Book Review: The Inexplicable Logic Of My Life – Benjamin Alire Sáenz

Published March 7th 2017
Format: Novel
Genre: Coming-of-Age, Fiction /Family/Contemporary/YA
Length: 452 pages, Hardcover
Publisher: Clarion Books
Cover Artist: Antonio Castro H.
Ebook ASIN/ISBN: 0544586506 (ISBN13: 9780544586505)
Characters: Salvador Silva, Samantha Diaz, Vicente Silva, Fito Fresqeuz

Blurb: The first day of senior year:

Everything is about to change. Until this moment, Sal has always been certain of his place with his adoptive gay father and their loving Mexican-American family. But now his own history unexpectedly haunts him, and life-altering events force him and his best friend, Samantha, to confront issues of faith, loss, and grief.

Suddenly Sal is throwing punches, questioning everything, and discovering that he no longer knows who he really is—but if Sal’s not who he thought he was, who is he?

I couldn’t wait to read “The Inexplicable Logic Of My Life” by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. I chose to wait for the physical book instead of the ebook, and it was definitely worth it. And let me just say, it was an experience worth every moment of anticipation. This book, in its entirety, is a masterpiece.

The characters—Sal, Sam, Mr. V, Fito, Mima, and the others—leap off the pages with such vibrancy that they feel like friends you’d eagerly welcome into your life. Each character carries their own captivating story, enriching the tapestry of the narrative.

Salvador, the heart and soul of the tale, captured my admiration from the very beginning. His maturity juxtaposed with moments of childlike innocence endeared him to me in a profound way. If there ever was a fictional character to aspire to, Sal would be it.

In Sam, we find the perfect complement to Sal’s character—feisty, distinct, and an embodiment of unwavering friendship. Their dynamic is a testament to the richness of their bond.

Mr. V, or Vicente, stands out as a paragon of what it means to be a man—a complex portrayal that adds depth to the narrative’s exploration of masculinity.

Fito’s journey tugged at my heartstrings, showcasing resilience in the face of adversity—an admirable trait that resonates deeply with readers.

The beautiful language of the story goes beyond ordinary words, stirring a range of emotions that profoundly connect with me. It seamlessly intertwines themes of family, individuality, and love, prompting readers to contemplate their own journeys.

In all honesty, this book stands as the pinnacle of my reading journey this year. Benjamin Alire Sáenz has crafted a work of art that is simply unparalleled.

Benjamin Alire Saenz, you are incomparable!

About The Author
Benjamin Alire Sáenz (born 16 August 1954) is an award-winning American poet, novelist and writer of children’s books.

He was born at Old Picacho, New Mexico, the fourth of seven children, and was raised on a small farm near Mesilla, New Mexico. He graduated from Las Cruces High School in 1972. That fall, he entered St. Thomas Seminary in Denver, Colorado where he received a B.A. degree in Humanities and Philosophy in 1977. He studied Theology at the University of Louvain in Leuven, Belgium from 1977 to 1981. He was a priest for a few years in El Paso, Texas before leaving the order.

In 1985, he returned to school, and studied English and Creative Writing at the University of Texas at El Paso where he earned an M.A. degree in Creative Writing. He then spent a year at the University of Iowa as a PhD student in American Literature. A year later, he was awarded a Wallace E. Stegner fellowship. While at Stanford University under the guidance of Denise Levertov, he completed his first book of poems, Calendar of Dust, which won an American Book Award in 1992. He entered the Ph.D. program at Stanford and continued his studies for two more years. Before completing his Ph.D., he moved back to the border and began teaching at the University of Texas at El Paso in the bilingual MFA program.

His first novel, Carry Me Like Water was a saga that brought together the Victorian novel and the Latin American tradition of magic realism and received much critical attention.

In The Book of What Remains (Copper Canyon Press, 2010), his fifth book of poems, he writes to the core truth of life’s ever-shifting memories. Set along the Mexican border, the contrast between the desert’s austere beauty and the brutality of border politics mirrors humanity’s capacity for both generosity and cruelty.

He continues to teach in the Creative Writing Department at the University of Texas at El Paso.

Book Review: Underhill: A Halloween Story (The Tyack & Frayne Mysteries, #8) – Harper Fox

Published October 28th 2017 by FoxTales
Genres & Themes: LGBTQ+, Mystery, Death
Kindle Edition, 54 pages
ASIN: B076Z66FCH
Characters: Lee Tyack, Gideon Frayne

Blurb: It’s Halloween, and Lee is wrapping up a TV special at Underhill, a haunted house on Bodmin Moor. There’s only one problem – despite its terrible past, this house doesn’t seem to be haunted at all. Not great for the fans of Spirits of Cornwall, but all Lee wants to do is get home to Gideon and Tamsyn in time for their family party. Gid and Zeke are due to pick him up at any minute, so Lee sends his film crew home to enjoy their own Halloween plans .

The moment he’s alone, everything changes. When Gideon and Zeke arrive, they find the house deserted and dark. Zeke thinks Lee must have left with the film crew, but Gid’s instincts tell him otherwise.

The policeman and the preacher must set aside their differences and pool their gifts to pick up Lee’s trail. Will they be in time to save him from the ghosts and strange forces at work in Underhill House?

I’ve read this a week back and have re-read parts of it at least twice now. I absolutely loved this little Halloween novella. It’s so lovely to be hearing from Lee and Gideon again. I loved the feel of the story and the mystery behind it. Although it’s creepy I thought it was fun.

The resolution connecting one of the side characters was also genius. I loved that about Harper Fox. She can write so many characters but you won’t get lost in the story. She knows how to weave it smoothly.

‘Will definitely recommend this to fans of the series!

She lives in rural Northumberland in northern England and does most of her writing at a pensioned-off kitchen table in her back garden, often with blanket and hot water bottle.

She lives with her SO Jane, who has somehow put up with her for a quarter of a century now, and three enigmatic cats, chief among whom is Lucy, who knows the secret of the universe but isn’t letting on. When not writing, she either despairs or makes bread, specialities foccacia and her amazing seven-strand challah. If she has any other skills, she’s yet to discover them.

Book Review: Preacher, Prophet, Beast (The Tyack & Frayne Mysteries, #7) – Harper Fox

Published April 20th 2017 by FoxTales
Genres & Themes: LGBTQ+, Mystery, Family Drama, Xenophobia
Kindle Edition, 200 pages
ASIN: B06XFDW5Q8
Characters: Lee Tyack, Gideon Frayne, Zeke Frayne

This is the seventh book in the Tyack & Frayne Mystery series.

Blurb: Lee would gladly trade all his psychic gifts for a chance at ordinary life with his husband and his little girl. Three years into their marriage, they’re settled in their new home – but the House of Joy can’t shield them from an oncoming threat with the power to uproot their whole world.

Lee can’t define it further, and even his beloved Gideon can’t unmask a monster with no face at all. Gideon is mired in problems and secrets of his own as he struggles to adjust to his new rank and the complexities of plainclothes police work with CID, and for once the devoted Tyack-Frayne partnership is failing to communicate.

Turbulent times in the world at large reach deep into the Bodmin heartland, and the village of Dark is without its guardian constable. More than Lee and Gideon can possibly know has been depending upon their rapport, and as the summer rises towards the longest day, a new and unfathomable kind of Beast is afoot on the moors…

This is another awesome addition to one of my favorite series ever! Yaaaay!!! I thought that the last installment, The Third Solstice was the last one we’ll see of Lee and Gideon so I was on cloud nine when I found out that there will still be more Tyack and Frayne mysterious adventures!

If you’ve read the series from the start – you’d already know the strong undercurrent of darkness in it. Darkness in the form of many mysterious things from the Bodmin ‘beast’ to wondering souls and even the many peculiarity of people with special gifts.

This one is perhaps the darkest in the series. There’s a mounting pressure on Gideon with his new rank and Lee is somehow stuck in not seeing anything that may or may not prevent a tragedy.

Again, Harper Fox was able to deliver a riveting story that will give you goosies and a roller-coaster of emotions from start to finish. I loved the little revelations here and there and it’s so good to see all of the side characters (with my favorite Kitto)appearing in this installment. This is again another definitive proof of the author’s genius in writing!

Book Review: Take a Chance on Me (Firsts and Forever, #15) – Alexa Land

Date of Publication: October 29, 2017
Themes & Genres: Romance, LGBTQI, Contemporary, Comedy
Kindle Edition, 369 pages
Published October 29th 2017
ASIN B076ZB6BRW
Characters: Duke Blumenthal, Quinn Takahashi

Blurb:
Free-spirited ballet dancer Quinn is sure he made a terrible mistake by agreeing to be Duke’s roommate. The big cop is the most uptight person Quinn’s ever met, and both men begin driving each other crazy from day one.

Before long though, an undeniable spark of attraction ignites between them. But do opposites really attract? Or will their differences prove to be more than either of them can handle?

This gay romance is the fifteenth book in Alexa Land’s best-selling Firsts and Forever Series, but each novel is written to stand alone, so jump in anywhere. Note: contains adult language and graphic sex and is only intended for adults.

I so loved this couple! I think I missed a couple of intallments from this series but rest assured that this could be read as a standalone.

Quinn is such a character. He is quirky, has no filter and just full of life but deep inside, there’s an insecure little boy who doesn’t realize his worthy.

Then there’s Duke. All his life, he’s got to live in his dead brother’s shadow.

They both have heartbreaking backstory so, them getting together is destiny itself. It’s like they’re so opposite that they’re so perfect together. Odd but true.

My only criticism is the characters overload in the story. There’s just so many names in it and updates about the previous couples in the book. I mean, I loved reconnecting with them but it feels like there’s not enough space for Duke and Quinn here.

Overall though, it is still a wonderful addition to the series and Duke and Quinn are very easy to fall in love with.

Book Review: Game Point (Dreamspun Desires #45) – M.J. O’Shea

Date of Publication: November 1st 2017 by Dreamspinner Press
Theme & Genres: LGBTQI, Romance, Contemporary, Age-Gap
Format: Ebook, 194 pages
ISBN: 9781635337563
Characters: Quinn Valenzuela, Porter Davis

Blurb:
Game, set… match made in heaven.

Spoiled socialite Quinn Valenzuela has no interest in sports or his family’s huge sporting goods empire, Sparta Athletics. So when Quinn learns his grandfather has died and he’s in control of the corporation, no one is more surprised than Quinn himself.

Dedicated COO Porter Davis has little time and less patience for brats like Quinn who have never done a day’s work, but circumstances leave him with little choice. Quinn claims he’s ready to leave partying behind and grow up, but it’ll take more than words to earn Porter’s respect. As it turns out, they can work—and play—together after all. A friends with benefits arrangement makes sense for the two busy men, but are they too different for it to ever develop into more? Not if Quinn can convince Porter he has his head in the game

This whole Dreamspun Desires Series is a hit or missed thing and this one definitely hit the target! I loved both MCs. I liked Quinn onset of the story with bits of his backstory being explained on why he became a party boy. Porter at first was a bit annoying but I guess he made up for his awful attitude midway through. I still want to learn more about him though. The few things we learned about him are his fuck-up social climbing parents, him being a previous Tennis player and his sister Perry and nothing else.

It felt a bit rushed and I wished the ending was a bit longer but overall, the story is sweet with hot sexy scenes and likable characters so that’s a win for the author!

‘Will definitely recommend this one!

Book Review: The Cad and the Co-Ed (Rugby Series, #3) – Penny Reid & L.H. Cosway

Date of Publication: February 12, 2017
Genre and Themes: New Adult, Romance, Sports, Rugby
Format: 337 pages, ebook
Publisher: Self Published
ISBN/ASIN: B06W9J28CJ
Characters: Eilish Cassidy, Bryan Leech

Blurb: Keeping a secret this big is going to take lots of balls. Specifically, rugby balls.

THE CAD
Bryan Leech is a cad.
Or, he *was* a cad.
No one is quite certain.

Once the quintessential playboy, Bryan claims he’s done with wild parties and weekend benders. No more one night stands leading to mornings he can’t remember; no more binges and blackouts; no more exploits plastered all over the tabloids and rag sheets. According to Bryan, he’s cleaning up his act.

The only problem is, no one believes him.

THE CO-ED
Eilish Cassidy never thought she’d be a mother at nineteen or still in college at twenty-four. Cut off from every member of her family except her favorite cousin, she’s finally managed put her life back together. Stronger and wiser, Eilish enters her last semester of university determined to stand on her own. Now she just needs to find an internship.

The only problem is, her best option—by far—places her directly in the path of her son’s father, and he doesn’t remember her at all.

THE PLAN
Bryan is determined to prove he’s changed. Eager to settle down with the right woman, he’s got his sights set on the gorgeous redhead who seems terribly familiar.

Eilish is determined to hide her secret. She’ll do anything to keep her child safe, even if that means ignoring her own wishes and desires.

But what happens when Bryan starts to remember? And what will it take for Bryan to convince the girl he forgot that she’s unforgettable?

I haven’t been that active in Goodreads this year unlike the past three years so imagine my surprise upon finding out that there is already a third book in the Rugby series by Penny Reid and L.H. Cosway! Aaaaahhhh! I freaking adore these two authors and I absolutely adore this series. Here’s my review of The Hooker and the Hermit and here’s for The Player and the Pixie as proof! Hah!

Now back to this third installment of the series! My gosh! I think I’ve read it almost non-stop! I loved Eilish character! I loved that she isn’t overly dramatic and that she’s a strong, independent woman. Byran is kind of cute I guess but he’s kinda irritating at times. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me. Anyway, the story isn’t extraordinarily new but the way the authors structured it is absolutely fabulous! I super loved the family scenes of Eilish, Bryan and their cute son! This series is advisable if you’re needing a quick and a feel-good read! An absolute must-read!

Book Review: Reservations – Kindle Alexander

You all know how much I adore their work. Just search Kindle Alexander in my search bar to the right, and you’ll see. It’s incredible how effortlessly they create characters you can’t help but fall in love with. (Or maybe it just seems effortless because every single time… come on, girls!)

“Reservations” is no exception. I was genuinely excited when they revealed the cover, and it truly is beautiful. I found myself wondering, what could this book be about?

Well, “Reservations” lives up to its stunning cover. As expected, Kindle Alexander delivers once again.

Levi Silva’s dream of becoming a doctor is put on hold after his father’s death from cancer leaves him responsible for raising two teenage boys on his own. With ends barely meeting, he finds himself working in a gentlemen’s club called Reservations.

Enter Thane Walker, the commitment-phobic owner of Reservations, who is captivated by Levi’s beauty and demeanor. Both are stubborn and know what they want from a relationship.

The story delves into exactly that. Thane is utterly frustrating and an A-grade A-hole in the beginning, but as the story progresses and we learn more about his past, things start to make sense. Levi, on the other hand, is on point in every way. I found myself totally high-fiving him for his decisions regarding Thane. The boy’s got guts! Haha!

Clearly, I’m on Team Levi, so it’s entertaining to watch Thane squirm! Speaking of “squirming,” there’s quite a bit of that—I don’t know if it’s just me, but I found myself more drawn to the pre- and post-sex scenes when they have meaningful conversations. That felt more intimate to me.

We also see some familiar faces from other books, and I was especially thrilled to see Reed Kensington! I loved “Up in Arms,” and I wish Trevor had made an appearance too!

Overall, this is another solid effort from the duo of Kindle Alexander. I absolutely adored the main characters. I also enjoyed reading about Luke, Logan, and the delightful Julian (hurry up with his story, please!!!), and I can’t recommend this book highly enough!

Book Review: Painted On My Heart – Kindle Alexander

Blurb: Artist Kellus Hardin let love and loyalty cloud his past decisions, a mistake he definitely won’t make again. Now, lost and alone, he’s left to pick up the shattered pieces of his broken heart while facing the truth of his reality.

Arik Layne exudes power, confidence, and determination. But when an encounter with the guarded artist shakes him to the core and alters all his future goals, he finds more than just his heart on the line.

For Kellus, opening himself to love isn’t an option.
All Arik wants is to make the artist his.
Can love create a masterpiece when it’s painted on your heart?

This may contain spoilers.

Now, this isn’t quite a backlog review, as I just finished reading this book this month. I know! I know! I haven’t been as active or up-to-date with all the books coming out lately because, well, adulting demands attention. But let’s not dwell on that. Straight to the point: I absolutely loved this book. LOVED IT.

There aren’t many authors who create main characters with HIV, most likely due to the stigma attached to it. Unfortunately, that stigma in real life tends to seep into the literature we consume as well. I’ve come across few books with main characters afflicted by HIV that are as well-crafted and compelling as this one. I truly appreciated what the author did here. It was touching.

The story is incredibly emotional, perhaps the most angst-filled book by these authors. The sorrow emanating from Kellus is almost tangible on every page. The lost love, lost respect, lost lover… it’s heartbreaking.

Arik’s entrance into his life is like a lifeline. He is exactly what Kellus needed in order to move forward. The intensity of their chemistry is undeniable, and their love feels genuine. It wasn’t rushed, but it wasn’t dragging its feet either. They took their time.

Arik’s role in helping Kellus heal is beautiful. I’m deeply moved by these two characters.

While there are moments of frustration throughout the story, they are overshadowed by Arik’s personality and Kellus’s acceptance of love and loss.

I simply want to express my gratitude to the authors for creating this beautiful book. Highly recommended.

Book Review: Full Domain (Nice Guys, #3) – Kindle Alexander

I thought I should share this review before I post my upcoming reviews for two other works by the authors. This is another backlogged review, one that I hadn’t posted here since I shared a mini-review on Goodreads back in January of last year.

To be fair and honest, I am a fan of the authors—yes, in case you’re still unaware—Kindle Alexander is a duo of lovely ladies who adore the LGBTQ+ community, just like myself, and they’re enriching our lives with their magnificent writing!

First, let’s talk about that cover. I mean, come on, it’s a work of art in itself. I want to print that cover and hang it on my wall.

Now, onto the not-so-easy part: copying and pasting my review from Goodreads. This is, admittedly, my least favorite from the duo, and I have to say, I loved all of their books prior to this one. Let’s start by reading the blurb:

Honor, integrity, and loyalty are how Deputy US Marshal Kreed Sinacola lives his life. A former SEAL now employed by the Special Operations Group of the US Marshal Service, Kreed spent most of his life working covert operations and avoiding relationships. Never one to mix business with pleasure, his boundaries blur and his convictions are put to the test when he finally comes face-to-face with the hot computer geek he’s been partnered with. Hell-bent on closing the ongoing case for his longtime friend, he pushes past his own limits and uncovers more than he expects.

Aaron Stuart strives for one thing: justice. Young and full of idealism, his highly sought after computer skills land him a position with the National Security Agency. Aaron’s biggest hazard at his job is cramped fingers, but all that changes when he is drawn into the middle of a dangerous federal investigation. Aaron gets more than he bargained for when the FBI partners him with a handsome and tempting deputy US marshal. His attraction to the inked up, dark-haired man provides another kind of threat altogether. Aaron tries desperately to place a firewall around his heart and fight his developing feelings, knowing one misstep on his part could ultimately destroy him.

The solution isn’t as easy as solving the case, which is treacherous enough as it is. But the growing sexual attraction between them threatens to derail more than just Kreed’s personal convictions as he quickly learns temptation and matters of the heart rarely fit easily into the rules he’s lived by. Will Kreed be able to convince Aaron to open his heart and face the fact that sometimes the answers aren’t always hidden in code?

While I usually can’t stop talking about books by Kindle Alexander, this latest installment of the series left me feeling a bit unsatisfied. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I was hoping for something more innovative. It felt like a rehash of previous characters and plots, lacking the freshness I usually find in Alexander’s work.

Despite this, I must say that the book,as usual is well-written, even if it didn’t quite hit the mark for me. There were moments of repetition and an abundance of explicit scenes that made it a bit challenging to get through, and some character traits felt overplayed.

However, I don’t want to deter others from giving it a chance. It might just not have been my cup of tea, but I remain a fan of the author. After all, some of her other works are among my favorites in this genre, and I’m eager to see what she comes up with next.

Book Review: When First I Met My King (Arthur Trilogy ,#1) – Harper Fox

Publication Date: September 30th 2017 by FoxTales Publications
Themes & Genres: LGBTQ, Romance, Young Adult
Format: ebook, 138 pages
ASIN: B075G3Y8VP
Character: Lance, Arthur, Ector, Gaius

Blurb: Once upon a time, there was a winter that wouldn’t end. And all that’s standing between the people of White Meadows and starvation is a young man called Lance.

He’s sixteen years old, and for all his courage and hunting skills, he’s running out of fight. His family has been wiped out in a border raid, and he’s drowning in loneliness. When strangers arrive at White Meadows, all Lance can think of is using his last strength to drive them away.

But these men have come in peace, not to burn and destroy. Among them is a hot-headed, utterly charming prince-in-training named Arthur.

For Lance, Arthur’s arrival is like the return of the sun. The prince has everything – learning, battle skills, a splendid destiny. But as the days unfold in the remote northern settlement in the shadow of Hadrian’s Wall, it soon becomes clear that Arthur needs Lance, too.

I’ve to tell you though that prior to reading this, I’ve no clear background on the legends of Arthur, Lancelot all and I’ve only watched a couple of films, seen a bit of Merlin and read a few fan fiction which are all salacious in nature. Hah!

But hey, I am a huge, huge fan of Harper Fox so I’d eat up anything she offers. This story is actually kind of cute. I immediately fell for our two young adult protagonists. Lance is adorable with all his naivety and Arthur is plain riot! I loved that they have different voices! As per usual, the author’s lyrical writing is her absolute asset so you’d really get the feel of the era! I want more from these two! I’m so happy it’s a trilogy!!!

Highly recommended and this is from someone who doesn’t know shit about any Arthurian tales.
