Updates! Travel, Work Loads and Just Adulting in General!

I was a bit preoccupied these past few weeks and have only updated my blog intermittently when I keep on telling myself that I should post more but because of life getting in the way, (or maybe I just had the lazy bug) I was unable to put up posts regularly like I used to. When I’m not working, I am traveling (or planning my travels while reading books) and basically just doing some nice stuff to counter-balance my stressful environment at work.

Just to give you a bit of an update, I went to one domestic and three international destinations recently – a Coron, Palawan getaway, a trip in Taiwan with a couple of my travel friends and a solo-trip in Thailand and Cambodia! The Taiwan trip was planned since last year ( a supposed SouthAm trip), as well as the Thailand and Cambodia trip (which was supposed to happen at the time Britney had her concert at the Mall of Asia arena but ya’ll know I had to prioritize Mama.) I will be writing separate posts for each trip which may or may not help travelers like myself who wanted to go to these cool Asian destinations which by the way are all visa-free for Filipinos! (Just recently, Taiwan extended their free-visa entry for Filipinos until July 2019!)

I also just had my birthday last Friday which I spent half of in Bangkok! Hah! And right now, I am just chilling in front of my PC (yes! PC) after watching Belgium snatched the third place from England in World Cup!

I am so not looking forward to coming back to work on Monday but a man’s got to do what he’s got to do yeah?

And one more thing, I am thinking of revamping my website but I’m still in the process of thinking what improvements should I make  and exactly what should this blog be really about. 🙂

Thank you for reading! ❤

ICYMI: Trans Model Angela Ponce Wins Miss Universe Spain 2018!!!

A model from Sevilla, Angela Ponce will be the very first transgender to compete in the Miss Universe Pageant this year.

In 2015, Angela participated in Miss World Spain where Miss Barcelona Mireia Lalaguna took the title and went on to win the first Miss World crown for the country.

Ponce completed her transition in 2014 after years of hormone therapy, according to Mail Online.

Ponce will now have the distinction of becoming the first transgender woman to ever compete at the Miss Universe pageant.

Back in 2012, a landmark case was established by then Miss Universe Canada transgender contestant Jenna Talackova when she was initially denied by the organization to participate. The Miss Universe Organization then announced that as long as she meets the legal gender recognition requirements of Canada and the standards established by other international competitions,” then she gets the approval to participate in the pageant.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe – The Movie

Okay, calm down. We all need to calm down for a bit. Over the weekend, the ever so lovely Mr. Saenz tweeted a photo of him with Henry Alberto – the guy who apparently got the nod from our beloved author into writing the screenplay of the award-winning Young Adult book, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. I mean, screenplay. Like screenplay! Are we just months or years away from the very own movie of our dear Ari & Dante? Gosh! I was hoping for this for the longest time since I’ve read the book and I do know that eventually it’ll be translated into the big screen but having an acknowledgement that it would indeed be on the silver screen in the future is such a euphoric feeling!!!

Now, let’s just zoom past into the future as to who should be playing the main lead! If I were the casting director, it’d be awfully difficult for me to cast this once in a lifetime roles!!! Who are your Ari & Dante?

Road to the Oscars 2019: Lucas Hedges’ Boy Erased vs Timothée Chalamet’s Beautiful Boy

This year is shaping up to be a battlefield between Lucas Hedges and Timothée Chalamet on their way to the Oscars next year as these two previously Academy Award-nominated Hollywood It-boys are both headlining two major dramas based on real life.

In “Boy Erased,” Hedges will be playing the son of a Baptist pastor who has been pressured to attend a conversion therapy program after being outed to his parents played by Oscar winners Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman

The drama is based on Garrard Conley’s memoir of the same name is directed by Joel Edgerton who will also be in the film as the main antagonist. Focus Features will be releasing the film on September 28.

“Beautiful Boy” meanwhile is already gaining some Oscar buzz right after the awards season this year due to Chalamet charming the socks out of everyone during the year-long campaign for his breakout role in Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name.

Beautiful Boy follows the story of a father, played by Oscar-nominated Steve Carell who watches his son played by Chalamet struggles with meth addiction. It’s an equally serious and controversial topic as Boy Erased and it’s based on David Sheff’s Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction and Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines by Nic Sheff. Beautiful Boy is slated for an October release by the Amazon Studios.

It’s also possible that in Beautiful Boy, Carell will be push for the leading category while Amazon will campaign for a supporting role for Timmy. If this would be the case, it could be a win-win situation for both young stars as they won’t have to compete against each other.I loved them both and I am super-excited to watch both films. I’d definitely be rooting for them to get their golden statuette early in their respective careers! ❤

Film Review: Deadpool 2 (2018)

Deadpool is perhaps one of the most slaptick comedy superhero films in recent memory that I could remember watching and it helps that an actor as effective as Ryan Reynolds gave life to the Marvel’s out of the box comic character. If you’ve enjoyed the first film back in 2016, you’d definitely love this sequel even more!

Here, we see Deadpool’s inner mother hen in protecting the young mutant Russell (Julian Dennison) from another mutant Cable played by Josh Brolin (ooohhh Thanos…hhheeeelllppp!!!!). It is a feel good plot that delivers enough emotional punch that will make you say awww… every now and then. It’s very easy to say that this Deadpool here is definitely more emotional than the first one.

Deadpool 2 returns with more barrage of pop culture references that it almost made me wonder how the young millenials will be able to relate to it. But despite of its R16 rating, Wade Wilson aka Deadpool with  his crude humor and grit to match is still as charming as ever.

This is a must-watch for fans and regular viewers alike if you’re up for a good laugh and a hearty anticipation for the next installment.

Director: David Leitch
Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison, Zazie Beetz, T.J. Miller, Brianna Hilderbrand, Jack Kesy

Book Review: Once Upon A Western Shore (The Tyack & Frayne Mysteries, #9) – Harper Fox

Published April 30th 2018 by FoxTales Publications
Genres & Themes: LGBTQ+, Mystery, Death, Romance, Family
Kindle Edition, 160 pages
ASIN: B07BC9QNTS
Characters: Lee Tyack, Gideon Frayne

Blurb: It’s May Eve, and for once the body discovered in a meadow isn’t Gideon’s concern. The remains are decades old, and Gid and Lee are free to enjoy a proper Cornish Beltane, with maypoles, mirth, and a wild, sexy dash into the greenwood.

When trouble flares, it’s from an unexpected source: Tamsyn, after a quiet few months, suddenly manifests terrifying new paranormal powers. She can’t be kept hidden forever, and working out how to shield her is enough to drive a wedge even between these most united of parents.

Then Gideon’s cold case becomes a hot one for Lee. The dead man in the field has been forgotten by the living, but his memories are vivid and riding wild on the wind from the sea. No-one can act out his unfinished business but Lee, and it’s going to take all Gideon’s strength and love to get him through the ordeal.

Beltane magic past and present sweeps through Cornwall as Tamsyn steps into her powers, and the witches of the western shore look set to pay a dreadful price unless Gideon and Lee can bring to light the truth buried so long ago. This is another wonderful addition to the series! My favorite family! One of my favorite couples of all time! I just loved the whole thing about Tamsyn’s growing powers. She really is becoming what she’s supposed to be – the witch of Bodmin! I loved that we get to see Gideon and Lee’s domesticity here towards each other and towards their little girl. The whole plot feels like an ordinary day for this extraordinary family but it gets to you. The writing, the characters’ dynamics and the future of the series makes you all so excited! This is a superb read for the fans of the series – there’s a few tears here and there and a bit fo a surprise as well! It’s definitely worth reading and buying!!!

Book Review: War Storm (Red Queen, #4) – Victoria Aveyard

Published May 15th 2018 by HarperTeen
Format: Novel
Genre And Themes: Romance, Fantasy, Young Adult, Heroes, Slavery, Rebellion, Superpowers
Length: 672 pages, Hardcover
Ebook ISBN/ASIN: 0062422995 (ISBN13: 9780062422996)
Characters: Tiberias Calore “Cal” VII, Mare Molly Barrow, Maven Calore, Cameron Cole, Evangeline Samos, Iris Cygnet

I’ve only read the first three books this year.  Red Queen is a fantastic first book with fresh world building and very dynamic characters. I especially loved its main protagonist Mare Barrow. I do not understand why some readers doesn’t like her saying she’s too whiny, too annoying and all those shit. I actually loved that she’s very “human,” or very “Red” if you wanted to put it that way. I don’t like someone who’s too perfect. I don’t like someone who doesn’t have flaws and who’s OTP selfless and all those things that sometimes makes you wanna scream while reading because  seriously – she doesn’t need to be freaking Mother Teresa.  The second and third book didn’t click with me. I find them repetitive and well, annoying. Not because of Mare but because of how the story was stretched.

This fourth book for me is a bit of a letdown. I had hope that Ms. Aveyard would redeem herself by delivering a conclusion that is so strong it would make you want to see it on the big screen ASAP.  That ending was too forced for me. The nostalgia was forced in a way that it kind of tried to go the same way Rick Yancey did it with The Last Star via Evan’s character. Yancey’s ending didn’t work and so as this one. Before I delve deeper, let me enumerate a few things I loved about this last installment of the Red Queen Series. I’d try to be as spoiler-free as possible:

First is that we do not have Cameron’s POV and thank goodness for that. She was just annoying in the previous books and she is still annoying here.

Second is Evangeline’s character. She’s wicked but somehow there’s something about her that makes you understand why she’s doing all of these wicked things. She’s got loyalty that’s for sure. And she loves with her heart.

Third on my list is Iris. For those of you who doesn’t remember her. Haha. She’s actually Maven’s wife and is a Lakelands’ princess. You’d have to read the book to discover what her role is in the book!

And then there’s Maven. Poor evil Maven.  He’s my absolute favorite aside from Mare and Kilorn and it pains me that Victoria decided to kill her but I totally get why Victoria had to do it. I was thinking about it while trying to go through my day job and it totally made sense. Why would she keep him alive? It’s like letting a criminal get away with his crimes without any punishment. And he’s done too much evil to get a major redemption arc. I mean, in a way he probably got it via Mare but he’s got it coming for him and he knew he would die. I didn’t like that Cal was too chicken to actually go through it but I was certain prior to reading this that if Maven would actually die, it was through Mare’s hands.

Overall, I find the book a bit too ‘stretched.’ It was too long and I almost skipped but decided to go through everything since we’re not too busy at work. Haha! Again, that ending for lack of a better word was such a buzzkill. It doesn’t feel finish at all and it’s begging for a longer ending or perhaps an additional novella and we’d probably get it sooner than later. In average, I’m giving this series a total of 2.5 ratings.

If you’re a hard-core fan, you’d probably enjoy the length of the book but seriously, it’s just toooo much! I would just recommend reading the epilogue and you judge for yourself if you wanted to read its entirety.
