Blurb: The first day of senior year:

Everything is about to change. Until this moment, Sal has always been certain of his place with his adoptive gay father and their loving Mexican-American family. But now his own history unexpectedly haunts him, and life-altering events force him and his best friend, Samantha, to confront issues of faith, loss, and grief.

Suddenly Sal is throwing punches, questioning everything, and discovering that he no longer knows who he really is—but if Sal’s not who he thought he was, who is he?

I couldn’t wait to read “The Inexplicable Logic Of My Life” by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. I chose to wait for the physical book instead of the ebook, and it was definitely worth it. And let me just say, it was an experience worth every moment of anticipation. This book, in its entirety, is a masterpiece.

The characters—Sal, Sam, Mr. V, Fito, Mima, and the others—leap off the pages with such vibrancy that they feel like friends you’d eagerly welcome into your life. Each character carries their own captivating story, enriching the tapestry of the narrative.

Salvador, the heart and soul of the tale, captured my admiration from the very beginning. His maturity juxtaposed with moments of childlike innocence endeared him to me in a profound way. If there ever was a fictional character to aspire to, Sal would be it.

In Sam, we find the perfect complement to Sal’s character—feisty, distinct, and an embodiment of unwavering friendship. Their dynamic is a testament to the richness of their bond.

Mr. V, or Vicente, stands out as a paragon of what it means to be a man—a complex portrayal that adds depth to the narrative’s exploration of masculinity.

Fito’s journey tugged at my heartstrings, showcasing resilience in the face of adversity—an admirable trait that resonates deeply with readers.

The beautiful language of the story goes beyond ordinary words, stirring a range of emotions that profoundly connect with me. It seamlessly intertwines themes of family, individuality, and love, prompting readers to contemplate their own journeys.

In all honesty, this book stands as the pinnacle of my reading journey this year. Benjamin Alire Sáenz has crafted a work of art that is simply unparalleled.

Benjamin Alire Saenz, you are incomparable!

About The Author
Benjamin Alire Sáenz (born 16 August 1954) is an award-winning American poet, novelist and writer of children’s books.

He was born at Old Picacho, New Mexico, the fourth of seven children, and was raised on a small farm near Mesilla, New Mexico. He graduated from Las Cruces High School in 1972. That fall, he entered St. Thomas Seminary in Denver, Colorado where he received a B.A. degree in Humanities and Philosophy in 1977. He studied Theology at the University of Louvain in Leuven, Belgium from 1977 to 1981. He was a priest for a few years in El Paso, Texas before leaving the order.

In 1985, he returned to school, and studied English and Creative Writing at the University of Texas at El Paso where he earned an M.A. degree in Creative Writing. He then spent a year at the University of Iowa as a PhD student in American Literature. A year later, he was awarded a Wallace E. Stegner fellowship. While at Stanford University under the guidance of Denise Levertov, he completed his first book of poems, Calendar of Dust, which won an American Book Award in 1992. He entered the Ph.D. program at Stanford and continued his studies for two more years. Before completing his Ph.D., he moved back to the border and began teaching at the University of Texas at El Paso in the bilingual MFA program.

His first novel, Carry Me Like Water was a saga that brought together the Victorian novel and the Latin American tradition of magic realism and received much critical attention.

In The Book of What Remains (Copper Canyon Press, 2010), his fifth book of poems, he writes to the core truth of life’s ever-shifting memories. Set along the Mexican border, the contrast between the desert’s austere beauty and the brutality of border politics mirrors humanity’s capacity for both generosity and cruelty.

In 2005, he curated a show of photographs by Julian Cardona.

He continues to teach in the Creative Writing Department at the University of Texas at El Paso.

The X Factor UK 2017 – Live Shows Week 3 Prize Fight – Kevin Davy White vs Lloyd Macey #XFactor

Both guys gave stunning performances and it’s all up to the viewers.

Personally, Kevin’s rendition of Fastlove, Pt. 1 is just beyond but you cannot deny the vocal prowess of Lloyd in A Different Corner.

The Prize Fight winner will open for Little Mix at Manchester Arena a week from now! How freaking cool is that???!!!

The X Factor UK 2017 – Third Week Live Show 6 Recap – Girls & Boys Categories #XFactor

It’s the second night of the third week of the live shows. I’m not sure if I liked the result this week but the people have spoken so there’s that.

Alisah Bonaobra – Praying For Time
She is getting better and better each week. This heartfelt performance is perhaps her best in the live shows.

Louis said she picked the right song by singing Praying for Time saying it was indeed her time. Nicole said her voice was limitless. Simon on the other hand find it old fashion. Her coach Sharon said she connected with the song lyrically but she haven’t had her moment.

Sam Black – I’m Your Man
With this performance and him being safe this week, I’m guesing that he’ll be the next to leave. This is how you murder a song. This is CRINGY in well, obviously all caps!

Sharon: It was a bit pitchy tonight
Nicole: Agreed with Mrs.O
Simon: You’re a very nice guy. In terms of originality, there was nothing.
Louis: He did his very best! (LOL)

Grace Davies – I Can’t Make You Love Me
I didn’t like her vocals here. The strain in her voice was rather highlighted.
Louis: You are a true artist. I believe every single word.

Nicole: It’s was beautiful.
Simon: I admired you tonight. It felt sincere.
Sharon: You picked yourself up and you focused, that’s why people loved you.

Rai-Elle Williams – They Won’t Go When I Go
This is my favorite performance from Rai-Elle so far. The rawness of her voice is so magical to hear.

She got a standing ovation from the three but Louis.
Louis: You got everything going for you.
Nicole: You took us to church tonight with that performance.
Simon: You really are taking this seriously. You got a great spirit about you.
Sharon: You chose this song. You are such a brave artist.

Lloyd Macey – A Different Corner
Vocals! Vocals! Powerful vocals! Dare I say he’s much better than Sam Smith!!!

Sharon: It was just wonderful! (and Mrs. O was bawling her eyes out!)
Nicole: You got me tonight. That was the performance of the night.
Simon: That is a really difficult song to sing. This is your best performance in the live show.
Louis: You are a very special person. He agreed with Nicole.

Holly Tandy – One More Try
She looks absolutely smashing as per usual. This was her strongest vocals so far.

Louis: It was your best vocal performance yet.
Nicole: You took on a massive song! Still can’t believe Holly is 16.
Simon: You gotta become 16 years old. The whole thing was old fashion.
Sharon: Your voice was spectacular and you looked like a goddess.

Eliminated: Alisah (she was in the bottom with Sam Black)

Champion of the night: Lloyd and it’s a well deserved one!

Mariel de Leon’s Reputation

After her comments against the appointment of Mocha Uson to a government post and even after she apologized for it, Mariel de Leon has been villainized by the Pro-Duterte and Pro-Mocha Uson netizens. It was brutal and relentless to say the least. They didn’t care that Mariel will be representing the Philippines in the international stage. They want her to fail. They want her to receive her bad “karma.” They want this “arrogant” beauty queen to get what they thought she deserves – a winning-less participation in the pageant.

Is Mariel really a villain?

She spoke up. It was her opinion. A political opinion that didn’t sit well with those who voted for the current President. They said it was in bad taste. They said a beauty queen shouldn’t be so tactless. Truth be told though, what Mariel said was the the opinion so many of us were afraid to voice out because we’re afraid of the same backlash that she’s receiving until now.

She could’ve worded her opinion differently they say but Filipinos are not stupid. Let’s not dumb down ourselves. Whether she said it differently or not, the meaning will still be the same. Same difference. Same Difference folks.

She is a beauty queen so she should act accordingly. Why put her in a box? She’s clearly an intelligent woman with her own thoughts. She stood her ground and continue to do so. Just how should a beauty queen act? Which standard should they follow? They’re not mere beauties whose job is to smile and look pretty. Why continue to crucify her?

Some were even outrageously calling Mariel the most hated beauty queen ever. I wonder if people remembered Imelda Schweighart last year when she disparagingly compared Duterte to Hitler and badmouthed her fellow delegates after her non-inclusion into the Top 16 of Miss Earth which eventually leads to her resignation. I’m not trying to resurrect an old issue but did Mariel’s ‘infraction’ was too much for these people to give their support? Or even if they are unable to give their support, can they at least stop spewing negative tirades towards her?

Winning back the crown for the second consecutive year is not unheard of; although it’s never happened in Miss International. A runner-up finish would still receive negative critiques from her haters. A win could diminish said critiques but it will still be mired with negativity.

Seriously my fellow kababayan – when will Mariel get her unnecessary vindication?

I am not affiliated with any political parties. I am not part of any beauty camps. I am not a fan of Mariel de Leon. I don’t hate her either. I am just a Filipino pageant fan. Mariel is doing her best to represent our country. For that alone, she has my support.

For me, she’s already ‘vindicated.’ For being a strong-willed woman who does not cowed to her haters, she already earned my respect.

No matter what happens in Japan tomorrow, she would still be my Miss International 2017.

Alisah Bonaobra is Eliminated from the X Factor! #XFactor

I’m still in shock. I just watched the rest of the performances tonight and I am still baffled why Alisah got the boot.

Louis said she picked the right song by singing Praying for Time saying it was indeed her time. Nicole said her voice was limitless. Simon on the other hand find it old fashion. Her coach Sharon said she connected with the song lyrically but she haven’t had her moment. Uhm, Sharon – that was her moment? Were you even listening Miss O?

Not hating on anyone but if this was really a singing contest, we all know that Alisah won’t be going home tonight. Alas, it’s a popularity singing contest at the end of the day so there’ll be no second chance, not another wildcard for Alisah.

Bye homegirl! ‘So proud of you!

Rachel Peters and Indonesia’s Bunga Jelitha are Miss Universe’ Roomies!

Yes! Our South East Asian neighbor 2017 Puteri Indonesia’s Bunga Jelitha will be Miss Universe Philippines Rachel Peters’ roommate for the whole duration of the 66th Miss Universe in Las Vegas. It was confirmed by Rachel herself through her Instagram story.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BbZIu_DA8lB/?tagged=rachelpeters

Indonesian beauty queens have stepped up their game these past few years by sending top-notch delegates to international beauty pageants especially in the Miss Universe pageant. They made the top 16 cut for the past four editions but have never made it past the Swimsuit round.

With Bunga Jelitha’s resume, it looks like Indonesia is ready to slay. Let’s see how well she and Rachel would get along during the pageant.

The X Factor UK 2017 – Third Week Live Show 5 Recap – Groups and Overs Categories #XFactor

It is the third week of the Live Shows and for the fifth live show, the Groups and the Overs categories battled it out with songs from the late great George Michael.

Rak-Su started the show with Faith. IMO, this was just an okay performance if not a bit pedestrian.

Nicole: She loved that they kept the integrity of the song.
Louis: Rak-Su make it look that easy
Sharon: Really enjoyed it. They Rak-Su’d it!
Simon: You made it your version. I think we are watching stars being born…

Kevin sang Fastlove, Pt. 1 and it’s record perfection! I mean, why is he in this contest? He should be touring the world already!!! He’s now my top act to win this season!

He go another standing ovation from all of the judges.
Simon thought it was Kevin’s MOMENT and the best performance of the night!
Louis love that Kevin’s into music and not in the fame game.
Sharon: Everything was perfect! (I agree with you there Ms. O)
Her mentor Nicole opined that it was the best performance he ever witnessed on the show! (Wow!)

Jack & Joel – Edge of Heaven
I thought it was fun. Not my favorite from them but it was fun!

Nicole: They sounded Whamazing!
Louis: You’re like a modern day Wham!
Sharon: They really suited the song.
Simon: Simon thought this was their best performance so far.

The Cutkelvins – Killer/Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone
Gosh! Their accents!!! They can easily go out there and release a record to be honest! I’m so glad they bounced back this week! Although I’m starting to hate the usual set-up they have production-wise.

They got a standing ovation from the judges.
Nicole thought they looked so great as a group together.
Louis said it was their best performance yet! (And I agree!)
Sharon said they slammed it!
Simon:Something clicked tonight for the group.

Sean and Conor Price – Freedom! ’90”
I absolutely loved these two! I don’t know if they’re still in my top 3 but I do know that they will go far after the show.

Another standing ovation from the judges.
Nicole: Conor reminds her of Justin Bieber.
Louis: They are Real!
Sharon loves their enthusiasm.
Simon: They’re very infectious with no gimmicks! Ask viewers to vote for them.

Matt Linnen sang Careless Whisper and what a song choice! OMFG! He’s so cute with his robotic movements yeah? He kind of reminds me of David Cook here. And girls, he is a DADDY!!!! Didn’t know this info until this week!

Only Simon and Nicole stood up for him.
Sharon: You did really well tonight but still feels his insecurity
Louis said it was his best vocals to date.
Simon: By far his best performance.
Nicole said she could tell how much this means to Matt and that he was singing for his boys.

The act who got the boot is/are…

And the obvious Champion of the night with the most public votes is Kevin Davy White!!!

Miss Universe Philippines 2017 Rachel Peters is Ready for Las Vegas!

Miss Universe Philippines 2017 Rachel Peters is all set to conquer the Universe as she donned a classy black ensemble during her airport send-off bound to Las Vegas, Nevada, USA where the 66th edition of the Miss Universe Pageant will be held.

Las Vegas is where our delegates seems to do well. Really well for that matter since this is where Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach won her crown,  where Janine Tugonon almost grabbed our third Miss Universe crown in 2012 and where Venus Raj started the renaissance for the Philippines in the international pageant arena.

And I’ve a good feeling that Rachel will bring her A-game and win that fourth crown for the Philippines! I’m fairly confident about it.
