Binibining Pilipinas 2014: Review, Analysis and Random Thoughts

BBP Logo for Paddylast

Stage / Production: I thought the stage was quite elegant. I love that it did not overshadowed the contestants and the cylinder / tube props  looked really great live and on TV! A-

???????????????????????????????

Hosts: Upon learning that Xian Lim will be back to host the event, I was initially disappointed because I thought he did poorly during his 2012 stint. This time though, I was pleasantly surprised because he’s not one bit annoying. He brought with him enough charm to woo the live audience and this year, it went smoothly for him. Good job Xian!

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Anne Curtis was of course the darling of the crowd last night. She’s very charming and SO VERY, EXTEMELY BEAUTIFUL! She even belted  “Alone” off air while the judges were having their deliberation of the winners. The audience just totally loved her!

???????????????????????????????

On Venus, Shamcey and Janine: Venus is definitely now a pro in hosting. She did extremely well and looked every inch of a beauty queen! It’s a wonder why until now she’s still in competition form! Just amazing! Shamcey on the other hand was beautiful as ever but she sounded too scripted and too hurried. When Janine first appeared, there was a unanimous opinion in our row that she looked unkempt – it must be the hair though. Her second number though was rather alluring and she made it all up from her disastrous first styling. Overall, the three girls did really well.

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Opening Number: The opening number which includes the intro of hosts Xian and Anne and of course the introduction of the contestants reminds me so much of the 2011 Miss Universe pageant – it must be the color coding of their outfits.

The Swimsuit Competition: One word – BRAVO. Madam Stella really step up this time around (this I believe totally impressed Miss Universe president Paula Shugart and co.) The ladies are wearing expensive looking swimsuits inspired by the festivals in the country. I love that they were divided into four groups showcasing four different festivals from the Philippines.

The Evening Gown Competition: Oh I just love this part! This is where the eventual winners really stood out! My favorite gowns are from Parul Shah, Bianca Guidotti and MJ Lastimosa. The “White Gown” myth also got into us and made us a bit nervous. Oh, I also love that this segment was super fast!

Best in Swimsuit: I was so happy that finally, MJ was awarded this well deserved title. In 2011 and 2012, I thought she was robbed big time – now, “the body” of the competition was rewarded justly.

Best in Evening Gown: I really thought that this award was just a toss up between Bianca Guidotti and MJ Lastimosa. Bianca was awarded the title which I think was pretty fair.

The Announcement of Top 15: Pia, MJ, Bianca, Yvethe and Kris were already shoo in for the semis followed closely by Parul, Tiglao and Lehmann. The rest are surprises for me and it was with sadness that Diana Arevalo and Kim Suiza failed to make it into the semis – esp Suiza because she looks absolutely ravishing last night!

The Question and Answer portion:

Laura Lehman was asked for her favorite city that best represents her and she answered Armsterdam. I thought it was a cute answer but it could’ve been better if she chose something close from home. Ya’ll know what I mean right?

Pia Wurtzbach was very charming in answering her question but I’m firm in my belief that she would’ve made it had she answered the question in English (even though she was asked by Angara in the vernacular.)

Mary Jean Lastimosa – well, what can I say? Like her answer, the girl was very much composed upon answering her question. She gave it her all and the audience just loved it, even reigning Miss Universe Gabriela Isler who asked the question looks very impressed!

Bianca Guidotti‘s answer was very short and lacks conviction. After her turn, I immediately pegged her for a runner-up finish but clearly, her charm was undeniable in delivering her thoughts.

Nichole Manalo faltered and received an awkward applause from the audience.

Parul Shah was very studied and calculated which I think works well for her.

Yvethe Santiago was really mesmerizing on screen and in person. Her answer along with Lastimosa, Shah and Janson were the clear stand outs!

Kris Janson’s answer was very heartfelt that even host Anne Curtis teared up. I love her spontaneity. I guess what I didn’t like about her last night was her make up which made her looked tired.

Hannah Sison gave a decent answer but she was trying a bit too hard to be charming. Nevertheless, she look so polished last night.

On Emin: He’s quite a charmer and his songs aren’t that bad.???????????????????????????????

On regining Miss Universe Gabriela Isler: Oh, the crowd just loved her! She’s very pretty and tall! She’s for the record the third Miss Universe titleholder I’ve seen in my life after Gloria Diaz and Margie Moran. ???????????????????????????????

The Announcement Of Winners

2nd Runner-up: Hannah Sison – my friend who’s with me (Rey) and I predicted this and we believe that the judges got it right.

1st Runner-up: Laura Lehmann – I was a bit nervous because of some rumors floating in the net that Lehman was the matriarch Stella Araneta’s favorite to win the MUP crown. I’m glad that she didn’t win it because she needs more polishing. She look so pretty though!

Binibining Pilipinas Tourism: Parul Shah after her performance through the night deserved a crown and I was really hoping that she’ll get this one and she did!

Binibining Pilipinas Supranational: I predicted Yvethe Santiago to win this title and my intuition was right! Now, we’ve a pretty good chance of nailing a back to back win in Miss Supranational!

Binibining Pilipinas Intercontinental: As the first recipient of this title, Kris Janson made history last night after delivering a good performance and clinching this minor title. I was rather relieved when she was called because it means bigger chances for MJ to win the MUP title!

Binibining Pilipinas International: Initially, I was not happy Guidotti even won a crown. I was expecting Pia to clinch this but I’m just glad she did because I figured that she and Bea have some similarities. This could really work well for her. Plus, her personality’s too contagious! You gotta love a girl with a very positive personality!

>that shot when MJ was tearing up almost broke my heart. She must be thinking that she’d lose again since Pia Wurtzbach was still in contention. Lo and behold, her name was call the 2014 Miss Universe Philippines!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!MJ Lastimosa

When she was announced the new Miss Universe Philippines, I felt like crying and hyperventilating! I was shouting for joy at the top of my lungs! Finally, my girl did it and she was rewarded for all her hard work and determination! MJ finally harvested the fruits of her hard labor – it’s been a long and winding road for her but it’s all worth the wait!

Megan Young in Moscow for Miss Russia 2014!

Birthday girl and reigning Miss World Megan Young is currently enjoying her time in Russia as she is about to crown the new Miss Russia on March 1, Saturday during the pageant’s coronation night. Megan will be joined by reigning Miss Universe Gabriela Isler from Venezuela. Since 2007, the winner of Miss Russia represents her country in both Miss Universe and Miss World.

Falcon native Alyz Henrich was crowned the new Miss Earth at the Versailles Palace in the Philippines last December 7. Henrich was touted to be the one to beat from the onset of the competition while Katia Wagner of Austria, Punika  Kulsoontornrut, Catharina Choi of Korea were hailed as her elemental queens (Air, Water and Fire repectively.)

Meanwhile, local bet Angelee delos Reyes may have been deprived of a crown but she fought gracefully and I really thought that she’s the biggest threat to Alyz. She was amazing nonetheless and making it into the top 8 is a great feat already with over 88 girls competing.

The win of Venezuela signify a double victory for the pageant powerhouse as Gabriela Isler also won the Miss Universe title this year.

Miss Venezuela Gabriela Isler is the winner of Miss Universe 2013!

Miss Universe 2013 VenezuelaJust three years after the historic win of Stefania Fernandez crowned then by her fellow Venezuelan Dayana Mendoza, the pageant powerhouse yet again proved that they are the leading country when it comes to sending top notch delegates with Gabriela Isler clinching the 7th Miss Universe crown for Venezuela!

Spain’s Patricia Yurena Rodriguez was adjudged 2nd while Constanza Baez of Ecuador was 3rd over all. Philippines’ bet Ariella Arida was 4th with Brazil’s Jakelyne Oliveira completing the Top 5!

For me, tonight’s a reminiscent of Shamcey’s stint in Brazil where she placed 4th behind Brazil, Ukraine and the eventual winner Angola. Everyone but Shamcey used an interpreter. It was still a good run though since Ara was able to continue PH’s top 5 streak!

My Top 16 Predictions For Miss Universe 2013

Miss Universe 2013 - Philippines

Heya guys! I just want to show you my predictions on how the Top 16 will look like on Saturday night at the Crocus City Hall during the culmination of the 2013 Miss Universe pageant. Don’t get me wrong though, I’ve already presented my Top 15 (based on their preliminary performances) but factoring everything, things would definitely change a bit in my opinion. So here is my prediction for the magic 15 plus the people’s choice!

MU2013

4th Runner-up:Spain – Patricia Yurena Rodriguez

TOP 10

13. Poland – Paulina Krupinska
14. Turkey – Berrin Keklikler
15. USA – Erin Brady

(I’d like to think that either PR, PHILIPPINES or VENEZUELA will be getting the People’s Choice votes so an additional Trump Pick will come into play with debuting nation Azerbaijan as its receiver)

My Miss Universe 2013 Top 15 Picks After The Preliminary Competition

Most of the ladies who made my final hot picks based solely on their performance on the Evening Gown and the Swimsuit competition are already touted to make the cut. There’s a couple of surprises and sadly, some few mishaps from some favorites. Here are my top 15 girls who impresses me the most during the preliminary that was held last Tuesday.

Miss Ukraine Olga Strorozhenko is back on top!

Miss Ukraine Olga Strorozhenko is back on top!

Average: 94.42%

Ukraine came on stage like she owned it! She was perfect in both presentation and she knows how to work the stage. I won’t mind her winning it all because her beauty is just beyond. The crucial Q&A would only be her pitfall once she entered the Top 5 which is inevitable. Her beauty and demeanor reminds me of Rozanna Purcell (Miss Ireland, 2010) but her’s the sweeter version.

Russia - Elmira Abdrazakov

Russia – Elmira Abdrazakov

Average: 94.38%

Despite her homecourt advantage, I’m glad that Elmira didn’t just stand there doing nothing. This girl wanted to make her country proud and you can just feel it. She’s confident, young and vibrant. I won’t complain if she end up winning the Diamond Nexus crown on Saturday.

Israel - Titi Yitayish Ayanaw

Israel – Titi Yitayish Ayanaw

Average: 94.25%

She’s obviously the strongest black delegate this year and she’s working all the press she’s gotten during the preliminary. It just worries me that she’s almost channeling Leila Lopes in both segment, this could either break her or make her win the judges’ hearts. Regardless, she’s a shoo-in for the semis.

Brazil - Jakelyne Oliveira

Brazil – Jakelyne Oliveira

Average: 94.17%

Jakelyne is Bodine Koehler in every level during the prelims. Her stance, her girth, her body and just the way she carries herself. She’s almost too perfect. She’s got a high score from me but I’m worried. I hope my instinct’s wrong. This girl’s amazing!

Philippines - Ariella Arida

Philippines – Ariella Arida

Average: 93.99%

I’ve nothing but praises for our girl Ara. Miss Philippines delivered what was expected from her! The twirl during the Swimsuit segment was an O-M-G moment and she exudes such elegance wearing that yellow evening gown. Our girl’s a shoo-in for the semis that I could tell you!

 Poland – Paulina Krupinska

Poland – Paulina Krupinska

Average: 93.94%

Poland already made a statement as one of the frontrunners all throughout the competition and last Tuesday sealed her semifinal placement with that ever-so endearing and captivating beauty. A back to back for Poland!

 Spain – Patricia Yurena Rodriguez

Spain – Patricia Yurena Rodriguez

Average: 93.64%

You can tell that Spain has been waiting for this moment and you can also see how polished she has become over the years after her Top 15 Semifinals stint in Miss World 2008. I find her too polished to begin with but she sure is ready to conquer the Universe this time.

Puerto Rico - Monic Perez

Puerto Rico – Monic Perez

Average: 93.13%

Monic has been one of my favorite girls even before she arrived in Moscow. She came prepared and I guess I was expecting too much from her and was slightly disappointed during the swimsuit segment. Nevertheless, she bounced back with her evening gown presentation and my faith in her was restored. Go Monic!

Nicaragua - Nastassja Bolivar

Nicaragua – Nastassja Bolivar

Average: 92.99%

Prior to the preliminary competition, Nicaragua was nowhere near my Top 30 but when she strutted with that gold evening gown number and flaunted her amazing catwalk during the swimsuit round – boy, was I dumbfounded! Nicaragua’s the biggest revelation for me! It’ll be a sin not to include her in the semis. Ooh, she also won the award for having the best national costume!

Czech Republic – Gabriela Kratochvilova

Czech Republic – Gabriela Kratochvilova

Average: 92.76%

Gabriela stood out because of her black short hairdo. This girl radiates beauty and positivity. You can’t deny her a semis spot!

Venezuela - Gabriela Isler

Venezuela – Gabriela Isler

Average: 92.69%

Another Gabriela, this time created by THE Osmel Sousa. She’s a Miss Venezuela and as expected – she delivered!

Dominican Republic – Yaritza Reyes

Dominican Republic – Yaritza Reyes

Average: 92.55%

Yaritza’s too polished not to be notice but I’m worried because she’s SO Ruth Ocumarez. Not because she’s got dark skin but because she’s like Ruth. Almost too perfect! Yes, I’m giving her the Ruth Ocumárez Award. 😦 (she’s still on my Top 15 though)

Croatia – Melita Fabecic

Croatia – Melita Fabecic

Average: 92.49%

If she wanted to be notice, Melita needs to step it up on Saturday once called in the semis. She needs to have spark! Mere beauty would only get her that far. I’m rooting for ya girl!

Turkey – Berrin Keklikler

Turkey – Berrin Keklikler

Average: 92.49%

Berrin could be the dark horse of this competition. She’s sweet, young and fresh!

USA - Erin Brady

USA – Erin Brady

Average: 92.45%

I was a bit disappointed by her presentation in both segment. I thought it was weak and she was barely there. I still gave her a relatively high score enough to make my Top 15 cause I know that Erin’s better than what she have shown during the prelims! C’mon now, you were my Top pick last week! Bring it girl!

Who are your top 15 guys?

My Miss Universe 2013 Top 15 4th Hot Picks

Erin Brady clinching the top spot is not a real shocker because she could really win this!

Erin Brady clinching the top spot is not a real shocker because she could really win this!

She’s a hot favorite to win the Miss Universe crown ever since she won the Miss USA pageant and I can see why. She’s got the facial beauty of Olivia Culpo, the sensuous glare of Dayana Mendoza, the elegance of Leila Lopes and the x factor of Ximena Navarette. I don’t really mind her winning a back to back for the US cuz’ she’s so worth it!

Russia's Elmira Abdrazakova and Ariella Arida of the Philippines

Russia’s Elmira Abdrazakova and Ariella Arida of the Philippines

Hometown girl Elmira is too hard to ignore. Her multiracial beauty is simply captivating and with her home turf advantage, she could very well be on her way to the crown if she can pull enough steam until the finale.

Meanwhile, my girl Ariella Arida stepped it up big time and I cannot believe that over a period of just one week – she was able to deliver the goods for an impending top 5 finish and if she’s lucky, maybe the third crown for the Philippines! You go girl!

4. Ukraine - Olga Strorozhenko 5. Poland - Paulina Krupinska 6. Puerto Rico - Monic Perez
