My October-December 2017 Book Haul!

So here’s my final book haul for the year 2017! Whoot hoot! I’ve actually read of all them already but as I’ve said – I loved having my own copies – it’s sort of easier when I’d like to reread them (I am actually rereading the Andrew Brawley now in between books haha)

If you are not familiar with the titles, five of these seven books are all young adult titles save for Texas Pride by Kindle Alexander and On Dublin Street by Samantha Young – both are spectacular reads and both were purchased from Book For Less (along with the Official Illustrated Movie Companion of Beautiful Creatures)

The other four came from Fully Booked which amounted to around 2600-2700 pesos. I discovered though, that Mackenzi Lee’s The Gentelman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue is P185 cheaper at the National Bookstore – a shame really cuz I saw it first in Fullybooked! I’m still happy though because I enjoyed the book plus, Fullybooked offers more LGBTQ+ title than the National Bookstore.

On Dublin Street – Samantha Young
Jocelyn Butler has been hiding from her past for years. But all her secrets are about to be laid bare …

Four years ago, Jocelyn left her tragic past behind in the States and started over in Scotland, burying her grief, ignoring her demons, and forging ahead without attachments. Her solitary life is working well – until she moves into a new apartment on Dublin Street, where she meets a man who shakes her carefully guarded world to its core.

Braden Carmichael is used to getting what he wants, and he’s determined to get Jocelyn into his bed. Knowing how skittish she is about entering a relationship, Braden proposes an arrangement that will satisfy their intense attraction without any strings attached.

But after an intrigued Jocelyn accepts, she realizes that Braden won’t be satisfied with just mind-blowing passion. The stubborn Scotsman is intent on truly knowing her . . . down to the very soul.

Texas Pride – Kindle Alexander
When mega movie star and two time Academy Award winner, Austin Grainger voluntarily gave up his dazzling film career, his adoring fan base thought he’d lost his mind. For Austin, the seclusion of fifteen hundred acres in the middle of Texas sounds like paradise. No more cameras, paparazzi, or overzealous media to hound him every day and night. Little did the sexiest man alive know when one door closes, another usually opens. And Austin’s opened by way of a sexy, hot ranch owner right next door.

Kitt Kelly wasn’t your average rancher. He’s young, well educated and has hidden his sexuality for most of his life. When his long time wet dream materializes as his new neighbor it threatens everything he holds dear. No way the ranching community would ever accept him if he came out. With every part of his life riding on the edge, can Kitt risk it all for a chance at love or will responsibility to his family heritage cost him his one chance at happiness?

He Forgot to Say Goodbye – Benjamin Alire Sáenz
Ramiro Lopez and Jake Upthegrove don’t appear to have much in common. Ram lives in the Mexican-American working-class barrio of El Paso called “Dizzy Land.” His brother is sinking into a world of drugs, wreaking havoc in their household. Jake is a rich West Side white boy who has developed a problem managing his anger. An only child, he is a misfit in his mother’s shallow and materialistic world. But Ram and Jake do have one thing in common: They are lost boys who have never met their fathers. This sad fact has left both of them undeniably scarred and obsessed with the men who abandoned them. As Jake and Ram overcome their suspicions of each other, they begin to move away from their loner existences and realize that they are capable of reaching out beyond their wounds and the neighborhoods that they grew up in. Their friendship becomes a healing in a world of hurt.

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue – Mackenzi Lee
Henry “Monty” Montague was born and bred to be a gentleman, but he was never one to be tamed. The finest boarding schools in England and the constant disapproval of his father haven’t been able to curb any of his roguish passions—not for gambling halls, late nights spent with a bottle of spirits, or waking up in the arms of women or men.

But as Monty embarks on his Grand Tour of Europe, his quest for a life filled with pleasure and vice is in danger of coming to an end. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family’s estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy.

Still it isn’t in Monty’s nature to give up. Even with his younger sister, Felicity, in tow, he vows to make this yearlong escapade one last hedonistic hurrah and flirt with Percy from Paris to Rome. But when one of Monty’s reckless decisions turns their trip abroad into a harrowing manhunt that spans across Europe, it calls into question everything he knows, including his relationship with the boy he adores.

The Inexplicable Logic of My Life – Benjamin Alire Sáenz
The first day of senior year:

Everything is about to change. Until this moment, Sal has always been certain of his place with his adoptive gay father and their loving Mexican-American family. But now his own history unexpectedly haunts him, and life-altering events force him and his best friend, Samantha, to confront issues of faith, loss, and grief.

Suddenly Sal is throwing punches, questioning everything, and discovering that he no longer knows who he really is—but if Sal’s not who he thought he was, who is he?

Book Review: Reservations – Kindle Alexander

You all know how much I adore their work. Just search Kindle Alexander in my search bar to the right, and you’ll see. It’s incredible how effortlessly they create characters you can’t help but fall in love with. (Or maybe it just seems effortless because every single time… come on, girls!)

“Reservations” is no exception. I was genuinely excited when they revealed the cover, and it truly is beautiful. I found myself wondering, what could this book be about?

Well, “Reservations” lives up to its stunning cover. As expected, Kindle Alexander delivers once again.

Levi Silva’s dream of becoming a doctor is put on hold after his father’s death from cancer leaves him responsible for raising two teenage boys on his own. With ends barely meeting, he finds himself working in a gentlemen’s club called Reservations.

Enter Thane Walker, the commitment-phobic owner of Reservations, who is captivated by Levi’s beauty and demeanor. Both are stubborn and know what they want from a relationship.

The story delves into exactly that. Thane is utterly frustrating and an A-grade A-hole in the beginning, but as the story progresses and we learn more about his past, things start to make sense. Levi, on the other hand, is on point in every way. I found myself totally high-fiving him for his decisions regarding Thane. The boy’s got guts! Haha!

Clearly, I’m on Team Levi, so it’s entertaining to watch Thane squirm! Speaking of “squirming,” there’s quite a bit of that—I don’t know if it’s just me, but I found myself more drawn to the pre- and post-sex scenes when they have meaningful conversations. That felt more intimate to me.

We also see some familiar faces from other books, and I was especially thrilled to see Reed Kensington! I loved “Up in Arms,” and I wish Trevor had made an appearance too!

Overall, this is another solid effort from the duo of Kindle Alexander. I absolutely adored the main characters. I also enjoyed reading about Luke, Logan, and the delightful Julian (hurry up with his story, please!!!), and I can’t recommend this book highly enough!

Book Review: Painted On My Heart – Kindle Alexander

Blurb: Artist Kellus Hardin let love and loyalty cloud his past decisions, a mistake he definitely won’t make again. Now, lost and alone, he’s left to pick up the shattered pieces of his broken heart while facing the truth of his reality.

Arik Layne exudes power, confidence, and determination. But when an encounter with the guarded artist shakes him to the core and alters all his future goals, he finds more than just his heart on the line.

For Kellus, opening himself to love isn’t an option.
All Arik wants is to make the artist his.
Can love create a masterpiece when it’s painted on your heart?

This may contain spoilers.

Now, this isn’t quite a backlog review, as I just finished reading this book this month. I know! I know! I haven’t been as active or up-to-date with all the books coming out lately because, well, adulting demands attention. But let’s not dwell on that. Straight to the point: I absolutely loved this book. LOVED IT.

There aren’t many authors who create main characters with HIV, most likely due to the stigma attached to it. Unfortunately, that stigma in real life tends to seep into the literature we consume as well. I’ve come across few books with main characters afflicted by HIV that are as well-crafted and compelling as this one. I truly appreciated what the author did here. It was touching.

The story is incredibly emotional, perhaps the most angst-filled book by these authors. The sorrow emanating from Kellus is almost tangible on every page. The lost love, lost respect, lost lover… it’s heartbreaking.

Arik’s entrance into his life is like a lifeline. He is exactly what Kellus needed in order to move forward. The intensity of their chemistry is undeniable, and their love feels genuine. It wasn’t rushed, but it wasn’t dragging its feet either. They took their time.

Arik’s role in helping Kellus heal is beautiful. I’m deeply moved by these two characters.

While there are moments of frustration throughout the story, they are overshadowed by Arik’s personality and Kellus’s acceptance of love and loss.

I simply want to express my gratitude to the authors for creating this beautiful book. Highly recommended.

Book Review: Full Domain (Nice Guys, #3) – Kindle Alexander

I thought I should share this review before I post my upcoming reviews for two other works by the authors. This is another backlogged review, one that I hadn’t posted here since I shared a mini-review on Goodreads back in January of last year.

To be fair and honest, I am a fan of the authors—yes, in case you’re still unaware—Kindle Alexander is a duo of lovely ladies who adore the LGBTQ+ community, just like myself, and they’re enriching our lives with their magnificent writing!

First, let’s talk about that cover. I mean, come on, it’s a work of art in itself. I want to print that cover and hang it on my wall.

Now, onto the not-so-easy part: copying and pasting my review from Goodreads. This is, admittedly, my least favorite from the duo, and I have to say, I loved all of their books prior to this one. Let’s start by reading the blurb:

Honor, integrity, and loyalty are how Deputy US Marshal Kreed Sinacola lives his life. A former SEAL now employed by the Special Operations Group of the US Marshal Service, Kreed spent most of his life working covert operations and avoiding relationships. Never one to mix business with pleasure, his boundaries blur and his convictions are put to the test when he finally comes face-to-face with the hot computer geek he’s been partnered with. Hell-bent on closing the ongoing case for his longtime friend, he pushes past his own limits and uncovers more than he expects.

Aaron Stuart strives for one thing: justice. Young and full of idealism, his highly sought after computer skills land him a position with the National Security Agency. Aaron’s biggest hazard at his job is cramped fingers, but all that changes when he is drawn into the middle of a dangerous federal investigation. Aaron gets more than he bargained for when the FBI partners him with a handsome and tempting deputy US marshal. His attraction to the inked up, dark-haired man provides another kind of threat altogether. Aaron tries desperately to place a firewall around his heart and fight his developing feelings, knowing one misstep on his part could ultimately destroy him.

The solution isn’t as easy as solving the case, which is treacherous enough as it is. But the growing sexual attraction between them threatens to derail more than just Kreed’s personal convictions as he quickly learns temptation and matters of the heart rarely fit easily into the rules he’s lived by. Will Kreed be able to convince Aaron to open his heart and face the fact that sometimes the answers aren’t always hidden in code?

While I usually can’t stop talking about books by Kindle Alexander, this latest installment of the series left me feeling a bit unsatisfied. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I was hoping for something more innovative. It felt like a rehash of previous characters and plots, lacking the freshness I usually find in Alexander’s work.

Despite this, I must say that the book,as usual is well-written, even if it didn’t quite hit the mark for me. There were moments of repetition and an abundance of explicit scenes that made it a bit challenging to get through, and some character traits felt overplayed.

However, I don’t want to deter others from giving it a chance. It might just not have been my cup of tea, but I remain a fan of the author. After all, some of her other works are among my favorites in this genre, and I’m eager to see what she comes up with next.

Book Review: Secret – Kindle Alexander

Secret is a social media application that allows its users to communicate without being traced, and Tristan Wilder, owner of Wilder-Nation, wants to buy it badly.

Dylan Reeves, the creator of said app, didn’t anticipate the explosive chemistry between himself and Tristan. But he has his own secret to keep—a devoted husband with three kids. Dylan’s world is suddenly in turmoil when he gives in to the intense attraction he feels for someone else for the first time. How long can he keep his secret, and is there a chance for him to explore what he feels so deeply in his heart?

Now, here’s an author you can rely on to deliver a story that leaves you smiling from ear to ear for hours, or even days, after reading. Readers will enjoy the realistic yet unique approach the author takes toward Dylan Reeves’s character. You can’t help but feel for him, especially considering how much he has sacrificed— even his personal happiness—to keep his family intact and happy over the years. At times, it seemed like there was no way for him to emerge from his very deep closet without causing a major scene, but he’s a good guy who deserves good things in his life.

Then there’s Tristan. Between the two main characters, I’d say I’m more sympathetic toward him. I mean, these guys are both saints, but Tristan is like Mr. So Perfect—so patient and understanding throughout the book that I sometimes felt bad for him because of how uptight Dylan could be about his secret.

Readers were curious about the whole setup of Dylan’s relationship with his wife. Don’t worry too much, people; there was no major drama in this book. Just a little pinch of angst from Dylan’s part, which is totally understandable, but overall, it’s still decidedly a comfort read. And have I already mentioned the steamy scenes between Dylan and Tristan? Oh. My. God! I need some cool drinks right here!

With that being said, I highly suggest you get your copy of this book. It’s totally worth your money, and come on, you can’t go wrong with Kindle Alexander. With each new book released by her, you know you’ve got a winner—no questions asked. But I guess that’s not a secret anymore…

Book Review: Full Disclosure – Kindle Alexander

I’ve been eagerly anticipating this one since reading “Double Full,” and I’m sure glad it didn’t disappoint. Not at all.

Deputy US Marshal Mitch Knox is still on the hunt to catch the culprit of the hate crimes he’s been working on for months. While taking some time off from the case in a Dallas bar, he spots the shy and sexy state trooper, Cody Turner. An involvement with Mitch is the last thing Cody needs on his way to reaching his dream of becoming a Texas Ranger. But Mitch is the persistent sort, and he’d do anything to get close to the sexy cowboy, though both are unaware of the looming danger that may threaten more than their careers.

I find it somehow different from the rest of Kindle’s books, but it was a welcome change. Usually, it’s the main couple that really grabs your attention, but this time, there are extra characters that somehow steal the spotlight from them every now and then. Not that it’s a bad thing, since I think it works well with the story. Now it feels like 2015 takes forever to arrive waiting for Aaron and Kreed’s story(?)

Anyhow, this may be a different approach from what we’re used to from the previous books, but being part of a super sexy series, I don’t think there’s any need to fret 🙂 Once again, SUPER AUTHOR Kindle Alexander delivered and provided us avid readers our romantic fix this year (twice now after “Always”), and we’re treated to old and new characters that we’ve come to love.

Here’s the synopsis of Full Disclosure:

Deputy United States Marshal Mitch Knox apprehends fugitives for a living. His calm, cool, collected attitude and devastatingly handsome good looks earn him a well-deserved bad boy reputation, both in the field and out. While away on an assignment, he blows off some steam at a notorious Dallas nightclub. Solving the case that has plagued him for months takes a sudden backseat to finding out all there is to know about the gorgeous, shy blond sitting alone at the bar.

Texas State Trooper Cody Turner is moving up the ranks, well on his way to his dream of being a Texas Ranger. While on a two-week mandatory vacation, he plans to relax and help out on his family’s farm. Mitch is the last distraction Cody needs, but the tatted up temptation that walks into the bar and steals his baseball cap is too hard to ignore.

As Mitch’s case gains nationwide attention, how will he convince the sexy state trooper that giving him a chance won’t jeopardize his life’s plan…especially when the evil he’s tracking brings the hate directly to his doorstep, threatening more than just their careers. via goodreads

Book Review: Up In Arms – Kindle Alexander

I’ve been completely engrossed in this book, unable to tear myself away until I reach its final page. It easily ranks as my second favorite among the five titles I’ve read from Kindle Alexander. Despite being shorter than the others, I find myself more deeply connected to the characters in this one.

Truly, this story is irresistibly adorable and incredibly sweet! We’re introduced to Reed Kensington, a power attorney turned international playboy seeking to settle down, and the very shy yet undeniably sexy Marine Sergeant, Trevor West. Reed exudes confidence as a self-made man who always gets what he wants, and from the moment he met Trevor at his brother’s wedding rehearsal, he knew he wanted him. Trevor, however, is reserved and insecure, feeling he doesn’t measure up to Reed’s standards and constantly doubting himself. It’s heartwarming. I think I’m completely in love with this character. (LOL, I can’t…)

The story unfolds seamlessly, becoming more captivating with every page turn. I particularly appreciated how the author introduced characters seemingly out of nowhere, yet managed to weave them into the narrative effortlessly, especially towards the latter part of the story. It’s truly amazing!

I wish I could articulate more about this book and about the author, but I find myself nearly out of adjectives to convey just how talented Kindle Alexander is. She’s undoubtedly earned a spot on my list of favorite authors!

Book Review: The Current Between Us – Kindle Alexander

This wonderful novel invites us into the world of two very distinct and lovely characters. Gage Synclair is a retiring photo-journalist who now focuses on his art gallery, showcasing his stunning photos as he transitions from the field. Enter the sexy master electrician Trent Cooper, contracted by the gallery – oh, and the daddy of two adorable kids!

From the outset, there was already sexual tension between them, with each lusting over the other and finally realizing this could turn into something good. But, as usual, complications arise when least expected. Dang it! This magnitude of complication threatens to destroy what they have and hurt the people they care about. It’s a really fascinating story of an ultra-rich journalist falling for the too-hot-for-his-own-good electrician and father of two.

I love that Trent is responsible and has a very sensitive side. He’s perfection and just drool-worthy! LOL. Gage, on the other hand, is equally dreamy, but he’s almost too unfreakingbelievable with this billion-dollar worth of a family. Like Christian Grey-rich or something.

This is my fourth book from this author, and I’m just mesmerized by this story. It was so hard to put down that I actually skipped my movie night with my girls just to finish it quickly, and boy, was it worth it! The twist at the end was rather abrupt and kind of out of nowhere (well, that’s just for me – I figured it had something to do with the report, like someone would die or something, but I didn’t really expect that), but I still loved that it’s fast-paced!

Tying loose ends is one of Kindle Alexander’s excellent traits as an author. She knows her thing! I almost wished, though, that the story went on longer because seriously, Kindle knows how to bring characters to life. My standing ovation from Manila to wherever Kindle Alexander is!!! Bravo!!
