Book Review: The Prince and His Bedeviled Bodyguard (Paranormal Princes #1) by Charlie Cochet

This was a cute little read. There’s this cute world building, almost like a cutesy version of Once Upon A Time but where there is a fairy tale world and the real life merging. Did I say cute? lol Okay, so it’s just over a hundred pages, with Owin, an ocelot shifter and his assigned bodyguard Grimm, a wolf-shifter exchanging banter all throughout the story.

At first, I was just annoyed with Owin’s acting like a little diva towards Grimm every now and then but I appreciate his growth over the course of his whole ‘quest’ – something that he needs to fulfill to show his worth as one of the crowned Princes of this Shifter World led by the naughty king of all shifters, Alarick.

What I loved most about the story is that it’s cute and quick. Initially Owin and Grimm’s banter felt a bit too much but since everything feels like happening simultaneously, there’s no room to overthink it. It isn’t as memorable as the other stories and characters from the author but I guess, not everything is on THIRDS level.

I do love the epilogue though. It was sweet and funny. I’d still recommend this one for some light and fun reading and I’d most likely be reading the next story in the series.

I’ve read this upon its release last month and have only gotten to writing a review as we speak! Sorry, Charlie – I’ve been so busy!

Y’all know I’m the biggest fan of Dex and Sloane and this final installment of the THIRDS series is a bit nostalgic in a way because one of my favorite couples will be embarking on a new chapter and new series for that matter which I believe is slated in 2019 (OMG! So long!)

Anyway, before I get sidetrack (I’m definitely writing freestyle right now so bear with what I am about to post in a bit and what you’re about to read haha!) – Okay, as much as I loved Charlie and the guys – I’ve to say that this isn’t my favorite book in the series. Don’t get me wrong, I still loved it but I was maybe hoping for lesser drama! But what can I do? It’s the finale so it was expected. I was just dead worried the whole time that the wedding will not be happening at all. I swear, I was ready to stalk Charlie on social media. LOL

The thing that bothers me a bit here is the disconnect I felt with most of the characters here. It’s like, we’re all just waiting for the big day to happen but lo and behold – drama unfolds! Ugh! Sometimes, I just want them to mellow for a bit!

Okay, perhaps I’m getting a bit carried away now since it’s 2:40 in the morning from where I am. It was still an awesome read overall. I’d recommend it to fans of the series for now because it’s definitely not stand alone!

Book Review: Gummy Bears & Grenades (THIRDS, #9.5) – Charlie Cochet

Published October 4, 2017
Format: Novella
Genre And Theme: LGBTQ, Romance, Shifters, Comedy, Sci-Fi
Length: 102 pages, ebook
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Ebook ISBN/ASIN: 9781635339963
Characters: Dexter J. Daley, Sloane Broadie

THIRDS agent Dexter J. Daley can’t wait to marry his fiancé, Team Leader Sloane Brodie, but first he’s looking forward to celebrating his bachelor party—which he intends to be a shenanigans-free evening of getting his groove on with family and friends. Of course events don’t work out as planned, but for Dex that’s nothing new. One thing is for sure, dodging drug dealers and hired thugs amid booze, dancing—and even a bear costume—will guarantee it’s a night Dex will never forget. Now he just needs to survive all the fun. *** Enjoy this bonus story from the THIRDS universe. These events occur between Darkest Hour Before Dawn and Tried & True in the series timeline. While reading this story would enhance your experience of the THIRDS series, it is not necessary to read before Tried & True.

Oh! This is absolutely adorable in every level and a bit sinister for some reason. If you’re a fan of the series, you may already know that the THIRDS series is one novel away from its final installment so this bonus story before the last book is a very much needed read pre-TIN series!

It’s Dex’s bachelor party and you know that if Dex is involved, a slew of troubles follows him!

This is very short but like what I’ve mentioned, very adorable, sweet and just a whole lot of feels because not only Sloane and Dex are bonded by their DNA, but also how in sync they are with each other’s feelings. I just hope that they get to marry first before the start of the TIN series! I cannot wait to read the last installment of this beloved series and this little novella just made me all the more excited!

Book Review: Darkest Hour Before Dawn (THIRDS, #9) – Charlie Cochet

Published April 25, 2017
Format: Novel
Genre And Theme: LGBTQ, Romance, Shifters, Comedy, Sci-Fi
Length: 224 pages, ebook
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Ebook ISBN/ASIN: B06VVGRHCX
Characters: Sebastian Hobbs, Hudson Colbourn

THIRDS Team Leader Sebastian Hobbs and Chief Medical Examiner Hudson Colbourn are as much in love now as they were nearly seven years ago when a tragic event on the job destroyed their relationship. The two drift together only to be pulled apart time and time again. When Hudson draws the interest of dangerous enemies, both within and outside the organization, Seb wants nothing more than to protect the man who still means everything to him.

As life and death events, an uncertain future, and startling truths draw Hudson and Seb to each other yet again, they must make a choice: trust their love and take strength from what they share, or lose what matters most for good this time.

This is another of my backlogged reviews from the THIRDS series so here is it.

I am very surprised with this one. I wasn’t a big fan of the Hobbs siblings except for Ethan from the very start so I didn’t really expect to enjoy this one as much as I did. I thought Seb was an a-grade a-hole for doing what he did to Hudson but I guess, time really heals all wounds, including a wounded heart.

I loved that we get to see more of Seb’s vulnarability here and why he decided to stay away from Hudson and why Rafe is such an ass to Hudson. Seriously though, I’m still not a fan of the guy. I’m talking about Rafe.

Going back to Hudson and Seb. I loved that there were no unnecessary dramas to their story. It was very straight to the point and who would’ve thought that they will finally do it? I mean, THAT totally surprised me!

And the big reveal at the end was oh-so-satisfying although I’ve already guessed it from the start, it was still very clever!

This is once again, a very enjoyable THIRDS installment!

Book Review: Thick & Thin (THIRDS ,#8) – Charlie Cochet

Published February 1, 2017
Format: Novel
Genre And Theme: LGBTQ, Romance, Shifters, Comedy, Sci-Fi
Length: 95 pages, ebook
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Ebook ISBN: 9781635333893
Characters: Dexter J. Daley, Sloane Broady

This is one of my backlogged reviews, err, I keep on meaning to write one but keeps on forgetting it. This one is going to be quick though.

This is a rather sweet and emotional follow up after the events in Smoke & Mirrors. Dex is now engaged with Sloane, he died and was resurrected as half Therian and they know that sooner or later, they would have to come clean with their team.

I loved how Charlie drag their “coming out” to the team like this because it means that we get to see more of Dex and Sloane and the Destructive Delta team.

Here, you get to see how tight they are as a team – as a family. That scene with Ash was a bit uncomfortable but perhaps, if I were him, I’d feel the same way about my best friend.

There are pivotal moments involving the team and what they are about to embark on in the future but mainly, it is more about their acceptance to the changes not only with Dex but the dynamics of their group.

A really good read for the fans of the series! I totally approved!

Book Review: The Auspicious Troubles of Chance (The Auspicious Troubles of Love Book 1) – Charlie Cochet

Published June 20, 2012
Format: Novel
Genre And Theme: LGBT, Historical Romance
Length: 172 pages, ebook
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Ebook ISBN: 9781613725573
Characters: Chance Irving, Jacky Valentine

I’ve had this title for the longest time now and I’m not sure why I ‘ve totally forgotten about it since I bought it (along with Charlie’s previous works) after reading the author’s mega hit series, THIRDS. But while waiting for the last book of the THIRDS series, I decided to read Charlie’s back catalogue and here I am telling you about this beautiful story – pre-THIRDS success of the author.

Blurb: Chance Irving is a young man with a gift for getting into trouble-not surprising, as trouble is all he’s ever known. After losing everything he held dear one fateful night, he decides to leave New York and his past behind, and joins the French Foreign Legion. But even in Algiers, Chance can’t seem to shake his old ways, and he ends up being transferred to a unit made up of misfits and rabble-rousers like him-a unit he finds just in time to be captured and thrown into a cell with his new commandant, Jacky Valentine. A highly respected commandant with a soft spot for hard luck cases, Jacky is the kind of guy who would go to war for you, and the three equally troubled youths from his unit he’s more or less adopted feel the same way about him. Suddenly Chance starts to think that his life doesn’t have to be as desolate and barren as the wastelands around him. But even after their escape, with the promise of a future with Jacky to buoy his spirits, or maybe because of it, Chance can’t stop making mistakes. He disobeys orders, lashes out at the boys in Jacky’s care, and blazes a trail of self-destruction across the desert-until someone makes him realize he’s hurting more than just himself.

A Timeless Dreams title: While reaction to same-sex relationships throughout time and across cultures has not always been positive, these stories celebrate M/M love in a manner that may address, minimize, or ignore historical stigma

I just have to say that I absolutely adore Chauncey Irving aka Chance. He’s a fascinating character that you’d root for onset of the story. I loved his sass, his vulnerability, and his overall personality. He’s just so endearing as a child and as a trouble magnet adult. For fans of Dexter Daley – it is very easy to conclude that Charlie does have a prototype when it comes to his main characters. Chance is basically Dex’s twin brother from another era.

Then we have Jacky – good ol’ Jacky who have a soft spot for the cases like Jacky and his gangly unit of three troubled youths whom I equally adore like Jacky and Chance.

The story is fast-paced and very affecting at times. The blossoming relationship of Jacky and Chance is what the millenials are now calling #relationshipgoals  which made me swoon and tear up a bit!

I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a feel good read about second chances in life and love.

Book Review: Smoke & Mirrors (THIRDS, #7) – Charlie Cochet

Smoke & MirrorsDate of Publication: July 8, 2016
Genre and Themes: LGBTQ, Romance, Shifters, Comedy, Sci-Fi
Format: 230 pages, ebook
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
ISBN: 9781634773881
Cover Artist: L.C. Chase
Characters: Dexter J. Daley, Sloane Brodie

I’ve been spoiled by Charlie since the first book of this series and every release in between that is not part of the THIRDS universe so with this one being a Dex-Sloane book, I’ve terribly high expectations and this book more than surpassed them. This seventh installment just made me more excited than before on the next book of the series and especially for the ‘upcoming’ solo series of Dex and Sloane. I am in heaven with this news because I just soooo loved them!

So on with the book – it started from where the last book ended with Dex getting ‘kidnaped’ leaving Sloane dumbfounded because seriously, how the hell did that happen? Hhmm… yes, apparently it could happen even to the mighty Sloane. A certain Mr. Wolf was the culprit for Dex’s abduction and what happened just made me weep internally for my baby Dex. Sorry folks, ‘won’t spoil it for you but you will be absolutely livid for Dex’s sake. I don’t care how good looking Mr. Wolf is – I seriously do not like him. Period.

Right after that, Dex has been acting strange. See, strange things has been happening with him already from the last book so there are already clues there and I think I’ve already gathered what is about to happen here so I’m a bit ready and excited for it to finally happen. Again, no spoilers!

There’s this one scene though that I thought you should be ready for. Remember that if you love Dex, you should also love Sloane. As usual, this big bad Therian is being literally a big BAD Therian. He’s got an a-hole moment here and I was just so fucking disappointed at him. I was like – seriously, aren’t you guys way past this stage already? But yeah – stupid Sloane is stupid. Sorry, I love the guys but he’s an idiot. Sorry – Charlie – I just need to let it out.

Don’t worry tho, because he more than made up for it. It was just the sweetest thing ever and I hope that he’ll never do such a thing again. Although given that there will be a series exclusive for them, it’s unlikely that he’d stop becoming Mr. Running Man. *rolls eyes*

A lot of things are about to be reveal here which are very pivotal into the story arc of the THIRDS universe in general. It was very fascinating and very exciting at the same time.

But here’s the mini-spoiler I just need to air out to Charlie:

Please, have them do the THING in the first book of their series or atleast during the next installment of the THIRDS series!  Don’t wait for the 18th book for it to happen please…lol.

To end this, I just have to say that fans of the series won’t be disappointed with this new offering from Charlie Cochet. It was superbly written and something that I’d like to call a ‘classic Charlie.’

Book Review: Catch A Tiger By The Tail (THIRDS, #6) – Charlie Cochet

Catch A Tiger By The TailPublished February 5th 2016
Format: Novel
Genre And Theme: Gay,Romance / Sci-Fi / Fantasy
Length: 2016 pages, ebook
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Ebook ISBN: 9781634769099
Characters: Calvin Summers, Ethan Hobbs

I’m a massive fan of this series so it’s really fun to see the characters in it grow, following more of their adventures in each book. Now on it’s 6th installment, the focus is on Calvin and Ethan – both members of THIRDS’ Destructive Delta who’ve been best of friends since they were little and somewhere along the way developed something more than their friendship.

I have to tell you though that this isn’t stand-alone as it involves characters you’d get to meet once you start out with the first book in the series, Hell & High Water and so on…

I’ve got to say that I’ve enjoyed this better than the last book in the series. I find it more focused in terms of story development. It’s lovely to see how Calvin & Ethan are finally reaching a point in their friendship where they won’t have to hide (or be more open, I guess?) anymore. Prior to this, it’s a given that there’s nobody for them but each other. Here, we just see their inner dealings with their respective family, their feelings and their co-workers at THIRDS.

One thing that I find a bit incredulous was Ethan’s way of communicating with people. I mean, I get that he’s got this mutism and doesn’t really talk much (at all) save for a number of ‘em but I find it weird that the rest are able to decipher what he’s saying. It’s minor for me but it’s just brow-raising if I allow myself to really analyze it.

I also loved that we get some hints here on the future of the series especially about Dex and Sloane. I just loved their moments here along with Cael, Ash and the rest of the gang. At some point, the humor is almost slapstick but thinking back, it’s the way this series became so dear to me. It’s the humor first and foremost and the great world building and its characters.

This one is like a gift by the author to its loyal readers. It’s a prelude to what’s about to happen to THE main couple of this series – a development which I would want to stick for until the end of it.

Again, what a truly delightful offering from Charlie Cochet!

Book Review: Against The Grain (THIRDS, #5) – Charlie Cochet

Against The GrainI am a big fan of this series and have grown to love most of its characters. Charlie definitely knows her way with humor and great world building. Against The Grain is the fifth book in the THIRDS series focusing this time on Ash Keeler (Sloane’s BFF) and Cael Maddox (Dex’s brother) with them finally getting together.

I really did my best to get in the zone with this one but it’s not just for me. I ignored Ash’s asshatery towards Cale since he came around eventually but the story just didn’t click for me.

I feel that there’s just so many things happening around them and the the focus that was supposed to be on the couple was sidetracked by plot lines including Cael’s ex-boyfriend, his bonding / mating, the new drugs and all. Also, reading Austen’s POV was such a distraction, like I feel that the guy shouldn’t be in this book at all because he took some of the spotlight from the couple and the Therian Intelligence Network (TIN) just made the whole thing a hot mess. The out made for Sparks was just all too convenient – and…

I loved that we still have a lot of Dex-time here who totally saved this read for me. I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed the first four books but I will definitely continue to support the next books in the series.
