My 2017 Recap in Beauty Pageants!

2017 has been an eventful year in the world of pageantry from the staging of the 65th Miss Universe pageant in Manila in January up to it’s homecoming in Las Vegas last November 26 and every minor and major pageants in between – it was whirlwind and almost chaotic for both pageant fans and pundits!

France took the Miss Universe crown ending its 63-year title drought.

In a sold-out Mall of Asia Arena in the Philippines, you could hear the crowd clamoring for Haiti’s Raquel Pélissier to succeed the DCI crown from the outgoing Miss Universe, the Philippines’ very own Pia Wurtzbach but Iris Mittenare of France was just too strong a competitor to be denied. It was a well-deserved win after an impressive showing during the prelimenaries and a flawless performance in the finals night. Iris was the rightful winner!

Rachel Peters Conquered the Binibini Stage!

Rachel Peters is one of the frontrunners during this year’s Binibining Pilipinas and she was faultless during the finals night leaving all of the contestants vying for the lesser crowns.

Miss Earth 2017 is the Philippines!

Philippines winning the crown three times in four years was mired with criticism of it being rigged but truth be told, in a world full of mere beauties – having the brains to boot is a novelty that will be rewarded, given the right time.

Venezuela’s Ninoska Vasquez overperformed.
Ninoska was touted to be one of the two strongest delegates for the crown. She was perfection all throughout the pre-pageant night activities but fel short with her stage-presence during the finals. Rather, she may have done it a bit too much that left the judges uncomfortable?

Fahsai underwelhmed.
Along with the Venezuelan beauty, Paweesuda Drouin of Thailand nicknamed as Fahsai was expected to be part of the elemental court but during the crucial Final 8 interview portion of the competition, she stumbled when she picked the hashtag Millenial possibly costing her the Miss Earth crown.

Karen Ibasco lorded over the heavy favorites!
The Philippines is almost always sending brainy girls in this pageant. That is the biggest asset of Karen Ibasco as the host nation as she set on reclaiming the crown back to our home turf.

She may not be the most conventionally beautiful girl in the bunch but the girl does eat mic for breakfast and only reads the dictionary. Hah! Kidding aside, Karen was untouchable after the final 8 interview.

The Muy Caliente performance of Teresita Marquez at the Reina Hispanoamericana!

It was the debut participation of the Philippines and sending Teresita Marquez was perhaps the wisest decision from the organizer of the Miss World Philippines under its new national director – Arnold Vegafria.

Terestita also known as WinWyn Marquez was unstoppable in Bolivia so it’s very easy to see why she won the pageant becoming the very first Asian to do so!

Manushi Chhillar snatched the sixth Miss World crown for India tying the title with the most wins along with Venezuela.

One word – Liminous!

Indonesia finally won their first major beauty pageant crown!

Kevin Lilliana was the main frontrunner from the get go of the compeition and it’s no wonder that she end up giving her country its first win in a major beauty competition!

The Worst Staging of Miss Universe in History!

Aside from its cheap pre-pageant activities and the horrendous preliminary competition, the 66th edition of the pageant was nothing to write home about. It’s probably the worst staging of the pageant that I could remember!

Was Davina Bennett Robbed?

After a stellar performance all throughout the night, Jamaica’s Davina Bennett who sported an afro was denied the crown, only winning third overall. Despite strong showing, it seems like the competition was already pre-determined to be all about Demi-Leigh Peters of South Africa.

I’m very much happy with the overall winners of each respective major pageants and I hope to see more competitive girls in 2018!

Thank You, Mariel de Leon! #MissInternational2017

Miss Philippines Mariel de Leon may have failed to advance into the Top 15, but I’m still hella proud of my homegirl!!! She was a class act during the whole Miss International competition!
ONE WORD: RESPECT

Mariel de Leon’s Reputation

After her comments against the appointment of Mocha Uson to a government post and even after she apologized for it, Mariel de Leon has been villainized by the Pro-Duterte and Pro-Mocha Uson netizens. It was brutal and relentless to say the least. They didn’t care that Mariel will be representing the Philippines in the international stage. They want her to fail. They want her to receive her bad “karma.” They want this “arrogant” beauty queen to get what they thought she deserves – a winning-less participation in the pageant.

Is Mariel really a villain?

She spoke up. It was her opinion. A political opinion that didn’t sit well with those who voted for the current President. They said it was in bad taste. They said a beauty queen shouldn’t be so tactless. Truth be told though, what Mariel said was the the opinion so many of us were afraid to voice out because we’re afraid of the same backlash that she’s receiving until now.

She could’ve worded her opinion differently they say but Filipinos are not stupid. Let’s not dumb down ourselves. Whether she said it differently or not, the meaning will still be the same. Same difference. Same Difference folks.

She is a beauty queen so she should act accordingly. Why put her in a box? She’s clearly an intelligent woman with her own thoughts. She stood her ground and continue to do so. Just how should a beauty queen act? Which standard should they follow? They’re not mere beauties whose job is to smile and look pretty. Why continue to crucify her?

Some were even outrageously calling Mariel the most hated beauty queen ever. I wonder if people remembered Imelda Schweighart last year when she disparagingly compared Duterte to Hitler and badmouthed her fellow delegates after her non-inclusion into the Top 16 of Miss Earth which eventually leads to her resignation. I’m not trying to resurrect an old issue but did Mariel’s ‘infraction’ was too much for these people to give their support? Or even if they are unable to give their support, can they at least stop spewing negative tirades towards her?

Winning back the crown for the second consecutive year is not unheard of; although it’s never happened in Miss International. A runner-up finish would still receive negative critiques from her haters. A win could diminish said critiques but it will still be mired with negativity.

Seriously my fellow kababayan – when will Mariel get her unnecessary vindication?

I am not affiliated with any political parties. I am not part of any beauty camps. I am not a fan of Mariel de Leon. I don’t hate her either. I am just a Filipino pageant fan. Mariel is doing her best to represent our country. For that alone, she has my support.

For me, she’s already ‘vindicated.’ For being a strong-willed woman who does not cowed to her haters, she already earned my respect.

No matter what happens in Japan tomorrow, she would still be my Miss International 2017.

Triple Send-Off for Rachel, Katarina and Chanel!

The remaining Binibining Pilipinas 2017 Queens who are about to compete in their respective international pageants were given their official send-off this afternoon at the Monet Ballroom of Novotel Manila-Araneta Center.

Miss Universe Philippines Rachel Peters is set to compete in Las Vegas on November 26 while Chanel Olive Thomas will be heading on the second of November in Poland. And finally but not definitely not the least, is Katarina Rodriguez who will be traveling to Colombo, Sri Lanka come December 21 in her quest to win the country’s first Miss Intercontinental title.

The said send-off was sort of a welcome party as well for Nelda Ibe who came in 2nd at the Miss Globe in Albania and Elizabeth Clenci who placed 2nd runner-up in Miss Grand International. Only Mariel de Leon is missing amongst the crowned Binibinis this year since she’s currently competing in Japan in the hopes of a back-to-back Miss International win!

Best of lucks girls!!! Mabuhay kayong lahat!

Pageant Schedule 2017 #TeamPilipinas2017

November is definitely the busiest month of the year for international pageant fans and pundits as this is when the four major pageants in the world namely Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International and Miss Earth will stage their annual competition. Then there’s the bevy of minor pageants that will cap off the year in pageantry.

Mariel De Leon’s Uphill Battle Towards the Miss International 2017 Crown!

It looks like Mariel De Leon’s road to the Mikimoto crown is going to be a tough one not only because of the beautiful contestants she will be competing against with but also because of the divisiveness of Filipino pageant fans as a result of the controversy earlier this year where she criticized the appointment of Mocha Uson as Assistant Secretary of the Presidential Communications Operations Office.

Since the incident, Mariel has disabled her comments on Social Media, most prominently on her Instagram account to avoid the troll netizens.

I, for one believe that we should support Mariel on her quest because at the end of the day, she’s representing our flag. Besides, she already apologized which I thought was very much unnecessary to start with. Divisiveness on politics is always present but when it comes to our country as a whole, I’d love to say one day that I was proud of supporting our own.

Manny Pacquiao is a bigot but I was proud of what he accomplished in boxing and every single time he steps in the ring. Why can’t we do the same for Mariel? What would it take for you to support our home girl?

Anyway, let’s just hope that all these negative criticisms and lack of support will fuel Mariel’s spirit to give her 101% best in the Miss International competition.
