Book Review: Crash & Burn (Cut & Run Series Book 9) – Abigail Roux

Crash and BurnCut & Run is one of my favorite series’ of all time and for it to come to an end was a bit bittersweet because I loved Ty and Zane and with their own story coming to an end feels like the ending of a new era – or maybe I’m just being overly dramatic.

So off to the final installment of the series called Crash & Burn. The most awaited wedding of Tyler Grady and Zane Garrett is finally happening here plus a ton of complications to go with and the author trying to tie up every loose ends.

I just have four main criticism about this last installment of the ever-so-thrilling and wonderful Cut & Run series.

The first one would be about Zane’s lack of POV. He doesn’t feel that present in the story. I loved how they finally tie the knot but after that – I just lost him along the way.

Speaking of being present, this ninth series was a bit like the previous installment where there’s just too much of fucking Nick O’Flaherty. He just became my most disliked character in this series to be honest.

The other thing that bothers me and also involves the self-absorbed Nick was Kelly’s dwindling characterization. Was he really a part of the Sidewinder or was it just my imagination all throughout the series? God, he became such a weakling since he hooked up with Nick.

The last thing that kinda ticks me off was how the author tried to connect everything. I mean does she really find the need to fill every loop-hole? It just felt forced and over the top at times.

I know what I’m saying may sound too critical but hey, at the end of the day I’m still a fan of Ty and Zane and I loved these boys. Although I’m sad that this would be the end of their own series, I’m still happy that they finally got their own happy-ever-after. I’m surely going to miss them and they’re probably be the only reason I’ll read more from the Sidewinder series.

Book Review: How To Howl At The Moon – Eli Easton

How to Howl at the MoonHave you ever felt so much giddiness after reading a book? I know I did and that is because of this “bursting-with-cuteness” book! I simply adore Eli Easton and have not read a book from her which I did not like. How to Howl at the Moon just totally got it from the get go.

Mad Creek is a little town where the population mostly consists of ‘quickened’— they are dogs who have gained the ability to become human. (I know right? Totally odd but totally fresh – ooh and totally wicked as well!). Lance Beaufort is the town sheriff and also a quickened descended from Border Collies. So when he came across the lanky and fumbling newcomer Tim Weston, he started to doubt him since he’s concern about marijuana growers infiltrating their own little world.  To satisfy his curiosity, he pretended to get hit by Tim’s car and was adopted in the process. Only things didn’t go well as he’d planned when he finds himself getting attached and falling for Tim. But how can he explain the deception to Tim?

How to Howl at the Moon takes on this new twist about “shifters” which I find odd at first but once the story started rolling – everything went perfectly! I just totally loved – as in LOVED it. I loved that the series actually started with the person / quickened whose main job is to protect the town! I love Lance! He’s such a goofball for even plotting that plan to check out on Tim! I also love Chance! I don’t know which I loved more – the human or the quickened Lance! Okay, so I’d go with both of them then.

Tim was just a sweet little thing. I loved his sensitivity and I just adore his awkwardness towards people. He’s such a darling!

The story development was fast-paced which I loved and the whole quickened thing was explain reasonably by Lance but I want more explanation in the second book. I want to know if there’re more places where quickened actually resides. My only tiny-itty-bitty concern about the story was the hybrid roses Tim was supposed to grow for the lady who let him rent her place in Mad Creek. It’s not a very big deal really but I was just a bit curious.

Anyhow, this was definitely a very good start of the series and I’m certain that the next one would be even better but right at this moment – Lance and Tim just totally stole my heart!

Again, what mad writing skills you have Miss Easton. Bravo!

Book Review: Missed Connections: I Swear To You – Sloan Parker

This is a  very short read with just the right amount of angst from each character. Mateo and Grady used to be BFFs but because of Mateo instigating  an incident from their past, they were forced to go their own way until Grady realized that he’s now ready to rekindle their friendship and their initial attraction. I usually don’t like stories where the MCs get separated because of a mere misunderstanding coated under the pretense of cowardice but here, I loved that because of it – they’ve grown and learned so much. I loved that Grady isn’t afraid anymore to accept his orientation  – I loved that he carry on through the years waiting for the right guy, that is – waiting for Mateo. I feel for what Mateo experienced from his psycho ex but we all know that we cannot avoid those things. I just loved that it ended well for them. I just wished that this was a bit longer otherwise, it’s a really good story!

Book Review: Shawn’s Law – Renae Kaye

Shawns LawI love Renae Kaye! I mean, I seriously loved all of her books so far – Loving Jay, The Shearing Gun, Blinding Light, Safe in his Arms and now Shawn’s Law. It’s an amazing thing to see a new author who never falters after her first book and her succeeding works just keeps on getting better!

Shawn’s Law is about 29-year-old Shawn who takes care of his Alzheimer-ridden mother and is probably the clumsiest character I’ve ever read or just simply the universe’ victim of Murphy ’s Law – only they called it in the family Shawn’s Law. Oh, and he also got the hots for his neighbor Harlie aka Mr. Hippy-Hotpants who apparently returns the favor! Yay! But things didn’t go easy with our couple. Shawn’s afraid that “Shawn’s Law” will just put Harlie in danger so he broke up with him – this however does not mean that Harlie would give up the fight so easily.

As usual, the chemistry between the MCs was there! The humor was almost slapstick (figuratively & literally). Sometimes, some situations come off as way over the top but it was still fun to read. The whole point of this book is to make its readers laugh first and foremost. I’ve had so much fun reading its entirety which makes Renae Kaye one of my go-to authors for feel good reads. This is very highly recommended!

About The Author
Renae Kaye is a lover and hoarder of books who thinks libraries are devilish places because they make you give the books back. She consumed her first adult romance book at the tender age of thirteen and hasn’t stopped since. After years – and thousands of stories! – of not having book characters do what she wants, she decided she would write her own novel and found the characters still didn’t do what she wanted. It hasn’t stopped her though. She believes that maybe one day the world will create a perfect couple – and it will be the most boring story ever. So until then she is stuck with quirky, snarky and imperfect characters who just want their story told.

Renae lives in Perth, Western Australia and writes in five minute snatches between the demands of two kids, a forbearing husband, too many pets, too much housework and her beloved veggie garden. She is a survivor of being the youngest in a large family and believes that laughter (and a good book) can cure anything.

Book Review: Moment of Impact (Moments in Time, #1) – Karen Stivali

Moment Of ImpactMoment of Impact is about two college roommates’ – the bisexual Tanner D’Amico and the closeted with a very religious family Collin Fitzpatrick – who fall in love until Collin was forced to come out in the closet. But who would Collin choose? Tanner or his family?

This would have been a fantastic short read if not for the single factor in the story that totally grate on my nerves – the girl bff / fubu. I’m okay with the story being so rushed. I was even okay with it about Collin’s quick acceptance of his sexuality but I just don’t get Tanner’s logic when the whole thing about them started – him liking Collin so much whilst fucking Wendy during those times. Ugh. It just feels kind of twisted for me to really understand or try to accept.

Even the quick change of heart of Tanner’s side from being so understanding to being a demanding college brat about their relationship is easy to ignore because everything happens so fast and in-between is the massive amount of sex in the story.

This has great potentials that weren’t fully realized and I’m hoping that it’d pick up in the second book of the series.

Book Review – Family of Lies: Sebastian – Sam Argent

Family of Lies SebastianThis is one of those stories where you fall in love with the characters because they’re so full of life they’re bursting off the pages of the book. This debut novel from Sam Argent is nothing short of spectacular. The author sure knows how to introduce herself in the kind of grandiose that only few debuts are able to pull off.

The story centers on Sebastian Orwell – a cloaked wizard who saved the life of the Crown Prince from an assassination attempt. This attempt led to an investigation that may involve Sebastian’s father. Trying to prove his father’s innocence, Sebastian gathered some help from the prince and his family to uncover the truth that may jeopardize his plan on keeping it under the radar.

One of the best things I loved about Sebastian was his snarky humor. His character was just so vibrant and so likeable (especially his eye rolling) that it’s so easy to root for him. His character just has the right amount of vigor all throughout the story. He’s not predictable and he’s just charming from start to finish.

Turren on the other hand was such a riot! I loved him because he’s just incredibly cute, hilarious and just plain adorable! He’s like one of those cartoon characters who are just so totally awkward that they’re cute! I loved that difference between his characters and Sebastian’s.

Sebastian’s family‘s just wack! They’re crazy! Like seriously crazy! I was laughing my heads off with their antics and with Sebastian in it – the crazy keeps on rolling!!!

It’s a pretty long book but it really doesn’t feel that long at all because you just want to keep going once you started it. The story was fresh taking place in an alternative universe and I loved that sexual orientation doesn’t really matter here. The whole thing just works with the characters, the stories, the theme – I highly recommend this great read! Congratulations Sam Argent!

Book Review: Legend – Marie Lu

I’m mostly convinced that prior to reading this novel, I’d get myself totally immersed with the world created by the author because a lot of peeps I know are raving about it – a future where America is divided between the Republic and the Colonies. Both of our protagonists hailed from the Republic. They’re both 15-years-old and both are surprisingly good at what they do. Only, they do different things – June’s the republic’s prodigy groomed for greatness in the military whilst Day is the Republic’s most wanted felon.

Their world collided when Day was accused of murdering June’s brother. In the event of Day’s capture, things started to unravel that made them an unlikely ally against the Republic.

I’m not going to lie; I really didn’t like this one as much as I liked other dystopian novels around. There’s nothing new about this book. The rebellion aspect of it reminds me of The Hunger Games, the experimentation points out to The Maze Runner and just the whole vibe seemed to run on a mixed-script from both novels. It doesn’t also sit with me that they’re only 15-years-old and the romance aspect of the story was highly promoted.

This is not to say that it was badly written though, I just find it utterly unoriginal and almost too long for such a premise.

Book Review: Heat Trap (The Plumber’s Mate #3) – J.L. Merrow

Heat TrapThe main reason I got this book was  to find out things about Tom’s identity – or at least who his real father is. I think that’s what’s keeping me glued at this point in the series. I absolutely adore Tom and his cheeky personality.

The book centered on Tom and Phil trying to help one of their “friend but not exactly friend” lesbian pub owner, Harry on getting one of her customers to back off from one of her barmaids. Then we also have the dealio about Tom’s father’s identity and the couple sorting out their relationship.

This installment however left me at a loss yet again because I couldn’t quite connect (still) with Phil. There’s just something not working for me about their relationship. Now, it’s very understandable for readers like me not to get the couple since apparently, they’re still at the very early stage of their relationship as a couple and we’ve only got the meet and greet with Tom’s weird-ass family and the novel hasn’t even covered Phil’s side of the family. Now I thought that was just way overdue at this point. But yeah, I guess we’d see that one sometime soon in the series.

Now off to some nice parts in the story, Tom’s best pal Gary finally tied the knots with his little darling Darren and as usual, he’s still a drama queen but a good drama queen at that! And outrageous, of course.

I mostly loved the whole relationship “talk” in this book (which I didn’t get much) and didn’t care at all about the mystery part involving Harry’s pub. The only mystery I was curious pre and post-reading the book is all about Tom’s dad! And we’ve got a cliffhanger for that. I was like, OHMYFREAKINGAWD. But after a bit, I was like – okay, I thought it’s a pretty good cliffie and at least we’ve that to expect next time.

As I’ve mentioned, I’m still not convinced with their relationship or maybe I’m just looking for more “Phil time” (maybe a POV from Phil next time?) but I loved that at least they’re progressing in their relationship. This is way better than the last book and was more realistic and I’m hoping next time that it’d capture more romantic time with the couple. Overall, I thought it’s a fun read.
