This is a book I wouldn’t mind losing sleep over. Hell Or High Water is the first book from the THIRDS series released this year from author Charlie Cochet and I’ve one word for it – PERFECTION.
With raving reviews and high ratings from here to virtually every book blogs, I wasn’t surprised that it easily made me into a Dex-Sloane biggest fan. Haha. The book has this fresh vibe with a whole new take on the “shifter” universe that will easily lure regular m/m genre readers into this wonderful world where humans and therians (shifters which does not include magic at all – hah!) coexists.
“When homicide detective Dexter J. Daley’s testimony helps send his partner away for murder, the consequences—and the media frenzy—aren’t far behind. He soon finds himself sans boyfriend, sans friends, and, after an unpleasant encounter in a parking garage after the trial, he’s lucky he doesn’t find himself sans teeth. Dex fears he’ll get transferred from the Human Police Force’s Sixth Precinct, or worse, get dismissed. Instead, his adoptive father—a sergeant at the Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron otherwise known as the THIRDS—pulls a few strings, and Dex gets recruited as a Defense Agent.
Dex is determined to get his life back on track and eager to get started in his new job. But his first meeting with Team Leader Sloane Brodie, who also happens to be his new jaguar Therian partner, turns disastrous. When the team is called to investigate the murders of three HumaniTherian activists, it soon becomes clear to Dex that getting his partner and the rest of the tightknit team to accept him will be a lot harder than catching the killer—and every bit as dangerous.” Via Goodreads
I loved how the author built Dexter Daley’s character from a rather passive do-gooder detective to an uberly adorable, perky, 80’s music loving sexy dork the moment he entered the THIRDS facilities. Dex’s character was such a joy to read. [Yep, I think I’m in love] LOL.
With regards to his partner, the stoic Sloane Brodie is well – hotness overload but I gotta say, the guy’s a douchebag especially with Dex. I know, I know- he’s got some issues and all but I still think he’s a tool. Poor baby Dex competing with a ghost. Oops!!… Hell, okay no more spoiler.
Regardless of Sloane’s douchebaggery, I still love him with Dex and their silly banter. They are indeed a strong couple in the throe of coupledom in the MM genre. I’m pretty sure those who enjoyed Tyler and Zane [Cut & Run series] would get a kick out of this book. It is full of action, crazy ass characters and romance that will tickle you to the bone and a genius of a storyline that will keep you wanting for more. This is definitely the book you should read next. As in pronto!!
