Book Review: The Enlightenment of Daniel – Eli Easton

The Enlightenment Of Daniel[Book 2 of Sex in Seattle Series]

There’s something really beautiful about a book that makes you root for its main characters with intensity. The Enlightenment of Daniel is about family, unrequited love, finding the real you and finding real happiness.

When Daniel Derenzo’s dying father reminded him how short life is, he found himself reevaluating his life that led to a startling revelation that he is actually attracted to his business partner and best friend Nick Ross.  Daniel does not leave anything to chances. He’s shrewd and meticulous planning everything up to the smallest details leading him to consult the experts at the Expanded Horizons sex clinic.

Nick Ross on the other hand has been pining for Daniel since their college days but since Daniel was straight, he’s got no choice but to move on and marry Marcia instead. Now with two kids and a troubled marriage, Nick find himself on the verge of filing a divorce but for fear that by doing so – he’ll never get joint custody.

Then something happened with Daniel that made Nick hope that there must be something in there that may just be what his kids and his heart needed.

I’m really not into characters with kids but sometimes, their characterization in the story makes it all okay to be in the mix between the MCs. Of course it would have to depend on how the author writes it. Nick’s kids are just realistic, fun and are kids of a couple with rocky relationship. I loved the sweet innocence of eight year old Sylvan and the angst and insecurity of Jenny. Even Nick’s wife Marcia’s character was portrayed in a way that you’d feel for her but of course, you’d also want to stab her eyes with a pitchfork.

And we’ve got Daniel. He’s definitely got fierce control of most situations but he doesn’t come off as controlling. I loved that his inner monologue was quite funny. If you’d look beyond, he’s actually a funny guy. I loved how he’s so determine to take Marcia down. He’s one sweet endearing character! Nick character meanwhile was so mellow and a wee-bit weak in my opinion but I respect his decision at the end of not hurting his wife in the process. I didn’t like that Marcia got out so easily but well, what can I do? It’s all about their kids after all.

The ending was just a dream. It’s a sweet dream that left me smiling from ear to ear. I’m glad that Daniel finally found his true self and his happiness with Nick. This is another great story from Eli Easton and I’m just floored – she’s really, really good.

Book Review: The Trouble With Tony – Eli Easton

The Trouble With Tony[Book 1 of Sex in Seattle Series]

I totally enjoyed reading this book. After reading two good books by Eli Easton over the holidays, this didn’t come as a surprise.

Seattle P.I. Tony DeMarco is out to solve a murder case of a young woman when he poses as a patient in a Seattle sex clinic where the victim was getting therapy from hot ex-army doctor Dr. Jack Halloran. Upon their first meeting, Tony couldn’t help his attraction and easily figured that the doctor was innocent. But first, he’s got to prove Jack’s innocence before pursuing their seemingly mutual attraction.

I loved how fast paced the story was and how utterly adorable Tony is. I loved when an author does not find the need to resort to a lot of drama to conclude a seemingly complicated plot. It’s always nice when they know how to weave the story well into the development of each character. Here, Eli Easton has proven once again her ability to create loveable characters with a story that easily captivates its readers.

Book Review: Gabriel’s Fall – Sandrine Gasq-Dion

Gabriel's FallGabriel’s Fall is a short story preceded by Second Time Around but can be read as a standalone. This story is about the ultimate sacrifice for love. I read this after reading Second Time Around featuring the character of Maverick and Ronin – try reading their story first before this one to easily recognize the secondary characters and the whole feel of the accompanying story.

This time though, angel Gabriel [not THAT Gabriel ^_^] found himself falling for his charge Luke. [Gabriel was the twink angel] in Second Time Around. It was a beautiful story that speaks volume about true love.

I dunno why I’m so into “angels” story now but I just loved me some HEA with these heavenly creatures. It’s  sure gonna be a happy ending after all right? Once again, Sandrine-Gasq-Dion weaved a beautiful novella that perfectly resonates with the whole feel of the, shall I say series or accompanying books? Either way, this one totally made me smile all throughout.

Book Review: Second Time Around – Sandrine Gasq-Dion

Second Time AroundIt’s always nice reading a feel good story that leaves you smiling from ear to ear long after turning its last page. Second Time Around is a short story that tells the story of love lost and love found.

Ronin Eastland lost his partner of 12 years in a drunken driving accident. Truly heartbroken and devastated, he found himself slowly deteriorating determined to follow the love of his life.

Marverick Holliday wasn’t supposed to die just yet – he still got a whole life to spend with Ronin. The twink looking angel told him that he could go back to Ronin but he won’t remember who he was in previous life.

And there’s Maverick Cruise, an ER doctor who winds up treating Ronin Eastand. For some reason, Maverick instantly felt drawn to the handsome widower.

Will they ever reunite again? Is their love strong enough to recognize each other?

Interesting plot yeah? I mean, yes it’s totally cliché and so chick-litish but c’mon – you gotta love a well-written romantic fantasy every now and then. I know I do. It’s a short read but is very satisfying. I loved the whole soulmate thingy and the heaven / angel’s angle was pretty nice. The twink angel was pretty funny though. Sandrine Gasq-Dion is one fine story-teller and if you’re in the mood for some good reading – this one’s definitely for you.

Book Review: Tattoos & Teacups – Anna Martin

Tattoos & TeacupsI loved the simplicity of this story. Both MC’s characterizations are utterly realistic and the story from the get-go just flowed easily with an endearing conclusion.

Robert McKinnon left his native Scotland to move to America when he was a teenager. Sixteen years later, Robert who is now a college professor still hasn’t settled physically and emotionally. His routine went berserk when Chris Ford came into his life. Covered with tattoos and full of exuberance, the young musician put some colors into Robert’s rather bleak existence. Even though he’s not expecting to find an emotional connection with someone a decade younger than him, Robert find himself easily drawn to Chris. This connection may very well be what he’s been looking for so long – a burst of life and love.

When I read this the first time, I didn’t really get Robert’s drift. I thought his narration was rather painfully dragging the story down. But then I read the second half of it and fell in love with both characters. It was an easy relationship for them and both are truly charming. I decided to reread it from the start and I decided that the tone of the book was intentionally slow. It gave the book a stronger emotional impact and I really do appreciate how each character [the couple along with the secondary characters] took a spotlight of their own in the process. I don’t what’s with this book that made me reread it right away and fell for Robert and Chris. They have this magnetic chemistry in them and they’re just so easy to like! I think that’s what’s so good about a romance book – you get to appreciate both couple even through their imperfections. There’s an emotional connection between them and the readers and I liked that in my books. It made me feel that somewhere, somehow – someone like them actually exists. Tattoos & Teacups is one book I’d always keep rereading to feel good about myself whenever I feel melancholic about life.

Book Review: Tigerland (Tigers and Devils, #2) – Sean Kennedy

Tigerland[Book 2 of Tigers and  Devils]

Over three years after coming out of the closet, football god Declan Tyler is now working as a commentator after injuring himself when he left the Devils and went back to play in Melbourne and be with Simon. Simon now works as a producer in a community TV program and they are now comfortably living together. Things are going smoothly for them until Declan’s ex-beau who’s also a football player decided to come out in the closet just before retirement and drag him and Simon into the spectacle.

This was a great follow-up to Simon and Dec’s story. The story was a trying time for the couple and it shows the domestic part of their relationship. I loved that about this couple. It was still surreal in a good way and it’s beautiful to watch them grown into the relationship.

At some point in the book, I’d really like to hit Grey Heyward [Declan’s ex] – Gosh, he’s just a relentless sod. I can’t believe he could be that low. I didn’t even like that it all came out easy for him until the end. I was hoping that he’ll self-destruct until the end but alas – the author went the “right” way. He should’ve given us a little fantasy and have that prick run over by a pick-up truck or a train or something.

So like what I’ve said – the couple had this massive thorn thrown into their relationship but they stayed resilient through it all. It was true love people! The development of the story was still great – Sean Kennedy was able to maintain the charm of all the characters except for the evil ones, of course.

I sure hoped that this isn’t the last installment for our couple. I would’ve liked to see Dec being the green-eyed monster in this book but I guess it was too much to ask with Heyward getting all the press here. I’d really like Simon’s ex’s to haunt Dec in the coming installment – let’s just hope there’ll be one. As expected, Sean Kennedy delivered a superb sequel which I am so thankful because I came to really love Simon and Declan – that easily! People, go buy your copy of this series now!!!

Book Review: Tigers and Devils (Tigers and Devils #1) – Sean Kennedy

Tigers & Devils[Book 1 of Tigers & Devils Series ]

I’ve been meaning to read this book sooner but I never got the chance to do so until the early week of December. It actually took me almost a year to finally get a hold of this one – I remember earlier this year when I first got this along with the Cut & Run series and I decided to go ahead with Abigail Roux and Madeleine Urban and I never turned back after that. Now, since I’m on a break from the Cut & Run universe and have read tons of books in between then and now – plus my penchant for books set Down Under (big thanks to the Red Dirt Heart series and to the mouthy Mark Cooper via Mark Cooper vs America – or it simply must be the accent!) I finally decided to give this one a go. And folks, let me tell you loud and clear – the author just totally smash it for me!  Mind you, this was his first novel!!

It introduces us to Simon Murray, a single gay man who manages a film festival and is cynical about life in general and to the football god Declan Tyler who’s also very much in the closet as they foray into a secret relationship that neither of them, their family and friends to come through.

What I really loved about the book was the immediate chemistry between Simon and Declan. Simon’s cynicism and dry humor very well complements Declan’s personality. I loved how they are very much protective of each other even earlier in the stage of their relationship. Roger’s character [Simon’s best friend] kind of irked me though; he was a bit clingy and whiny. I didn’t especially liked the way he acted towards Dec at their first proper meeting but I kind of got his point about him [Dec] dragging Simon back into the closet but still, it was a mutual decision and I feel like kicking the prick out of him.

The outing of Dec was especially scandalous but I loved how the author weaved that part of the story. It was very realistic and I’m so glad that Dec isn’t much of a dick about it. The whole debacle about Simon doing a Yoko Ono on Declan was unfair to say the least but it was the realistic reaction of mindless pricks so it’s perfect in a sense.

I guess the most charming part of the story comes from how Simon sees Dec and vice versa. At first, it was like Notting Hill of some sort and as the story progresses, It became apparent that it’s more of a search for companionship, on that one person who you can trust your life with wholeheartedly and Dec saw that in Simon. It’s truly a beautiful story with inspiring, charming characters to boot – highly recommended and a must-read.

Book Review: Kieran & Drew – L.A. Gilbert

“Sometimes you do stay with your first love”

Keiran And DrewKieran & Drew reminds me so much of J.H. Trumble’s angst-filled coming of age debut novel Don’t Let Me Go and Madison Parker’s debut Play Me I’m Yours. There’s the usual high school scenes where the weird, gay, geeky kid is singled out and gets bullied by the self-centered, idiotic jocks – typical but true. It’s the case with Kieran Appleby who cannot wait to escape his small hometown of Keys and who’s only friend is the school janitor who doesn’t speak much.

Meanwhile, Drew Anderson is the “nice” jock. He’s got an agoraphobic mother to take care of after his father took off. And naturally, he’s still in the closet just to avoid all the hassling. When he discovered Kieran’s long time crush, they started to experiment which led them to discovering sex, intimacy and ultimately love. With Kieran’s plan on escaping Keys and Drew’s obligation to take care of his sick mom – things couldn’t be any easier for them to meet in the middle.

When I started reading this I honestly find it a bit slow and it felt repetitive. Midway through the story, it picked up the pace and was glad that there’s more dialogue between Kieran and Drew. That thing about Kieran’s Dad was almost predictable by the way. [You’d know what I mean once you read this novel]. I would’ve liked for Drew’s Uncle to be present and provide the fatherly figure for him though. It was too crushing for an eighteen year old to be an adult at such a young age. I feel that Drew’s character wasn’t entirely examined here. There wasn’t enough exposure and everything’s so gloomy about him. I was glad that it worked out at the end and the author didn’t see the need to add more “high school jock-bullying” scenes. I was glad that for the rest of the last part of the book, it just revolves around Kieran and Drew. This is another beautiful narration from L.A. Gilbert – it was totally different from The Coil and The Ghost On My Couch in terms of writing style which I think is very unique and I loved that about the author. Please do read this people; it’s a pretty good book.
