Book Review: Priddy’s Tale – Harper Fox

Priddys TaleDate of Publication: June 20, 2016
Genre and Themes: LGBTQI, Romance, Fantasy, Folklore
Format: 159 pages, ebook
Publisher: FoxTales Publications
Cover Artist: Harper Fox
ISBN: 9781910224557
Characters: Priddy, Merou

Blurb: What doesn’t kill you sometimes makes you wish it had…

Priddy’s a lost soul in a part of Cornwall the tourists don’t get to see. He’s young, sweet-natured and gorgeous, but that’s not enough to achieve escape velocity from his deadbeat village and rotten family life.

He’s a drifter and a dreamer, and self-preservation isn’t his strong suit. An accidental overdose of a nightclub high leaves him fractured, hallucinating, too many vital circuits fried to function in a tough world. When a friend offers him winter work in a lighthouse – nothing to do but press the occasional button and keep the windows clean – he gratefully accepts.

His plans to live quietly and stay out of trouble don’t last very long. A ferocious Atlantic storm washes a stranger to Priddy’s lonely shore. For a shipwrecked sailor, the new arrival seems very composed. He’s also handsome as hell, debonair, and completely unconcerned by Priddy’s dreadful past.

Priddy has almost given up on the prospect of any kind of friendship, and a new boyfriend – let alone a six-foot beauty with eerily good swimming skills – out of the question entirely. But Merou seems to see undreamed-of promise in Priddy, and when they hit the water together, Priddy has to adapt to Merou’s potentials too, and fast. His lover from the sea might be a mere mortal from the waist up, but south of that line…

Far-flung west Cornwall has a hundred mermaid tales. Priddy’s loved the stories all his life. Now he has to face up to a wildly impossible truth. Merou’s life depends upon his courage and strength, and if Priddy can only find his way in the extraordinary world opening up all around him, all the ocean and a human lifetime needn’t be enough to contain the love between merman and mortal.

***

Let me say right off the bat that this one is one of the best books I’ve read this year. Do I even need to write more after that? Hah! Okay, let’s do it but tis’ really going to be a short one. Okay, so at first I wasn’t sure about the blurb because it obviously involves a “creature of the sea” – a merman no less! I was thinking – oh no, this is going to be corny as hell! But let me tell you why I always say Harper Fox is a genius storyteller. Reading ‘Priddy’s Tale,’ she made me believe everything about Priddy – his struggles from his abusive father, his ‘drugging’ incident, his lonesomeness and finally meeting his one true love – Merou! She made me believe it all. Ugh. I’m getting choked. Oookay… Harper Fox if you must know is a whimsical storyteller so this story is basically no different from most of her stories in terms of her skills in world and character building. Her apt description of the rolling sea surrounding the lonesomeness of Priddy is so crisp I could almost taste salt in my tongue. Hah! I know right? This is how good a writer Harper Fox is. So if you’re hesitant to read this just like me in the beginning, you really shouldn’t be. It’s really good and I know that I will be rereading this one very soon! I cannot recommend this highly enough!

About The Author
Harper Fox is an M/M author with a mission. She’s produced six critically acclaimed novels in a year and is trying to dispel rumours that she has a clone/twin sister locked away in a study in her basement. In fact she simply continues working on what she loves best– creating worlds and stories for the huge cast of lovely gay men queuing up inside her head. She lives in rural Northumberland in northern England and does most of her writing at a pensioned-off kitchen table in her back garden, often with blanket and hot water bottle.

She lives with her SO Jane, who has somehow put up with her for a quarter of a century now, and three enigmatic cats, chief among whom is Lucy, who knows the secret of the universe but isn’t letting on. When not writing, she either despairs or makes bread, specialities foccacia and her amazing seven-strand challah. If she has any other skills, she’s yet to discover them.

ARC Book Review: Rented Heart – Garrett Leigh

Rented HeartDate of Publication: September 12, 2016
Genre and Themes: LGBTQI, Romance, Contemporary
Format: 228 pages, ebook
Publisher: Riptide Publishing
Cover Artist: Garrett Leigh
ISBN: 9781626493919
Characters: Liam Mallaney, Zac Payne

How I enjoyed reading this one! So far, I’ve read three books from the author just this year (including this one) and I enjoyed them all!

First though, can we just take a minute to admire the book’s beautiful cover?

Now with the story; it’s actually pretty simple but with a lot of angst from its main characters. We have Liam languishing in his lonesomeness months after his husband’s death and we have rent boy Zac who shoulders the responsibility of looking after his best friend, Jamie who apparently saved his life in the past. When they made their initial ‘transaction,’ they didn’t expect the spark that will ignite between them. Liam thinks that he’ll never fall in love again. Zac on the other hand doesn’t think he deserves Liam’s attention. When Zac’s life was put in peril, Liam had to decide whether he’d allow love to find its way between them and heal Zac’s rented heart.

Okay, so that’s my version of the blurb ^^ sounds more dramatic yeah? But I just loved Liam and Zac! They have such likability that you’d really root for them right off the bat. The plot of this story has been told several times if I’m being honest but the way Leigh told Zac and Liam’s story is just beautiful. There’s vibrancy in it, there’s the emotional depth with her characters and there’s consistency from start to finish so you’d really have to be on a comfy couch or bed before reading this one because I’m telling you, once you started this one, you’d want to finish it right away!

I am now getting the drift of Garrett Leigh’s writing style. She’s the kind of author who loves her character damaged and needed saving, she loves a good story of redemption, she’s the kind of author who writes about second chances. This feels like her own kind of sub-genre and she’s just so good in it. I am highly recommending this book! It’s just worth every minute reading it!

ARC Book Review: Running With The Pack – A.M. Burns & Caitlin Ricci

Running with the packDate of Publication: September 8, 2016
Genre and Themes: LGBTQI, Romance, Young Adult, Polyamory
Format: 180 pages, ebook
Publisher: Harmony Ink Press
Cover Artist: Bree Archer
ISBN: 9781634770644
Characters: Finn, Ivan, Adrian

Blurb: Finn is about to start his senior year of high school when he and his family move from Austin, Texas, to Woodland Park, Colorado. Everything is different—even the elevation—and Finn’s having a hard time getting used to his new home. Life takes a turn for the better when he meets Ivan Dubovasky at a farmers’ market. Finn finds not only a close new friend but a fulfilling volunteer position at the High Mountain Wolf and Wild Dog Center, which Ivan’s family runs. Before long Finn develops an affinity for the wolves under the center’s protection.

Things only get better for Finn when he starts a relationship with Ivan; and Ivan’s best friend, Adrian, who’s asexual, completes their small pack. But it all comes crashing down when the bully plaguing Adrian crosses the line and Adrian goes missing. Finn and Ivan are determined to bring their boyfriend home safe, but they might not be able to do it alone. Luckily there’s a special wolf ready to lend a paw.

***

This book is a very quick and pleasant read. Initially, I thought it involves “shifters” based on how the blurb was written and all throughout the first few chapters so I was surprised (and perhaps a bit disappointed) that it is actually about three boys coming-of-age with the “wolves” as their main link into discovering each other.

The story was told from Finn’s perspective whose family just moved to town. When he decided to volunteer into a wolf’s sanctuary, he meets the charismatic son of the sanctuary’s owner – Ivan and his best friend Adrian. Their friendship soon developed into a polyamorous relationship. Uhm, yeah. I’ll get to that later.

I’ve a couple of issues about the story. First, there’s no real conflict here. I thought the whole thing was focused on Adrian’s insecurity and his continuous need for self-assurance only because he’s asexual and keeps on getting bullied by the these two ‘homeschooled’ brothers who just go to school for a couple of subjects and made it their mission to bully Adrian. To be honest, the story doesn’t even need their characters.

Second, I thought they’re too young for such commitment *cough* the polyamorous relationship *cough* I find the development there way too fast for their age and it feels like it’s more of a set-up for convenience. Though I loved that the author presented it in a very wholesome way (no sex on page – to be honest, I don’t even remember if there’s even any.)

Overall, I thought the three of them (Finn, Ivan and Adrian) are real likable and for me to enjoy a story, I need to be able to like the characters. If I couldn’t relate to them, at least they’re likable enough for me to stick with it and this one did it for me. It’s something sweet, something quick and a good enough read to pass the time.

ARC Book Review: Connection Error (#gaymers #3) – Annabeth Albert

Connection ErrorDate of Publication: September 5, 2016
Genre and Themes: LGBTQI, Romance, Contemporary
Format: 66,000 words, ebook
Publisher: Carina Press
ASIN: B01A5O2ENG
Characters: Josiah Simmons, Ryan Orson

Blurb: It’s typical of video game programmer Josiah Simmons to be the last one on the plane on the way to the biggest meeting of his career. Though he’s (mostly) coping with his ADHD, he can’t handle another distraction. But he also can’t ignore his rugged seatmate—especially once he learns the military man’s a fan of his game.

Ryan Orson refuses to let his severe injuries pause his career as a navy SEAL. He’s got hours of grueling physical therapy ahead of him, and no time for anything that might get in the way of his return to active duty. But that doesn’t mean he’s above a little first-class flirtation with geeky-cute Josiah.

When a delay strands the pair in St. Louis, they agree to share a hotel room and a night of gaming. Neither expects their new connection to move to the next level in the light of day. Opposites may attract, but is this game over before it’s even begun?

***

So this is the third book off the ‘Gaymers Series’ and having read the last two installments and liking them, I’d say that the author is consistently hitting all the marks with this series. This one here is a different couple, of course. First chapter and I’m already in love with Josiah’s character. I didn’t even remember him in the second book – apparently, he was the guy who made the ‘bet’ from the last book. Not a big deal and you won’t missed out so you can enjoy this as a stand-alone book altogether.

At first, I wasn’t sure what to make of Ryan’s character but as I go along with the story – I kinda understood why he’s such an angsty bastard. There wasn’t really something new about the story but I loved how the author created the story in a rather straightforward approach. The two met, had sex, realized they need each other, move in together and they live happily ever after. In short, despite the cliché story – it’s still very much enjoyable. Though I’ve a bit of an issue involving Ryan, I didn’t particularly liked how he handled his ‘failure’ in the story. It feels like Josiah was used as some kind of a rebound . That was just me though, being all indignant for Josiah’s sake. LOL.

Aside from this, as I’ve said it was an overall enjoyable read. Heat is somewhere between 4 to 4.5, characters well developed and just a great addition to the series. I hope there’s more to come!

Book Review: Swear On This Life – Renée Carlino

Swear On This LifeDate of Publication: August 9, 2016
Genre and Themes: Romance, Contemporary
Format: 320 pages, ebook
Publisher: Atria Books
ISBN: 9781501105791
Cover Artist: Rodrigo Corral Design Inc
Characters: Emiline, Jase, Trevor, Cara

Blurb: When a bestselling debut novel from mysterious author J.Colby becomes the literary event of the year, Emiline reads it reluctantly. As an adjunct writing instructor at UC San Diego with her own stalled literary career and a bumpy long-term relationship, Emiline isn’t thrilled to celebrate the accomplishments of a young and gifted writer.

Yet from the very first page, Emiline is entranced by the story of Emerson and Jackson, two childhood best friends who fall in love and dream of a better life beyond the long dirt road that winds through their impoverished town in rural Ohio.

That’s because the novel is patterned on Emiline’s own dark and desperate childhood, which means that “J. Colby” must be Jase: the best friend and first love she hasn’t seen in over a decade. Far from being flattered that he wrote the novel from her perspective, Emiline is furious that he co-opted her painful past and took some dramatic creative liberties with the ending.

The only way she can put her mind at ease is to find and confront “J. Colby,” but is she prepared to learn the truth behind the fiction?

◊◊◊

This is going to be a very quick review because I just don’t want to say things this and that mightily justifying my reason for giving this book such a low rating. There, low rating so I didn’t like it.

Below are a ‘number’ of reasons why it just didn’t work for me.

1. Promising start but when she started reading ‘the book inside this book, ‘ it became increasingly predictable.

2. Jase – seriously? That’s your lame-ass way of reuniting with Em?

3. That reunion? I mean, that’s the reunion? Like seriously, THAT’S IT?

4. Em unable to finish the book like a normal book geek – jeez, this isn’t Lonesome Dove or House of Leaves love’.

This isn’t the Lord of the Rings trilogy either…ugh.

I mean, I get that she’s emotional and shit because that’s her life story but seriously? Again – awfully predictable and annoying AF.

5. Staying with Trevor is cruel, tbh.

6. Jase is nothing like the ‘book inside the book’ – Well, Em said it best – it’s not them.

This is the author’s most YA’ish work and it just didn’t work for me. It’s nowhere near the Sweet Thing, Nowhere But Here, After the Rain and that super lovely Before We Were Strangers…

One star for the story and another star for that awesome cover.

Book Review: Fight The Tide (Kick At The Darkness, #2) – Keira Andrews

Fight The TideDate of Publication: July 26, 2016
Genre and Themes: LGBTQ, Romance, Shifters, Sci-Fi,
Format: 250 pages, ebook
Publisher: KA Books
ISBN: 9781988260068
Cover Artist: Dar Albert
Characters: Parker Osborne, Adam Hawkins

Fight The Tide picks up where Kick At The Darkness left off so you really have to get hold of the first book before picking this one up. Don’t fret though, it going to be worth it for you. (will be inserting the blub here)

Adrift in a post-apocalyptic world, they only have each other. Is it enough?

A virus that turns the infected into zombie-like killers spreads through a burning world thrown into lawless chaos. Lovers Parker and Adam have escaped to the open sea when they hear a message over the airwaves from a place called Salvation Island—a supposed safe haven.

Orphaned as a child, werewolf Adam has always longed for a pack. He’s eager to investigate the island, but Parker doesn’t think for a nanosecond that the voice on the radio can be believed. He doesn’t trust anyone but Adam and is determined to keep it that way. They don’t need anyone else complicating their struggle to survive. Or do they?

Danger on the high seas can surface in a heartbeat, and if Parker and Adam aren’t careful, the current will drag them under.

Now, let’s talk about this second installment. I was already expecting this sequel and wished for it even so I was a very much happy kid when I finally got my copy! I totally enjoyed the first book and I loved Parker and Adam so it was nice to see how they are dealing with their lives trying to survive on a daily basis. There are differences between the two books. For one, this second book is devoid of humor. Parker’s monologues in the first book were hilarious and just a couple of months after the “Zombie apocalypse,” he just sounded all grown-up (in this sequel.) This has zero humor. But hey, no biggie with me. I thought it’s a nice touch that goes with the over-all story. Second, I loved that Parker’s taking charge of everything in this book with Adam being a bit – sorry – I really, have to say this but I thought he was a bit selfish here. I know he’s been yearning for something innate in him but for Pete’s sake – he was just freaking annoying at times. Plus, he’s not as charming as he is in the first book. Hands down, this was Parker’s book more than anyone else. The rest are secondary characters.

There was also this very touching scene involving secondary characters. It was just sad but I loved how realistic that scene was. Shit happens right? Internally, I was clapping while weeping. There’s also a rather surprising scene that I’d rather not share in this review. One clue tho: Hands. I feel like I’ve just read the whole chapter without feeling anything. I’m like, did that scene really just happen? Okay –

It was a solid story. The ending could’ve been a lot more exciting but it’s obviously a set up for the third (and final) book. There’s definitely a lot more we have to learn about Adam. It doesn’t look like it’s going to be a smooth road for the couple. I could smell an enemy lurking behind Adam trying to steal him from Parker. LOL. Don’t worry – it’s just my imagination already working the details for the third book but there was a great HFN for our couple here so all’s good. This one is a fantastic addition to Keira’s growing catalogue! Another worthwhile read for fans of the MM romance!

A Sentimental Book Review for ‘Red Sky At Morning’ by Richard Bradford (1968)

Red Sky At MorningPaperback, 256 pages
Published May 5th 1999 by Harper Perennial Modern Classics (first published 1968)

I’ve got my copy of this book from a used bookstore during my teenage years. It was just there and I got it for less than a dollar. Little did I know that this gem would turn out to be so good and will accompany me on my way to adulthood. It’s literally a “coming of age” story that made my transition into adulthood easier – I dunno, maybe I was readied by this book into the chaos that is ‘growing up.’ I feel like I’ve known Josh, Marcia and Steenie from my past and their adventures in Sagrado feels like a reflection of my own childhood. The humor, the quirky ambiance of Sagrado and the oh-so-colorful cast of side characters reminds me so much of home. Rarely does a book create magic like this [at least for me.] Up until this point, my decrepit paperback copy of Red Sky At Morning is still one of my most treasured book possessions.

And as I’m really on my way into the midst of my adulthood – it still remains a favorite of mine. I wish I was able to say back then that I want to be Josh, Steenie and Martha when I grow up! I guess I just did that now…

Book Review: Smoke & Mirrors (THIRDS, #7) – Charlie Cochet

Smoke & MirrorsDate of Publication: July 8, 2016
Genre and Themes: LGBTQ, Romance, Shifters, Comedy, Sci-Fi
Format: 230 pages, ebook
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
ISBN: 9781634773881
Cover Artist: L.C. Chase
Characters: Dexter J. Daley, Sloane Brodie

I’ve been spoiled by Charlie since the first book of this series and every release in between that is not part of the THIRDS universe so with this one being a Dex-Sloane book, I’ve terribly high expectations and this book more than surpassed them. This seventh installment just made me more excited than before on the next book of the series and especially for the ‘upcoming’ solo series of Dex and Sloane. I am in heaven with this news because I just soooo loved them!

So on with the book – it started from where the last book ended with Dex getting ‘kidnaped’ leaving Sloane dumbfounded because seriously, how the hell did that happen? Hhmm… yes, apparently it could happen even to the mighty Sloane. A certain Mr. Wolf was the culprit for Dex’s abduction and what happened just made me weep internally for my baby Dex. Sorry folks, ‘won’t spoil it for you but you will be absolutely livid for Dex’s sake. I don’t care how good looking Mr. Wolf is – I seriously do not like him. Period.

Right after that, Dex has been acting strange. See, strange things has been happening with him already from the last book so there are already clues there and I think I’ve already gathered what is about to happen here so I’m a bit ready and excited for it to finally happen. Again, no spoilers!

There’s this one scene though that I thought you should be ready for. Remember that if you love Dex, you should also love Sloane. As usual, this big bad Therian is being literally a big BAD Therian. He’s got an a-hole moment here and I was just so fucking disappointed at him. I was like – seriously, aren’t you guys way past this stage already? But yeah – stupid Sloane is stupid. Sorry, I love the guys but he’s an idiot. Sorry – Charlie – I just need to let it out.

Don’t worry tho, because he more than made up for it. It was just the sweetest thing ever and I hope that he’ll never do such a thing again. Although given that there will be a series exclusive for them, it’s unlikely that he’d stop becoming Mr. Running Man. *rolls eyes*

A lot of things are about to be reveal here which are very pivotal into the story arc of the THIRDS universe in general. It was very fascinating and very exciting at the same time.

But here’s the mini-spoiler I just need to air out to Charlie:

Please, have them do the THING in the first book of their series or atleast during the next installment of the THIRDS series!  Don’t wait for the 18th book for it to happen please…lol.

To end this, I just have to say that fans of the series won’t be disappointed with this new offering from Charlie Cochet. It was superbly written and something that I’d like to call a ‘classic Charlie.’

Review: Something Like Memories – Jay Bell

Something Like MemoriesDate of Publication: June 26, 2016
Genre and Theme: LGBT, Romance, Contemporary
Cover Artist: Andreas Bell

This is not a review per se but more of a ‘thank you’ post to Jay Bell’s generosity for us fans of the “Something Like” series. It’s another Timmy and Ben shorty you guys, and it’s FREE! Generous yeah? I’m a big Tim Wyman fanboy so everything about my book boyfriend, I will eat like a 2.50 peso kwek-kwek in the streets of Quezon City!

So this short story is about their upcoming anniversary – a highly debated topic between them because they cannot seem to agree with the date! I know right??! But guys, this is a big deal because it’s Tim and Ben ya’ll. These two are the royalty / power couple of the Something Like Universe.

Okay, so how do I find it? Well, I freaking loved it! Well, anything with Timmy is a sure hit for me so there’s that. There’s also the “Orlando shooting” incorporated into the story which resonated deeply with the couple since they’ve also been a victim of gun violence once in their lives. My heart will continually bleed for the 49 darling angels who’ve lost their lives because of the hatred of a soulless lunatic. Truly heartbreaking!

This freebie is yet again a wonderful gift from Jay and I want to thank him from the bottom of my heart. Best wishes to you and Andreas – may you always be happy and continue on being an inspiration for us single gay guys who are looking for that one true love that we may hope to find someday.

Happy Pride! Salamat!

Book Review: A Right Kind of Romance (A Kind of Stories, #2) – Lane Hayes

A Kind of RomanceDate of Publication: June 6, 2016
Genre and Themes: LGBTQ, Romance
Format: 234 pages, ebook
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
ISBN: 9781634773225
Cover Artist: Aaron Anderson
Characters: Zeke Gulden, Benny Ruggieri

Blurb:
Zeke Gulden is a ruthless Wall Street exec. His hard-edged, no-nonsense attitude has served him well in the cutthroat business world, but less so in his personal life. When he finds out his ex-boyfriend cheated on him with a coworker, Zeke can’t let go—not until he finds a way to get even. However, his meddlesome father has other ideas. The new hire at the family-owned bagel store is somewhat colorful, but his dad is sure he’s the perfect man for Zeke.

Benny Ruggieri is a fiercely proud New Yorker who dreams of making it big as a costume designer in the theater. In the meantime, he’s working two part-time jobs in the food biz. When his new boss sets him up with his successful son, Benny has zero expectations. If nothing else, he figures he can entertain himself by making the uptight businessman squirm. Instead, the two become unlikely friends with an inexplicable attraction they can’t ignore. Benny might be the one to help Zeke set aside his quest for revenge, if he’s willing to let go and forgive what he can’t forget… and give in to an unexpected kind of romance.

Review:
I’ve read the first book of this new series from Lane Hayes and I honestly cannot recall what that story is about but I do remember George! What I really enjoyed about this book is how there was control in the characterization of the main characters esp Zeke. I thought at first that I was going to hate him so much that I would end up giving this book a low rating but lo and behold – there’s just so much to love about his very complex character. He and Benny have very much something in common and I think that is where they clicked. They’re so different with their personalities and the looks but their past is what made them bridge that gap which Zeke was so adamantly was establishing at the beginning.

Benny is just a lovely muffin but I wished he wasn’t that kind and practical. I would’ve like a little retaliation from Zeke to his douche ex-boyfriend Taylor!!! I really do. But I guess that’s not gonna make sense in the totality of the story because whatever Zeke would do to Taylor would bounced back to his past involving George.

Let go… forgive and forget. ‘not that easy to be honest.

This is arguably the author’s best work to date!

An avid reader from an early age, she has always been drawn to a well-told love story with beautifully written characters. These days she prefers the leading roles to both be men. Lane discovered the M/M genre a few years ago and was instantly hooked. Her debut novel, Better Than Good, was a 2013 Rainbow Awards Finalist and her third in the Better Than Stories, Better Than Friends, received an Honorable Mention in the 2014 Rainbow Awards. Lane loves red wine, chocolate and travel, in no particular order (on second thought, maybe wine first). She resides in Southern California with her amazing husband and a regal old yellow Lab in an almost empty nest.
