Review: Blind Faith ( Blind Faith, #1) – N.R. Walker

Blind FaithBlurb from Goodreads

Starting a new job in a new town, veterinarian Carter Reece makes a house call to a very special client.

Arrogant, moody and totally gorgeous, Isaac Brannigan has been blind since he was eight. After the death of his guide dog and best friend, Rosie, his partnership with his new guide dog, Brady, isn’t going well.

Carter tries to help both man and canine through this initiation phase, but just who is leading who?

This book just made my day! Isaac and Carter are just perfect for each other. I loved how patient Carter is with Isaac even though Isaac tends to always make an ass of himself. I loved that it took time for their relationship to really come into fruition. It wasn’t easy but it was sweet and lovely how they overcome Isaac’s blindness. To begin with, it was not an issue at all for Carter. And I just adore Hannah to death! She sacrificed so much for Isaac and she just deserved a break and thank gawd for Carter. I also loved Brady – sweet dog! And Mark –hah! What a real nice friend to have! A classic N.R. Walker. Just fantastic!

That Awkward Moment When Miss Universe 2015 Host Announces The Wrong Winner!

Pia

Did that just really happened on TV? Steve Harvey just made the biggest hosting blunder on worldwide television when he announces the wrong winner of the Miss Universe crown just moments ago proclaiming Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez as the new winner, only she’s not.  Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach was beyond herself when Harvey proclaimed her the actual winner! Pia ended the 42-year Miss Universe drought of the Philippines and continued the Miss Universe placement of the country since 2010. (And what’s even more awkward is when Paulina had to take the crown, bouquet and the sash off Miss Colombia!!!)

Congratulations Pia!  That’s going to be way more awkward backstage I’m sure.

Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach reacts in disbelief!

Book Review: Death’s Ink-Black Shadow – John Wiltshire

DeathI loved the first five books of this series and will continue to regard it as one of the best-written series I’ve read from the first to its fifth book. It took me a couple of months before finally getting a go at this one and I’ve to say that unlike the prior installments, it hasn’t been a pleasant experience reading this. I’m just not into it as much as the earlier books and I was just saddened that my love affair with this series screeched into a halt and ended just like that. And what a coincidence with its title and all. Patay tayo diyan.

I’ve a lot of issues about this installment but I will just try to enumerate the ones that totally turned me off.

  1. The revenge fuck. Ack. Seriously Ben? Remember when “you broke Nik’s spirit?” I was like, this guy’s fucking unbelievable! Even if the fucking didn’t actually happen, the intent was there and it just lessen my appreciation for Ben’s character more and more. Uhm, yeah – it’s like, been there done that and Ben still think that Nik is capable of “really” cheating  on him – Uhm. No Ben. Not cool at all.
  2. The predictable arrival of Nik’s son. ‘Have seen it from a far.
  3. Tim and “the Moron” should be on the kill list next. Their characters are charming earlier in the series but they’ve just become a couple of nuisances.
  4. Ben trying to give more credit to Kate for Molly Rose’s sake. Ugh. I’ve enough of Kate! She’s a scheming bitch and she’s dead but she’s still lurking around causing discomfort. *shuddered*
  5. Speaking of Molly Rose. I can’t get past her character TBH. She’s like one of the main reasons I have to stop reading this series. *sigh*

I know that I will still be waiting for John Wiltshire’s stand-alone books / new series to come but I think I’m done with Nik and Ben at this point. I hate that I got so invested with these two only to leave them hanging midway through the series. I’m sad that it had to end this way but I know that I will still be supporting John Wiltshire’s other titles because the man ‘s got style. This may not work for me but I’m pretty sure a lot of people will still appreciate it.  So there. Ranting / review finished.

Paalam Ben and Nik. It was a pleasure getting to know you…

Book Review: Cronin’s Key III (Cronin’s Key #3) – N.R. Walker

Cronin Key 3It’s always a pleasure reading one of N.R. Walker’s books especially something that is part of a series. This one’s obviously the third in her vampire series’ Cronin’s Key and it’s just as wonderful as the rest of the series.  Here, we see how Alec’s adjusting with all of his newly acquired vampire powers – powers that most vampires would give anything to have. Then enter the Zoan, half-lycan, half-dragon creatures that wanted to unleash evil in this realm with Alec’s help.

This one’s an easy read. There’s still that wonderful chemistry between Alec and Cronin (and Alec’s less talkative this time and became grouchy instead – LOL). There are characters here aside from Alec and Cronin that made me want for more books in the series. Kennard is one of them. I just loved him! He seems fun and he’s really funny with all his snarky banter! Another is Jacques! There seems to be an interesting back-story in there about this French vampire.

My one bit of criticism about the story is how big the whole vampire chaos has become. It’s like they’re literally trying not to be discreet about their “society,” – I mean, it’s almost disconcerting how Alec was being reckless about being seen and all. But hey, that’s just for me. I thought the whole story as a whole was more “focused” in terms of the plot lines this time despite the info overload about gargoyles. You will see what I mean with this one but I’m pretty sure that it’s also not going to be a big deal for you.

The ending was not what I’ve expected – It’s nothing shocking but I was hoping that we’ll see more of that “little guy” in the future if there are more books to come. Nevertheless, I thought the whole deal about the Key completing his quest was a perfect closure into their love-story. Seriously, N.R. Walker needs to write a companion series with Kennard or Jacques as its main characters. Highly Recommended.

Book Review: It’s A Wonderful Death – Sarah J. Schmitt

It's A Wonderful DeathDo you believe in the afterlife? Do you believe in Heaven? In Hell? What about Angels? Well, this book surely has it all when it comes to these things. I’m still in deep when it comes to discussing such stuff seriously but these are the things I’ve grown up with hearing from my friends, family and just about everywhere. I thought the blurb was interesting and it sounds real fun.

When seventeen-year-old mean girl RJ found herself in the afterlife by being accidentally collected by a distracted Grim Reaper, all “hell and heaven” breaks loose.  She found herself being tried on whether she deserves a second chance to live or not.  But she’s got to pass different tests in order to do so.

I honestly can’t find it in myself all throughout the book to like RJ as a character. She’s mean, selfish and just care about being popular. Very typical high school mean girl. Of course, she gets to redeem herself at the end but I’m still not a fan even after that. I think what made me keep reading this are the secondary characters.  As for RJ and her fate – Uhm, no. I feel like I just didn’t care at the end.

On a more positive note, I thought the story’s very fast paced and most of the characters are pretty vibrant. I initially thought that there will be a bigger plot point in the story involving the ring but the story got pretty much about on how RJ could go back on earth. I was rather disappointed that the story didn’t go much deeper.

There was nothing extremely unique about the story. It’s funny and fun enough but it lacks charm that I thought should be coming from the main character. Perhaps, I’m too old for the book so this may be enjoyed by its target audience. Overall, the writing and the story was decent. I’d still recommend it if you’re up for a quick read.

Book Review: Not After Everything – Michelle Levy

Not After Everything

I am not sure how I feel about this book yet – I guess I’m still trying to absorb how the author chose to end it. Some would say that it has a hopeful ending for our main character Tyler, whose last year in high school was marred by the suicide of his mother, for which he blames himself. Everything in between was just a cacophony of hurt, betrayal, discovery, recovery, and most importantly, love. I loved the fact that despite the heavy plotlines in the story and the too angsty plight of Tyler – new author Michelle Levy could relay the book into something that is not overly dramatic with an overabundance of purple prose. Thank the gods she didn’t because some authors tend to do with such a theme.

If you are up for something that will leave you just so sad, like someone just ate your puppy or be depressed like shit, this book is enough to leave you in such a state. Written entirely from Tyler’s point of view, it let us see how barely legal Tyler picked up his life after the heartbreaking loss of his mother and how he tried to go with the flow. Readers will feel that grief (I know I did – gaah, I told myself before that I’m going to try to stop reading such books because they destroy the hell out of me – emotionally, but gahh – this book! *sigh*) and all that hurt Tyler is keeping for himself. And if I can just sucker-punch his dad, I know I’d do it. At first, I didn’t see the need to keep himself from punching his asshole of a dad. I was like, cmon’ man – just one punch pppllleaseee… but no. Did not happen. Tyler’s a tough kid. Blame game. It’s a blame game all over again.

I loved how Jordyn and her family came into the picture. It’s just one of the bright spots in Tyler’s shadowed moment in his young life. It’s almost heartbreaking how they cared so much for him. The subtle blossoming in their relationship was fun to watch because you know that there’s genuine caring in there and there’s understanding. Most of the time, it’s true – all you need is love.

The conclusion of the book was rather heartbreaking. It’s hopeful, yeah, but I find it sad. There. At the end of writing this review, I finally decided to describe what I feel about it. It’s pretty believable. If I were in Tyler’s shoes, I don’t think I could come back. I don’t see myself coming back to that place in time. Just like Tyler, he will move one and will never, or perhaps it’d be a long time before he’d find himself looking back. Not after everything…

RECAP: America’s Next Top Model Cycle 22 Episode 8 (September 23, 2015)

Heya folks! So last week’s episode was whack! ‘Didn’t expect that double elimination to happen at all. I guess I didn’t really expect Bello and Courtney to win the top plum but I was hoping for more life to happen in this series – meaning more epic moments from Quing Bello and some sort of redemption from Courtney – but alas, no redemption arc there people (Now, Sia – be a dear please and send Courtney a year subscription of Vogue or yeah – what about getting her on your vids? *wink*) Now with the exception of at least two contestants, anyone could clinch the title! At the moment, I’m still team Lacey but let’s see if she could continue her domination in the competition.

The challenge last week was so predictable. Ugh. Justin, Nyle and Lacey teaming up was an easy win! Although technically, they did not win – they still got higher points to keep from lagging in the competition. Bello, Devin and Courtney did the worst as a group and as expected whilst Mame, Hadassah and Mikey won the Vine video-making challenge… hmmm… tutor me!!!! Fun! Fun!

During the photoshoot, it was a clear struggle for Courtney. I just felt to bad for her! I though Yu Tsai was just plain mean in that moment. Ugh. Poor Courtney!!! One good side though, she looks awesome!!! Ugh. Devin was a disaster in the shoot. What was that? He doesn’t look the part tbh. Bello on the other hand was just awkward as well as Mame. What happened to you over there girl? The rest especially Nyle and Lacey are just beyond!!!

So there, Lacey got the First Call Out again and Courtney and Bello are out! But wait this week because them eliminated models will return…..bwaaahhaahhhaaaa….

Watch out!

Book Review: Reign of Shadows – Sophie Jordan

Reign of ShadowI’m kind of on the fence with this book. I thought the writing’s really good. I loved the fast pacing of the story. It doesn’t feel like I’m reading a 300-page book. I also loved the chemistry between Luna and Fowler because even if their romance seems instant, there’s this sweet subtlety in it.

I’ve also got a few issues with it though. The first would be the novel’s world building. It was not clearly established why the eclipse transpired in the first place that became the focal point of the story – with the characters simply stating that the kingdom of Relhok simply was covered in a perpetual darkness that started seventeen years ago and along with it, is the emergence of the dwellers. There come my questions about the dwellers. Who / What are these creatures? I mean, who created them? Uhm, we’re all left in the dark here.

Speaking of the dark, another issue for me is about Luna’s blindness. I find her skills utterly unrealistic to be honest. I could totally go with her great sense of feel, her instinct and all but she’s just way too good (even better than Fowler most of the times). At one of the latter scenes in the book where she was chased by Anselm, I was like in awe how she easily navigates the tree village and that lift. I’m like – did just that happened? Just not realistic at all.

I guess there are just too many questionable stuff about this book that needs to be be address in the next installment/s. So to end this review on a more positive note; I really liked that little twist regarding Fowler. It was almost a giveaway but it’s a pretty good one. I didn’t know at first that this would be a series but I’m really gonna keep watch for the second book regardless of the issued I have with it.

Book Review: Willful Machines – Tim Floreen

Willful MachinesIt’s very difficult to write a review about this book. There are a lot of things that I could say about it – mostly positive and maybe some philosophical shit but I’ll try to incorporate the notes I’ve written while reading it. First thing you need to know – this is one fucking lovely book! I don’t find the premise too original but I find it very unique. Huh? I know right? It is unique because the author decided to use LGBT young adult characters and that is what I loved most about it. The author could’ve easily follow the “straight characters” YA route that would obviously garner much more readers but fortunately, He gave us this wonderful story where the main character is gay albeit very much closeted at the beginning. I know there are a lot of LGBT theme young adult novels coming out these days but it’s very seldom that we read something from this genre. It still the same teenage angst but it’s more current, much exciting and very much provocative if I may say.

Willful Machines takes place in a future where scientists create a new form of life: an artificial human named Charlotte. Everything is good and dandy until she decided to terrorize the world via the internet.

Enter Lee Fisher, the closeted son of the US president. Lee’s not too concern about Charlotte because he’s got other things to worry about including his crush on Nico, a new student at his school he’s trying to impressed until an attack at his school led him to believe that Charlotte’s actually targeting him. Should he trust Nico with his plan to uncover Charlotte’s plan? What is he willing to sacrifice to get the truth?

This is one of those books that make you stop reading it to think. Stop. Take a break. Hmmm. Think. Then read again. And read again until you’re done. It’s one of those special books that you’d both take by its face value and look underneath its written verses. Here, you get to be in the places of Lee and Nico respectively. It was solely narrated by Lee but there’s a very definite description pertaining to Nico’s actions and emotions.

One particular point that really struck me was when Nico vehemently said that “being willing to die for a cause you believe in isn’t the same thing as just wanting to die” pertaining to the bomb planted into Nico’s body. I thought about the suicide bombers used by the terrorist nowadays. I guess you get the drift and I guess those people especially the kids or pregnant women used as one doesn’t really wanted to die but they have no choice in the matter – they may have been forced. Kids, I would have to agree about them being forced to do it along with the majority of women /men but there are people who are really willing to die for what they believe in right? They’re doing it for something that they aggressively believe in regardless of the end results, in today’s cases, a bloody and chaotic end results. At one point in the book, I thought – it must be this strong feeling from them that pushed them to do it. I am not validating their deeds, I do not agree with them personally but there’s definitely something in it right? It was a thought that really made me think about these people who are doing what they’re doing. Just the whole WHY thing percolating inside my brain.

And I guess at one point, this would happen yeah? I mean the whole human-robot thing finally realized. I.Robot is scary enough if that would be the case but it’s very possible especially with the deluge of new technologies almost everyday.

I need to sum this up now because I don’t want to spill more spoilers about the book. You’d definitely get a kick out of this book. It’s nothing if not an incredible imagining of what could our future world will be like. Very much recommended.

About The Author
Tim Floreen writes young adult fiction. His debut novel, WILLFUL MACHINES, will come out from Simon Pulse in the fall of 2015.

One of Tim’s earliest memories involves sitting in front of the television and staring in awe at a raven-haired, star-spangled Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman. He went on to spend much of his childhood running around in a paper tiara and bracelets and tying up his grandma with his “magic lasso.” When not doing that, he was developing crushes on his Masters of the Universe action figures, memorizing the entire libretto of Les Miserables, and carefully maintaining his huge (and now mostly worthless) comic book collection. Also, he read a lot and wrote a lot.

Tim majored in English at Yale and earned a master’s degree in creative writing at Boston University. He now lives in San Francisco with his partner and their two cats. His recollection of the words to Les Miz and his adoration of Wonder Woman remain fully intact. He has yet to manifest super powers of his own, despite doing lots and lots of yoga.

America’s Next Top Model Cycle 22 Episode 7 Recap [September 16, 2015]

Mame and MikeyHere we go again for another predictable but fun episode of America’s Next Top Model Cycle 22! This week is about trimmin’ it down based on potential if I may just say so.
There was acting challenge this week with big people from The CW are present to judge it. Kween Lacey end up winning the challenge with Devin and Ashley settling for the bottom of the pit. Poor Ashley because Devin totally pulled her down this time. Whatever happened to DMA???

At the photoshoot, Mame and Mikey got partnered again for that cheesy mock boom boom boom deodorant commercial.

I thought Mikey and Mame totally killed the shoot. And by gawd, Lacey’s just too pretty for the camera!!! I just loved this girl!

Nyle on the other hand was challenged a bit here because the commercial requires talking and Nyle did it with signs naturally. I thought he did really well though ^__^

Courtney was great but she’s a bit tiring to coach yeah?

The rest is just in between. In short. mediocre.
