Cover Thursday: Fergie’s Big Girls Don’t Cry by Peter Carboni

You’ve probably seen Fergie’s viral rendition of the Star-spangled Banner during the NBA All-Star Game last Sunday where she infused the US national anthem with her very own and very Fergilicious style. Uh, no. I’m not going to discuss that at length. She already apologized (I sincerely don’t know why she had to) but anyway, I just want to pay homage to my girl Fergie by featuring one of her hit songs as a solo act with our Cover Thursday this week – Big Girls Don’t Cry!

This version is an acoustic one from Peter Carboni. He sang it real good. And he’s cute too! Hah!

We still love you, Fergie ❤

America’s Next Top Model Cycle 24 Episode 7 – Beauty is Raw Photoshoot

This episode was quite intimate in more ways than one. In a challenge where they had to create an anti-bullying PSA, the girls revealed some of the horrible tragedy they’ve experienced in the past. Kyla, Christina and Sandra won said challenge and and their video will be used as part of a national digital campaign for National Crime Prevention Council.

Tyra took over the lens this week with the remaining nine girls only donning their under garments for the shoot.

Brendi K.

I’m not the biggest fan of Brendi K. but this for me was her best picture to date. I loved that she looks fresh sans make-up.

Christina

I couldn’t imagine why this frame was deemed her best shot. She looks so uncomfortable and look at that tension in her neck! (Now, we don’t have to wonder why…)

Erin

I liked Erin but this reminds me of Bellatrix Lestrange posting a #justwokeup Insta story. Uh, no. Just no.

Jeana

I loved her but this isn’t working for me, tbh.

Khrystyana

This should have been her third ‘solo’ first call out! Girl is killing it!

Kyla

Okay, I kind of get the “editorial” vibe of it but this is real boring for me.

Rio

Bish knows how to work it. This is another favorite of mine this week. Werrrk.

Sandra

I loved Sandra’s look but up to this point, she’s just playing it safe. I want some fire from her and not just a pretty face!

Shanice

Miss Thing right here is fierce but the “rawness” of the shot – meh.

Surprise! Surprise! For the first time in the history of the show, we’ve a seven-way-tie for the first call out leaving (predictably) Christina and Erin at the bottom.

And not surprisingly, Christina (finally) got the boot! Bye girl!

Binibining Pilipinas 2018 Specials: My Second Hot Picks!

I’ve had a hard time selecting the girls for my second hot picks. After seeing them in person during the talent competition and their sponsors tour, there are some girls who went up from practically nowhere to the top of my list. Catriona is still a force in the competition. I firmly believe that she’s still the one to beat for the top plum at this point but there are girls who are peaking at this point and are challenging her claim to the most coveted crown.

It’s not going to be easy for Catriona to maintain her stronghold to the Miss Universe Philippines title but her international exposure, gift for gab and universal beauty are still the main factors that’s keeping her afloat amongst these bevy of beauties. She is still my Top Pick at this point.

Trailing behind her is the formidabble rallying of Ena Velasco. She’s slowly and surely becoming one of those girls that may pose a greater challenge to Catriona. She is beautiful, moves like a gazelle and her background as a doctor will play well to her advantage. For now, she is my alternate pick for the top title.

We cannot easily discard beauty over brains. This is a beauty pageant after all. Ma. Ahtisa Manalo is arguably the prettiest in this batch and her beauty alone could catapult her to the top. She is undeniable. A Miss International prototype to the hilt.

Vicky Rushton may just be Ahtisa’s biggest rival for the International crown. She’s like a ray of sunshine with that effervescent smile. Her presence has been widely felt in the competition since the beginning and I’m expecting her to peak real soon.

I am quite certain that if Michele Gumabao will be fielded to the Miss Supranational, there’s a big chance for her to bring the crown back to Asia. I’m still not discounting her to win the top plum but she’s kind of fading for me.

Karen Gallman is at a disadvantage because of her height but like Catriona, her gift of gab may just give her one of the coveted crowns. For now, I am delegating her as Katarina’s succesor.

***

I am delegating Aya Abesamis and Samantha Bernardo as my 7th and 8th placer for now. Both have polarizing yet similar auras. They are also in the ‘oldest’ contestants category so I am expecting that they will either go home crownless or one of them will do an upset.

To complete my Top 10 are Wynonah Buot and Loren Mar Artajos.
Wynonah because of her facial beauty alone. I’m still not sold by her overall packaging but I think she’s still got a lot to offer. Artajos’ experience will be a huge advantage for her but up to this point, I’m not seeing her advancing into the winners’ circle but she’s definitely part of the upper 50% .

Film Review: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)

via impawards

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri for me felt like an examination of how deep the connection a mother has with her children and how far she’s willing to go for them. In the film, Frances McDormand’s character Mildred Hayes boldly put up three billboards that questions the authority for seemingly not doing anything about her daughter’s murder.

McDormand’s portrayal of grief – misplaced or not – that is not only seen but felt. It is so palpable on screen it makes you feel her anger and frustrations. All of her solo scenes are nothing short of sublime.

Then there’s Dixon – a xenophobe police officer in Ebbing. I’ve to admit that I was a bit uncomfortable with Sam Rockwell’s character. A portrayal which reminded me so much of his evil character ‘Wild Bill’ in The Green Mile. He was so effective here that his character angers me so much..

It’s funny that this picture so thoughtfully reminded me of the very divided America now under Donald Trump. Dixon (Rockwell) feels like a personification of what everything Donal Trump represents pre-reading the letter Chieft Willoughby have written for him.

This isn’t just about the fight of Mildred Hayes for justice. I want to believe that this goes deeper than that. This is a representation on apathy and how evil humans could get. Was I convinced by that ending? By Dixon’s redemption? Not quite, but as Chief Willoughby told Dixon thru a letter – all we need is love. Cringy but worth contemplating.

Director: Martin McDonagh
Cast: Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Caleb Landry Jones, Kerry Condon, Darrell Britt-Gibson, Abbie Cornish, Lucas Hedges, Željko Ivanek, Amanda Warren, Peter Dinklage, Kathryn Newton, John Hawkes, Samara Weaving, Clarke Peters, Brendan Sexton III
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

The film received seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress for McDormand and Best Supporting Actor nominations for Harrelson and Rockwell at the 90th Academy Awards.
