Book Review: Starting Point (Turning Point #3) – N.R. Walker

Starting PointBLURB: Matthew Elliott is a recovering man. As an ex-cop and ex-fighter, his new job teaching kids at the local community gym about drug awareness and self-defence, is a little bit of both. His new focus on helping street kids is helping him heal, and with Kira by his side, he’s making strides.

Brother and sister, Rueben and Claudia, are homeless kids and they’re very much alone. As they strike a chord with Matt, he does everything in his power to help them.

But when Ruby and Claude need more help than he bargained for, it stops being about work, and starts being about home.

The day he met Kira, Matt’s life changed direction, and it’s only now he realises that everything he’s been through was a lead up to this. It was never about endings. His life, his purpose, was just beginning.

***

I really thought that after the disappointing second installment, the third book will be able to pick it up but oh lawd! No! It spiraled down even deeper. Like it “cannot be saved deep,” “Like what the hell happened deep?”

After finally reaching his breaking point, all Matthew Elliot can do now is to start over. And when I said start over – he decided to become Superman trying to save everyone. I think he was punched really hard in the second book and something happened with him psychologically. I don’t even know this new Matt. I’m not sure if he’s downright annoying or just too much everything.

I’m so glad that Kira somehow stayed in character but I really thought that he’s way better with someone else. That’s just for me though. I’d stop now because I’ve nothing more good to say about this third book. This was a fluke for sure at least for me. It’s just…tsk tk tsk.

Book Review: Breaking Point (Turning Point #2) – N.R. Walker

Breaking PointBLURB: As guilt plagues him, Matthew Elliott’s world begins to spiral out of control. The harder he holds on, the more it slips through his fingers, and he’s helpless to stop it.

Entering into the underground cage-fighting scene, he starts out fighting for what’s right. The deeper he gets, the more guilt consumes him – the more pain he takes for his penance, and he’s soon fighting for more than justice.

***

Honestly, this one didn’t work for me. It’s just too much and too angsty for me. There was also a bit of an inconsistency here about Matt’s character which if you’d read from the first book – you’d easily get it.

In this installment, Matt decided to “quit” the force and enters an underground cage-fighting scene. This was surprise! Surprise! An undercover job which he kept from Kira in “order to protect him”  – really man?!

You see, Matt’s still guilty for what happened to Kira in the first book and so he added more weight into his guilt by lying to Kira this time. Baloney!

I feel like this series lost its way from promising to less than enticing. Matt became unbearably annoying and all the talks about guilt, guilt and guilt were a bit unnerving. I really didn’t enjoy it as much as I’d like to. I only liked Kira here and thought that he should’ve let Matt grovel more and not gave in that easily. This series is definitely not one of my favorites from N.R. Walker.

Book Review: Point of No Return (Turning Point #1) – N.R. Walker

Point Of No ReturnBLURB: Matthew Elliot is one of LA’s best detectives—a smart, tough, closeted gay man. When he falls for his gym instructor Kira Takeo Franco, it’s not his colleagues he should be worried about finding out…it’s the bad guys.

Matthew Elliot is one of LA’s best detectives. He’s been labelled the golden boy of the Fab Four: a team of four detectives who’ve closed down drug-rings all over the city. He’s smart, tough and exceptionally good at his job.

He’s also a closeted gay man.

Enter Kira Takeo Franco, the new boxing coach at the gym. Matthew can’t deny his immediate attraction to the man his fellow cops know as Frankie. But in allowing himself to fall in love with a man known to his colleagues, Matthew risks outing them both.

Matt and Kira work to keep their relationship and private lives hidden from Matt’s very public life, fearing it would be detrimental to their careers.

But it’s not the other cops who Matthew should be worried about finding out his deepest, darkest secret…it’s the bad guys.

All I can say is that I enjoyed reading this first book and back when I read this December of last year [2014], I was rather please to find out that this was actually only the first book in the series of three. Matt and Kira have amazing chemistry and the insta-love between them was amazing. The sex scenes were great although I honestly didn’t expect Matt’s preference in bed. The kidnapping was a great conflict which made it easy for Matt to come out and finds out who really his friends are. It’s a well written first book! Not as exciting or as the author’s other series but it’s still very enjoyable.

Book Review: Red Dirt Heart 4 – N.R. Walker

Red Dirt Heart 4[Book 4 of the Red Dirt Heart Series]

I can’t even begin to describe the happiness I’ve felt after reading this final installment of the Red Dirt Heart series – happy and sad at the same time. This wonderful couple has really grown on me and the series is definitely one of my favorites ever!

Told from Travis Craig’s point of view this time, it feels like we see more of the hard-headed but with a softie-wombat heart Charlie Sutton and how their relationship developed over the years. It was beautiful how Travis’s world has changed since he arrived at the Sutton Station. They are still and will forever be in love and are thinking of marriage and setting up a family of their own.

“Mr Craig, Mrs Craig, I know we’ve never met, and I promise we will so I can ask this in person but if it’s okay with you, I’d really like to spend the rest of my life with your son”

Charlie’s oh-so-adorable-shy demeanor always gets me. Like Travis, I keep on falling more and more in love with him. Without question, Charlie Sutton is the heart of the series and Travis is the blood supplying its life support.

“I want this place to keep going, Trav. I don’t want it to get sold out to some huge corporation. I want the person who owns it to love it. They need to love it like we do, Trav.”

Having a family of their own was always a touchy subject for Charlie because he’s terrified that he may not be a good Dad at all. Naturally, Travis has shown him the light! LOL. Really, Charlie’s the champion in the Olympics of stubbornness but Travis was his coach – always so patient and so understanding.

“I got a uncle who’s in love with his cat. There was rumours that he…well, you know, did the nasty with it.”

Charlie bristled. “Being gay is not the same as having sex with a cat!”

“Well,” Amos deadpanned. “It was a male cat.”

It’s also nice to see how the Sutton Station keeps on growing. There was a heartbreaking moment when “someone” has to leave but with Travis in there and everyone’s support, Charlie made it. It’s nice that Charlie’s surrounded by people who loved him. The guy who thought he doesn’t deserve such is surrounded by heaps of loved ones who will always be there for him and vice versa.

“You’re gonna be the foreigner this time, Charlie. Not me. We play the right kind of football, we have baseball bats, not those stupid flat-edged cricket bats, and we drive on the right side of the street.”

Charlie in Texas was a sight to see! Travis made it a point that no matter what the reaction of his family towards him (really, Charlie doesn’t need to fret one bit) – there’s no doubt that he will be where Charlie is. Of course, Charlie being Charlie made himself sick worried about finally meeting the “in-laws.”

“That any kid of ours gets to have you as a dad too,” he said with a smile. “And that’s gonna be pretty damn awesome to see.”

After so much thought and procrastination, Charlie finally relented. Travis wanted it and so does Charlie (deep inside). It’s just about the sweetest thing ever when they finally decided to DO it. I swear, this couple makes me cry bucket of happiness.

“I’m not just marrying you, Charlie,” I said quietly. “I’m marrying this land as well, because you are as much a part of this place as it is of you. You have a love as infinite as the horizon, and a heart of red dirt. And I would be honoured”- I put my hand to my heart – “truly honoured, to marry you.”

N.R. Walker has obviously perfected writing these awfully-romantic scenes. I’m like soaked in a goo-fest and I loved it!

When I was just nine pages away from the end, I’m almost choking up. I feel like saying goodbye to two of my favorite friends and a whole lot of family members I came to love. Charlie Sutton and Travis Craig will always be one of my favorite couples and this book easily cemented itself as one of the best series out there in any genre and probably N.R. Walker’s best work to date.

Book Review: Taxes and TARDIS – N.R. Walker

Taxes And TARDISAnother beautiful, sexy and adorable story from N.R. Walker!

Seriously, N.R. Walker knows how to tug them hearts from readers.

Logan is an accountant. Geek. Lanky. Pale. Adorable

Brent is an electrician. Former Jock. Broad. Tanned. Sexy

Brent needs someone to fix his taxes. Upon meeting the geek accountant, like a big bad bazooka – Brent was struck speechless unable to form any coherent words in front of Logan. And who would’ve thought that they’ll hit it off big time? Will their differences cause some problems in their budding romance?

Again, I’m just totally in awe with N.R. Walker’s writing style. She make it seemed so easy to write beautiful stories with her beautiful characters with unique individualities. Here, both MCs are just disgustingly adorable!!! I just loved them! The easy-breezy chemistry between them was just electrifying! I loved that there was enough backstory for both Brent and Logan without those backstory dragging the development of their relationship. It was just smooth despite the angst. Sometimes, it’s nice to read stories that don’t require too much thinking. Like, you just have to read it as it is and enjoy it! Taxes and TARDIS is definitely a total must-read!

Book Review: Thomas Elkin – Sense Of Place – N.R. Walker

Sense of Place[Book 3 of the Thomas Elkin series]

Getting the support of their families, Tom and Cooper are at their happiest. They now lived together and nothing will get in their way. But outside influences are trying to tear them apart. Cooper is currently working for a man his age and thinks that he should be dating someone like him and Tom’s facing discrimination at work from a fellow senior partner. These forces won’t easily win though, because Tom and Cooper know that they have something much stronger and they are the real deal.

It’s really nice to see more of Tom and Cooper’s interaction at their respective offices. I loved that Cooper does not get easily swayed. He’s really a stubborn one, isn’t he? It’s funny how he still gets whatever he wants from Tom and how the latter loves spoiling him! I can’t help but grin from ear to ear when Cooper was putting words in Tom’s mouth about marriage. He’s hilarious and I loved how Tom easily relents with this super funny and vibrant young man! It’s also very sweet how Tom lets him fly – I mean, the way he seems to mentor Cooper because he really believed in him. What a really sweet guy.

I really loved this series and although this seemed to be the conclusion of the it, I really still want more of Tom and Cooper. Why is N.R. Walker so freaking amazing? Like seriously? Sixty Five Hours, Heatstroke, Red Dirt Heart, Three’s Company… Gosh, I simply cannot wait to read the next series from her!

A VERY WORTH YOUR WHILE SERIES, this one is.

Book Review: Thomas Elkin – Clarity Of Lines – N.R. Walker

Clarity of Lines[Book 2 of the Thomas Elkin series]

Forty-four year old Tom and twenty-two year old Cooper are very much together now. They decided to give their relationship a shot and would now like to share the news with their respective families. They thought their age gap won’t be that big of an issue but their loved ones seemed to think otherwise.

Now, this second installment is where everything hit the fan. Meeting the parents (technically, Tom have already met Cooper’s parents when the latter was still in high school) and telling them about their budding relationship. It was actually rather sweet how Tom and Cooper’s relationship developed in this installment. I loved how they each maintained their individuality without trying to change each other. I thought it was really sweet of Cooper whenever he’s defending his relationship with Tom. It’s true that it’s always the older one who seems to be getting all the blame yeah? Because he’s older and all – but sometimes, that is not always right. Of course, they cannot help the reaction of their respective families but I was sure glad that the story continues to keep its pacing without rushing anything about their relationship. It was really funny how Cooper always gets his way and Tom never wins an argument – funny, cute and very sweet if you think about it. I am totally in love with this series that just got better with this second installment. It’s truly a MUST-READ. Another great series from N.R. Walker.

Book Review: Thomas Elkin – Elements Of Retrofit – N.R. Walker

Elements of Retrofit[Book 1 of the Thomas Elkin series]

I am actually a sucker for May-December love stories and this one is probably one of the best series out there involving such affair and I just adored the couple here. Thomas Elkin is a successful New York architect who came out as a gay man before his fortieth birthday thus ending his almost twenty-year marriage. At forty-four, he’s as free to live his life the way he wanted especially now that his relationship with his son is back on track. Then came Cooper Jones, one of his new intern and an aspiring superstar in the world of architecture – also a friend of his son and is half his age. Their mutual attraction was palpable and Tom’s world is about to go upside down as Cooper shows him the life he’s been missing.

I do not have many issues about the MCs’ age gap here – I mean, I probably go awry if it’s more than 30 years gap because that’d just be weird – (that’s just for me though) but this one I find slightly awkward at first because Cooper actually went to school with Tom’s son, like they went to school together in High School and Tom’s actually older than Cooper’s Dad (like a month-older) but setting those aside, everything’s good with me.

I loved Cooper’s sassy attitude. He’s clearly very mature for his age and I think he balanced out Tom very well. I loved how Tom was trying to really gauge Cooper first before diving into the affair. After all, Cooper’s still very young and may very well have a change of heart. The good thing though is that Cooper attitude towards Tom and the way Tom reciprocates with Cooper was almost like a perfect semblance of how such affair should be handled. Even if clearly, Tom have made a lot (financially and built his reputation in the industry) – there was no barrier or distance that conflicted their budding relationship. This first book of the series was clearly very much focused on the merging of two generations and how both of them very well complimented each other. The issue about age was there and will always be there but I’m glad how their relationship seemed to be a lot stronger than this one factor. It’s a beautiful start of a series and I am so excited to read its second book.

Book Review: Red Dirt Heart Book 3 – N.R. Walker

23155382This third book is the ultimate Guide on How Not to Drool and Swoon Too Much over Charlie Suttona really, really terrible guide!  O_o

This was just the perfect follow up to the love story of Charlie & Travis! Now that Travis is a permanent fixture at the Sutton Station, everything seems to go perfectly for Charlie as long as he has Travis.

Until Travis had to leave the Station.

Swamped by lot of other stuff, Charlie realized that he’s got to man up at some point even without Travis by his side. Though his heart was totally breaking into pieces…

This is just perfection in every level. Here, we get to see Charlie at his most vulnerable state. His growing and glowing love for Travis was just beyond – it’s so beautiful that it almost hurt. I loved how Charlie now tries to communicate more and be open about his sexuality. I love the development of their relationship and how that affects the people around them.

At the end of the second book, Travis found a baby wombat and I didn’t really care about it until I read this book. I got curious and googled “baby wombat” and it looks like a fat rat mixed with a tiny itty baby bear. So this is what Charlie’s Nugget looks like! It was totally cute how he’s so taken with Nugget which shows more of Charlie’s nurturing nature – so that is not an exclusive Travis trait yeah?

It’s really beautiful how Charlie has changed so much over the course of the series. It’s just a year since he and Travis have been together [in this book] but it feels like it’s been forever! I just totally adored how this series turned out to be so good that it makes you greedy and read more and more about Charlie, Travis and the folks of Sutton Station! Yep, new fan here!

Book Review: Red Dirt Heart Book 2 – N.R. Walker

22957237“All I could feel was the pulse of our heartbeats where we joined, throbbing and pounding through every fibre in my body. We rocked back and forth, always kissing. And on the cold, cold ground by the flickering warmth of the fire, we made love. The way he held me, the way he looked at me, it was the closest to heaven I’d ever get without dyin’. “

Now this one I liked very much. When American agronomist Travis Craig arrived in Sutton Station, he never expected to find love through its young owner Charlie Sutton. Six month into their relationship, both men are still trying to figure things out. Travis being the relaxed and the outspoken one feels like Charlie keeps on pushing him away unknowingly. But when Travis was asked to leave the country, Charlie’s stubbornness seemed to skyrocket which also landed into a desperate hope of making the love of his life stay more than anything else – whatever it takes.

I really did enjoy this one immensely. Here, I get to appreciate more of the book’s secondary characters. I loved the way Travis is pushing Charlie to doing things that he normally won’t do and I loved how Charlie allows Travis to push him into doing ‘em. It was a symbiotic relationship between them. The development in their relationship was beautiful – I loved the flowy storytelling through Charlie’s perspective. His character is such a worryrat but you can really relate to him. I think that’s what’s beautiful about this couple. They’re so easy to love and so easy to relate to.

Oh, and I loved the way Charlie came out! That was an epic coming out! I was like cheering internally for him! Yay! Go Charlie! And that interview with the immigration – I cried for the first time reading this series. That was like the best scene ever in this book aside from Charlie coming out at the meeting.

This is definitely a great follow up from the first book and I cannot wait to read the next one. Charlie, Travis and the red dirt of Sutton Station has definitely grown into me. This is a total MUST-READ.
