Binibining Pilipinas Specials 2018: Final Hot Picks & Predictions

In three days’ time, the winners of Binibining Pilipinas 2018 will be announced in a grand coronation at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Six girls will be crowned and will represent the country in these pageants: Miss Universe, Miss International, Miss Supranational, Miss Grand International, Miss Intercontinental, and Miss Globe.

With that being said, let me present to you my final pick for these titles, along with the girls whom I think will most likely spoil it for each title.

Binibining Pilipinas – Globe
The Miss Globe organization is a generous organization that has already gifted us two winners: Maricar Balagtas in 2001 (before the conflicts between the owners and when it was still an Istanbul-based pageant) and, most recently, Ann Colis (2015, now simply Miss Globe, based in Canada). Nelda Ibe almost got the title last year, and it’s easy to say that the organization is basically looking for a polished contestant to represent their brand. With that being said, I would pick Vickie Rushton as the best delegate to represent the Philippines. With her sultry look and very interesting background, she could easily seal the deal for our third win.

Most Likely to Upset: Ma. Andrea Abesamis. Aya’s polarizing appeal may do wonders overseas, and she could clinch the third Miss Globe title for the country just as easily.

Binibining Pilipinas – Grand International

This budding Thai-owned pageant has been a tough nut to crack for the Philippines. The country has been sending top-notch delegates such as Parul Shah, Nicole Cordoves, and Elizabeth Clenci from last year, who finished 3rd overall. With ‘promotion of peace and love’ as the pageant’s motto, I could easily envision Dr. Ena Velasco using her profession to easily see her way through the top and win the country’s first Miss Grand International title. Blessed with a pleasant mix of Pacific and Oriental beauty, Ena is the perfect girl to win this title.

Most Likely to Upset: Karen Gallman’s beauty is definitely Nawat’s type of beauty. She’s like a petite Latina beauty contestant, and we all know how much Nawat loves her Latinas. Karen is a solid candidate, but her height pretty much derails her chances of clinching the top two crowns.

Binibining Pilipinas – Intercontinental

Like in Miss Grand International, the country hasn’t won its first crown from this pageant. Pageant fans and pundits were in shock earlier this year when favorite Katarina Rodriguez failed to snag the crown, but since it’s all done and over with, it seems like the best contestant to send here is the polarizing beauty of Ma. Andrea Verdadero Abesamis. I initially pegged her as the ultimate spoiler for the Miss Universe Philippines crown, but as we approach the finale, it looks like Aya will be best suited for this pageant for its unpredictability.

Most Likely to Upset: Michele Gumabao may also be a good fit for this pageant. She’s a great talker and has an amazing personality that nobody can resist.

Binibining Pilipinas – Supranational

If there is one contestant who could charm this Europe-based pageant, Michele Gumabao, with her statuesque frame and fun personality, may just be the girl for it. Since the win of Korea’s Jenny Kim last year, it’s now kind of difficult to say if her win was just a bleep from their usual type of winners, but knowing Michele could easily adjust the way she did from being a professional athlete into becoming a beauty pageant contestant, she could easily make her presence known and perhaps get our second win from this pageant.

Most Likely to Upset: I’ve got to settle for Ahtisa right here as the second-best for this title. If she’s unable to clinch the international sash, she could easily be our Miss Supranational representative, where her beauty will surely be appreciated first and foremost.

Binibining Pilipinas – International

This is actually a tricky one for me because I’ve consistently pitted two girls for this title since the very beginning. I thought it’d be a two-way battle between Vickie Rushton and Ahtisa Manalo, but lo and behold, Sigrid Grace Flores came out of nowhere, leading up to the final stretch of the competition. Her contagious smile and glowing aura during the Parade of Beauties and her communication skills that were briefly showcased during The Road to the Crown were enough to render Vickie and Ahtisa’s arsenal weak enough to clinch the second-highest title in the competition.

Most Likely to Upset: Angelie Asuncion. She’s one of the few girls who stood out for me in the televised Road to the Crown primer. What a revelation! She reminds me so much of her camp sister, Janicel Lubina. If Sigrid doesn’t make it past Ahtisa and Vickie, I’ve no problem with Angelie nabbing this title.

Miss Universe Philippines

This has been Catriona’s title to lose since the very beginning. Catriona went to the screening battle-ready, and up to this point, she’s the girl that’s been tagged as the one to beat and the girl with the complete package. Barring any “political” moves against her, the probability of her getting the top plum is almost 100%.

Her gift of gab, facial beauty, elegant aura, towering height, and international experience are what made her my ultimate Miss Universe Philippines.

Most Likely to Upset: Another fan favorite, Michele Gumabao, may provide a hurdle to Catriona’s path to the MUP crown, but I honestly don’t see her usurping Cat for the top title of the night.

I recall reading a comment from somewhere that actually encapsulated my thoughts about the Bb.Pilipinas Organization choosing the new Miss Universe Philippines. If they are gunning for the fourth Miss Universe crown, they should crown Catriona. If they’re after the continuous semis streak, choose Michele or Ena. If we want to rest for a bit and give others a chance to penetrate the semis, pick Aya.

I am now going to pray that we’d get the best results come Sunday night #forthePhilippines

America’s Next Top Model Cycle 24 Episode 9 Photoshoot – Beauty is Movement

This sort of recap of last week’s episode is kind of late but seriously, how many of you were disappointed with the turn of events? I would’ve thought that with the quality of her photos, she’s a shoo-in to walk the final runway but apparently, there really are a lot of things that we do not see in the show. [sarcasm]

Okay, so on with the show. Judge Ashley Graham and movement coach Jermaine Browne facilitated a motion shoot challege which was yet again won by Jeana. The girl is on a streak yeah?

For the shoot this episode, they were photographed with a huge paper parachute as their backdrop/props. This couture shoot is probably my favorite this season and again, the usual frontrunner (meaning Khrystyana) delivered the goods! Mama is here to win!

Khrystyana

Erin

I don’t like this shot of Erin. I find it all kinds of awkward if I’m being honest.

Rio

It’s a wonder why Rio is still in the house, don’t you think? No big conspiracy or some shit, but are they letting her stay just to annoy us? I mean, the girl takes mediocre photos and has a really bad attitude. Hmm…

Jeana

I kind of agree with the judges here when they sent Jeana at the bottom. This would’ve been a good shot if she did more shapes with her dress since the color is already very striking.

Kyla

I really liked this shot of Kyla. I mean, I loved her awkward pose and her face was okay with me. I would’ve put Erin in her place tbh.

Brendi K.

So she decided to leave the competition. Might as well not apply right? She could’ve given her slot to other girls. Oh well…

FIrst Call Out: Shanice
2, Khrystyana
3. Erin
4. Rio
5. Jeana
6. Kyla
Quit: Brendi K

Binibining Pilipinas 2018 Specials: Third Hot Picks!

We are just two weeks away from the finals night of choosing the next batch of Binibining Pilipinas queens and it’s getting more and more intense for our forty girls in terms of consistency and peaking at the right time. I feel like some faded since my last hot picks and had trouble getting the attention of fans and pundits when it matters. With that being said, here are my hot picks before my final prediction for the finale. It’s very difficult to topple Catriona out of the top spot at this point. There’s no denying that the hype around her is justifiably real. She’s not flawless but she knows how to capitalize her other assets that pundits tends to forget what she’s lacking. Catriona by any means is a league of her own. During the most recent fashion show at Kia Theater, her performance completely annihilated the compeition. She has Miss Universe Philippines written all over her face. At this stage of the competition, she’s still very much the one to beat.

Ahtisa Manalo has finally overtook Vicky Rushton in terms of overall performance in the last couple of weeks. On stage, she was glowing and she’s getting better and better. She’s now poised to spoil the game from the initial frontrunners for the Binibining Pilipinas – International title.

Michele Gumabao’s transformation has been nothing short of amazing. Her metamorphosis from being a national volleyball athlete to being a national beauty pageant contestant is one of the best things to happen this season. She’s doing her assignment and it’s paying off.

Vicky Rushton is still a contender for one of the crowns. A Miss International prototype, she’s still one of the favorites to win but recently, she’s been playing it safe which might cost her a title. She’s still amongst the strongest though, but she definitely need to step it up!

Ena Velasco may have fallen from the top of my list but she’s still firmly in the winners’ circle for me. I feel like she’s being overpowered by the stronger contestants but her overall performance from the last two weeks is really nothing to scoff about. Like Vicky, she’s a strong contender but she’s slowly fading. I am hoping that she’d gain more steam as we approach the finale.

Ulimate Spoiler:
I’d like to include other girls here like Samantha Bernardo, Eva Patalinjug, Karen Gallman and even Roseantonette but methinks that Aya VERDADERO Abesamis’ pedigree is something that would be use to advance her fight in the competition. Not to take away too much credit from her but she’s being overpowered by the “talks” of her connections. It’s a nasty thing to imply that she’d be nowehere without these connections but If I were a betting man, I’d place my bet on her to spoil everything. She seems determine to prove her worth but will it be enough to topple the top 5 above her? We’ll see…

Paddylast Inc’s Oscars 2018 Predictions!

It’s that time of the year again to give out the film industry’s highest honors in Hollywood, and I have a feeling that there’ll be a bit of a surprise in what most assumed were already ‘locked’ categories.

Best Picture: This is going to be an easy pick for me. As much as I’d love for The Shape of Water to win this award, I have to give it to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. From a technical perspective and in terms of the story, The Shape of Water hands down wins this one, but it feels like, based on the most recent winners from this category, the voters tend to lean towards something that has a stronger and more in-your-face social impact. Three Billboards doesn’t have the subtlety that Del Toro’s film has, so that alone hurts The Shape of Water’s chances.

Most Likely to Upset: The Shape of Water

Best Director: This should go to Guillermo Del Toro. He may not win Best Picture, but The Shape of Water is arguably his best work to date, and it would be an injustice not to give him this nod.

Most Likely to Upset: I want to say that this is already locked for him, but for shock value, I’m going to say Greta Gerwig for her directorial debut in Lady Bird. This scenario is highly unlikely, but I won’t be that mad if she steals this one from Del Toro.

Best Actress: (Locked)
I’ve seen all of the films of the actresses nominated in this category, so it’s kind of difficult for me to regard anyone as THE BEST. With that being said, I feel like Frances McDormand is already locked in to win this. Sally Hawkins is a good second choice, but McDormand just happened to sweep all of the precursor awards, so there’s that.

Best Actor: I’d be in the minority right here predicting an upset by Timothée Chalamet over the season’s frontrunner Gary Oldman. I initially pegged Oldman as locked to win this, but I have this nagging feeling that this would be the biggest upset of the night. Chalamet’s performance in Call Me By Your Name does seem like a once-in-a-blue-moon performance from such a very young and promising actor. In comparison to Oldman’s stunning portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, Chalamet didn’t need the help of prosthetics to actually translate something extraordinary onto the screen.

Most Likely to Upset: Timothee Chalamet to Gary Oldman’s frontrunner position.

Best Supporting Actress: (Locked)
I don’t even know what to say about Allison Janney. She’s just simply sublime in I, Tonya.

Best Supporting Actor: (Locked)
Sam Rockwell’s portrayal of a racist police officer is entirely believable; it’s so easy to get angry at both the actor and the character he’s playing. That’s how effective he was. This is a solid performance, and no one even comes close.

Best Original Screenplay:
The Shape of Water – Guillermo Del Toro & Vanessa Taylor

Best Adapted Screenplay:
Call Me By Your Name – James Ivory

Best Animated Feature Film:
Coco – Lee Unkrich & Darla K. Anderson

Best Original Score:
Star Wars: The Last Jedi – John Williams

Best Original Song:
Remember Me from Coco by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez

Best Cinematography:
Blade Runner 2049 – Roger Deakins

Best Makeup and Hairstyling:
Victoria & Abdul – Lou Sheppard

Best Production Design:
Blade Runner 2049 – Dennis Gassner, Alessandra Querzola

Most Likely to Upset: Victoria & Abdul

Best Costume Design:
For something about Costume, this should be locked for Phantom Thread.

Most Likely to Upset: Victoria & Abdul

Best Film Editing:
Dunkirk – Lee Smith (Locked)

Best Sound Editing: (Locked)
Dunkirk

Best Sound Mixing: (Locked)
Dunkirk

Best Foreign Language Film:
Una Mujer Fantastic a (A Fantastic Woman) from Chile by Sebastian Lelio

Most Likely To Upset: Sweden’s The Square by Ruben Ostlund.

Beat Visual Effects:
Blade Runner 2049

I don’t have any basis for the documentary features, so I won’t make any predictions for those categories.

Film Review: Lady Bird (2017)

The Dixie Chicks once asked the questions – who’s never left home? Who’s never struck out? I think that most of the time, it’ll come to a point in our lives that we are ‘Lady Bird.’ I said that because when we’re young, there’s always this feeling that our world is too small for us, that we wanted to explore what life has to offer, what this world is waiting to show us. We want something so much that we persevere to get them. Sometimes doing things that we didn’t think was wrong when we did it and ended up regretting but at the end of the day, we have this sense of fulfilment.

Lady Bird are those feelings so cleverly translated by Greta Gerwig into a film. This coming of age film so brilliantly led by Saoirse Ronan is a tale as old as time that just works in so many ways because that is basically everyone of us when we’re at the cusps of adulthood.

Ronan playing the eponymous role was as usual terrifically sublime as the rebellious daughter who won’t let anyone hinder her aspirations – not by her friends, her school advisors and definitely not by her mother played by the equally wonderful Laurie Metcalf. Sometimes, it’s almost painful to watch their interactions or more of altercations because there’s vulnerability in both of their characters that everyone would relate to. You’d probably point out, hey! That’s me with my daughter – ouch! or that is me and my mom/dad sometimes!  Ronan and Metcalf made their chemistry as mother and daughter so palpable that it resonated so much with so many people.

Gerwig tried to snatch a lot of wigs for this film and she did so fabulously! Lady Bird is a cult classic waiting to happen. I wouldn’t even be mad for a sequel!

At the 90th Academy Awards, Lady Bird has received five nominations that includes Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress in a Leading and Supporting Roles and Best Original Screenplay.

Director: Greta Gerwig

Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Lucas Hedges, Tracy Letts, Beanie Feldstein, Timothee Chalamet.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Binibining Pilipinas 2018 Specials: Top 10 National Costume!

I’ve just been to the KIA Theater last night (about 6 hours ago) for the presentation of this year’s Binibining Pilipinas National Costume. This year, it wasn’t just a celebration of beauty but also of culture and heritage. Filipino designers once again showcased their creativity, inspiring and elaborate designs that will make you proud to be a Filipino.

With that being said, 10 costumes were adjudged to be the best amongst the 40 amazing designs. But before that, lemme share my very own Top 10 vs the actual Top 10.

My personal Top 3 are from Catriona Gray (#20), Vicky Rushton (#1) and the one wearing the white hijab – (#4) Ana Patricia Asturias.

Below are the actual Top 10 who made the cut and votes from the public thru Binibining Pilipinas’ social media will determine the winner of the Best in National Costume award.

ICYMI: Maureen Wroblewitz is now with Storm Model Management!

Asia’s Next Top Model Cycle 5 winner and the first Filipino to win said title was recently welcomed by Storm Model Management in the agency’s Instagram post last week.

This is part of Maureen’s prizes from winning the region-wide modeling competition. Here’s to hoping she’d book more jobs overseas! 🍾🎉

Congratulations, Maureen!!! 💕

Film Review: Dunkirk (2017)

The film is a narrative of the successful evacuation of the Allied troops from Dunkirk as the Nazi Army advances to the French city. The battle of Dunkirk depicted one of the historical catalysts that made the people in Europe come together against the war propagated by the Nazi regime.

The Academy gave Nolan’s film eight nominations including his first directorial nod, Best Picture and Best Editing. The latter I wholeheartedly agree and would predict this film to win said category. As for Nolan’s vision, I feel that the whole thing was well-executed, the way he played with our emotions but didn’t really hit the mark of capturing the essence of the topic. This was Dunkirk glossed over. There was too much technicality, hence the great editing, but it lacks the gravitas of what really transpired in those days. Yes, we see them soldiers fighting for their lives to stay alive, to be able to survive and be with their loved ones but I somehow find it devoid of motivation.

I thought it was critically overrated but at the end of the day – I still enjoyed it more than the Darkest Hour so that at least should be a consolation. Despite the measly character development, I’d still give it a 3 star ratings because it’s Nolan being Nolan and on a technical spectrum, this is heaps better than most films from last year.

Dunkirk scored eight nominations at the 90th Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Production Design

Director: Christopher Nolan
Cast: Fionn Whitehead, Barry Keoghan, Mark Rylance, Jack Lowden, Tom Glynn-Carney, Tom Hardy, Harry Styles
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

America’s Next Top Model Cycle 24 Episode 8 Photoshoot: Beauty is Social

Were you completely shocked when this season’s frontrunner end up at the bottom two this episode? I mean, I call BS when they call her inconsistent! If anything, she is the only consistent model in the house delivering spectacular shot each episode! 🙄

If you’ve been watching the show but have not seen this episode, you probably have a clue on who almost got the boot!

Model Jordan Dunn made an appearance this week facilitating the challenge of advertising her clothing brand. And surprise! Jeana won the challenge…

At the photoshoot, Mama TyTy took over again and shot the girls with plus-size male models while covered in gold body paint.

Brendi K: I thought she’s playing it safe for weeks now. I want her to step up next week. This is SAFE. The guy is more fierce and he’s not even showing his face!

Erin: Uhhmmm

Jeana: Her face looks ethereal right here. Girl is in it to win it!

Kyla: Gurl finally woke up!

Rio: girl, I cannot wait to see you get the boot next week. *fingers-crossed*

Shanice: Not a fan of this photo but I loved Shanice!

Khrystyana: I loved this shot. It’s not my favorite but it’s not the worst for me. And the calling her inconsistent is again utter crap. Ekkk

Sandra – she finally bored the hell out of the judges. ByeGurl!
