie Cochet

Published April 25, 2017
Format: Novel
Genre And Theme: LGBTQ, Romance, Shifters, Comedy, Sci-Fi
Length: 224 pages, ebook
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Ebook ISBN/ASIN: B06VVGRHCX
Characters: Sebastian Hobbs, Hudson Colbourn

THIRDS Team Leader Sebastian Hobbs and Chief Medical Examiner Hudson Colbourn are as much in love now as they were nearly seven years ago when a tragic event on the job destroyed their relationship. The two drift together only to be pulled apart time and time again. When Hudson draws the interest of dangerous enemies, both within and outside the organization, Seb wants nothing more than to protect the man who still means everything to him.

As life and death events, an uncertain future, and startling truths draw Hudson and Seb to each other yet again, they must make a choice: trust their love and take strength from what they share, or lose what matters most for good this time.

This is another of my backlogged reviews from the THIRDS series so here is it.

I am very surprised with this one. I wasn’t a big fan of the Hobbs siblings except for Ethan from the very start so I didn’t really expect to enjoy this one as much as I did. I thought Seb was an a-grade a-hole for doing what he did to Hudson but I guess, time really heals all wounds, including a wounded heart.

I loved that we get to see more of Seb’s vulnarability here and why he decided to stay away from Hudson and why Rafe is such an ass to Hudson. Seriously though, I’m still not a fan of the guy. I’m talking about Rafe.

Going back to Hudson and Seb. I loved that there were no unnecessary dramas to their story. It was very straight to the point and who would’ve thought that they will finally do it? I mean, THAT totally surprised me!

And the big reveal at the end was oh-so-satisfying although I’ve already guessed it from the start, it was still very clever!

This is once again, a very enjoyable THIRDS installment!

Book Review: The Impetuous Afflictions of Jonathan Wolfe (The Auspicious Troubles of Love #2) – Charlie Cochet

Published November 8th 2013
Format: Novel
Genre And Theme: LGBT, Historical Romance
Length: 204 pages, ebook
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Ebook ISBN: 9781627982979
Characters: Henry Young. Jonathan “Johnnie” Wolfe

Blurb: Eight years after leaving the deserts of Africa and the French Foreign Legion behind, Jonathan Wolfe has settled into life at Hawthorne Manor in the English countryside. Johnnie helps his adopted family run the manor and provide a safe, loving home for a new generation of “brats”: boys mistreated and discarded for their homosexuality—something all too familiar to Johnnie. Although no longer an unruly youngster, Johnnie is as stubborn, foul-mouthed, and troublesome as ever. His recent rash behavior becomes a concern for those closest to him, especially Dr. Henry Young, the only man ever to capture Johnnie’s heart. Instead of soothing him, their closeness brings Johnnie’s insecurities from an unsettling past to the surface, and leads to an explosive situation that threatens to tear them apart. Then Henry’s past catches up to them….

This review is going to be real quick. First let me tell you the one thing I didn’t like about this story – it’s the hot tempered Johnnie who’s now several years older but still none the wiser. His constant misdemeanor towards Henry and the rest of the people in the manor just rubs me up the wrong way especially when they keep on forgiving him without actually letting him learn a lesson or two. I understand that what he’s been through during his youth was traumatic, I get that he’s insecure and all but didn’t all the boys in the manor went through the same thing one way or another? I don’t know, it’s just so annoying. Aside from this, the book is still semi-gold for me.

I loved that we see Chance and Jacky again with Bobby and Alexander and the “brats.” I just absolutely adore the scenes with them especially with little Elliot. What a sweetheart! They’re the one thing that got me going with the story. Truth be told, I wasn’t even paying attention to Henry and Johnnie’s love story. It was almost secondary. It’s as if the story revolves around the household of Chance and Jacky. It’s a beautiful story nonetheless so if you’ve read the first book, make sure to read this follow up!

Book Review: The Auspicious Troubles of Chance (The Auspicious Troubles of Love Book 1) – Charlie Cochet

Published June 20, 2012
Format: Novel
Genre And Theme: LGBT, Historical Romance
Length: 172 pages, ebook
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Ebook ISBN: 9781613725573
Characters: Chance Irving, Jacky Valentine

I’ve had this title for the longest time now and I’m not sure why I ‘ve totally forgotten about it since I bought it (along with Charlie’s previous works) after reading the author’s mega hit series, THIRDS. But while waiting for the last book of the THIRDS series, I decided to read Charlie’s back catalogue and here I am telling you about this beautiful story – pre-THIRDS success of the author.

Blurb: Chance Irving is a young man with a gift for getting into trouble-not surprising, as trouble is all he’s ever known. After losing everything he held dear one fateful night, he decides to leave New York and his past behind, and joins the French Foreign Legion. But even in Algiers, Chance can’t seem to shake his old ways, and he ends up being transferred to a unit made up of misfits and rabble-rousers like him-a unit he finds just in time to be captured and thrown into a cell with his new commandant, Jacky Valentine. A highly respected commandant with a soft spot for hard luck cases, Jacky is the kind of guy who would go to war for you, and the three equally troubled youths from his unit he’s more or less adopted feel the same way about him. Suddenly Chance starts to think that his life doesn’t have to be as desolate and barren as the wastelands around him. But even after their escape, with the promise of a future with Jacky to buoy his spirits, or maybe because of it, Chance can’t stop making mistakes. He disobeys orders, lashes out at the boys in Jacky’s care, and blazes a trail of self-destruction across the desert-until someone makes him realize he’s hurting more than just himself.

A Timeless Dreams title: While reaction to same-sex relationships throughout time and across cultures has not always been positive, these stories celebrate M/M love in a manner that may address, minimize, or ignore historical stigma

I just have to say that I absolutely adore Chauncey Irving aka Chance. He’s a fascinating character that you’d root for onset of the story. I loved his sass, his vulnerability, and his overall personality. He’s just so endearing as a child and as a trouble magnet adult. For fans of Dexter Daley – it is very easy to conclude that Charlie does have a prototype when it comes to his main characters. Chance is basically Dex’s twin brother from another era.

Then we have Jacky – good ol’ Jacky who have a soft spot for the cases like Jacky and his gangly unit of three troubled youths whom I equally adore like Jacky and Chance.

The story is fast-paced and very affecting at times. The blossoming relationship of Jacky and Chance is what the millenials are now calling #relationshipgoals  which made me swoon and tear up a bit!

I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a feel good read about second chances in life and love.

Book Review: Love in Retrograde – Charlie Cochet

Published May 11, 2016
Format: Novella
Genre And Theme: LGBT, Science Fiction
Length: 73 pages, ebook
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Ebook SBN13: 9781634772150
Characters: Kelly Sutton, Mars

Blurb: Enthusiastic, play-it-safe Kelly Sutton is an American intern at the Photonic Royal Society in New London. He’s been working on Project Mars for over a year, a mission kept so secret by the Society even Kelly doesn’t know exactly what it is. What Kelly does know is his contribution to the task will benefit mankind, and that’s enough for him.

Kelly’s world turns upside down when concerns over his mentor’s behavior lead Kelly to investigate and stumble upon a wicked truth. What is supposed to be a project to advance human life turns out to be an endeavor capable of mass destruction. The terrifying reality forces Kelly to choose between looking the other way to keep his job, as he’s always done, or risking his career and even his life to do the right thing by saving the man who’s captured his heart.

***

I’ve been reading some titles from Charlie’s back catalogue and I realized that I haven’t posted here about this lovely novella. I actually gave this a five star ratings on Goodreads and here’s the short review I’ve posted on said site:

Mars and Kelly are just the cutest ever! This is definitely a classic Charlie Cochet style! I loved the super adorable characterization. The usual Dex/Sloane characters formula is everything! I loved Mars and how he ‘fell in love’ with Kelly even before meeting him. What a precious AI-hunk! The whole story was quick but it doesn’t feel rushed. Now, I really want to read the story of Lucius and Jordan so I hope Charlie’s planning to write one.

Book Review: Love is Heartless (Love Can’t Series, #2) – Kim Fielding

Date of Publication: January 13, 2016
Genre and Themes: LGBTQ, Child Abuse, Romance, Mystery, Murder
Format: 254 pages, ebook
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
ISBN: 9781635332148
Cover Artist: Brooke Albrecht
Characters: Nevin Ng, Colin Westwood

BLURB:
Small but mighty—that could be Detective Nevin Ng’s motto. Now a dedicated member of the Portland Police Bureau, he didn’t let a tough start in life stop him from protecting those in need. He doesn’t take crap from anyone, and he doesn’t do relationships. Until he responds to the severe beating of a senior citizen and meets the victim’s bow-tied, wealthy landlord.

Property manager and developer Colin Westwood grew up with all the things Nevin never had, like plenty of money and a supportive, loving family. Too supportive, perhaps, since his childhood illness has left his parents unwilling to admit he’s a strong, grown man. Colin does do relationships, but they never work out. Now he’s thinking maybe he won’t just go with the flow. Maybe it’s time to try something more exciting. But being a witness to a terrible crime—or two—was more than he bargained for.

Despite their differences, Colin and Nevin discover that sparks fly when they’re together. But sparks are short-lived, dampened by the advent of brutal crimes, and Colin and Nevin have seemingly little in common. The question is whether they have the heart to build something lasting.

The story overlaps with the first book, Love Can’t Conquer  and has an alternating point of views between Nevin and Collin but it can be read as standalone.

Let’s talk about Nevin. I’m not that much of a fan of his character at first. He’s a typical fuckboy and I don’t like that side of him. I get that he’s commitment-phobic and all that but during the first few chapters, he’s like itching for sex every single page. I’m like, seriously, is he always horny? I mean, I get that he’s lonely, I get that he’s stressed but it’s kind of off-putting. That’s just me though.

You have to understand that his childhood didn’t give him much to be happy about. I eventually started to like him at the latter part of the story so all’s good. He actually kind of reminded me of Ash from the THIRDS series by Charlie Cochet.

Then there’s sweet, sweet Colin. He came from a rich and very accepting family and has a super adorable cat named Legolas. On the exterior and perhaps financially, he is the total opposite of Nevin but both men have good hearts.

The story isn’t as intense and as angsty as the first book but it does have its moments especially when they finally realized they are meant for each other. Guessing the culprit in the serial killing of old people in the story was a bit predictable but the execution was good because the story didn’t really center on it. It was mostly about the day to day lives of our main characters. The banter between them was real good and the side characters including Colin’s parents are a real joy to read.

This is another wonderful story from Kim Fielding. It’s a shame we didn’t hear much from Parker (Rhoda’s son) this time because if I were to based it in the first book of the series, I kind of thought that we’d get his story next. Maybe he’s up next!
