Film Review: Annihilation (2018)

I’m not big on these kind of films but this one piqued my interest from its very visually appealing trailer, plus one of my favorite actresses is starring in it so I ‘d easily searched it thru Netflix where it was widely released and tagged as one of Netflix originals.

Annihilation follows a group of an all-female scientist who enter a mysterious quarantine zone they call The Shimmer – a place where there is constant mutation from virtually all living things the shimmer touches.

There were several failed mission before the group where nobody has ever returned except for one – Lena’s (Natalie Portman) husband. Nobody has ever gotten information about The Shimmer since said husband couldn’t remember a thing and communications is jammed inside the Shimmer.

I’ve several questions about the central premise of the film but the major thing that bothered me is – if and when the / a group was able to gather information from The Shimmer, then what? It’s not like, we’re advanced enough to counter such entity (if you even wanna call IT that). Obviously, the whole thing was expected to expand and invade cities, states, countries and the rest of the world in time but what can we do exactly? I mean, all throughout I was just thinking about what are they going to do about a world that is constantly evolving, the way we are evolving now. If you wanna go deep and a philosophical about it – even without the Shimmer. We are evolving. Maybe not in appearance (just yet) but in every aspects of our lives.

It was a fascinating and visually stimulating film to say the least. Very typical alien-esque movie, not as artsy as the tree of life but definitely worth a watch or two!

Review: Thor (2011)

I am not a big fan of any Marvel characters or any Nordic myths, which means I don’t have the brightest idea about Thor. I just know that he is the God of Thunder from word of mouth. Upon seeing the film’s trailer, I’d say that I was quite impressed by it and was excited to catch the film in the cinema.

Last Sunday, I was finally able to catch it and true enough, it didn’t disappoint me one bit. The film was basically about Thor who is vanished by his Father from his kingdom to teach him a lesson –from then one, events took place to regain what he had lost.

The film was actually a typical superhero film for me. There’s the hero, his love interest, the goody-goody thing that he does and of course, the bad guys. Chris Hemsworth in my opinion was perfect for the role. He was very charming and looks great. Whilst Natalie Portman maybe a great addition to the cast as the Scientist Jane Foster, I find her character excessively flirty and not being there at all. Darcy, her assistant had stolen the scenes from her by delivering the humor of the film along with the lead character, Thor.

The best part about the film is its visuals. I daresay that it’s the best film I’ve seen this year so far – for this technical aspect alone. It has the perfect formula of a good film. Okay lines, kinda great characters and stunning visual effects. One will be able to understand and enjoy it thoroughly.

Based on Thor by Stan Lee
Director: Kenneth Branagh
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgard, Colm Feore, Ray Stevenson, Idris Elba, Kat Dennings, Rene Russo, Anthony Hopkins

I’ll give it a 9.5/10 ratings.

Review: Black Swan (2010)

via wikipedia

Natalie Portman has been getting all the good press from this film and her well-talked about transformation in this film got me really interested to try to get a copy of this film since its release date coincides with the Metro Manila Film Festival which basically only shows Filipino films until the second week of January. Plus, since its premiere at the 67th Venice International Film Festival –the film got me all excited to catch it with critics saying that she’s definitely a front runner for this year’s Academy Awards.

The premise revolves around the production of Swan Lake by a very prestigious Ballet Company who is looking for its pool of talents a new star to play both the White and the Black Swan. Nina played by Portman perfectly embodied the White Swan but couldn’t seem to be as sensual as newcomer Lily played by Mila Kunis who is also competing for the lead. In the process of the production, Nina find herself growing darker with symptoms of psychosis. In the end, Nina was able to perfectly dance as the Swan Queen both playing the white and the black swan but was ultimately drawn to her evil alter-ego.

Natalie Portman sure transformed as a Ballet dancer in this film. She exudes that nice and rather vulnerable persona of Nina. The scene where she stabs her alter-ego was just perfection and the dance rehearsals are all a joy to watch because you could really feel her surging emotions. I have to clap after she performed the final dance.

Mila Kunis was exemplary as well showing strong command on screen. I like her attitude as the cool, sensual Lily. I’ve to say though, that I was very much impressed with Barbara Hershey who played Nina’s Mom. She’s just amazing! Her scenes are one of the best in the film – and the creepiest as well if I may just say.

I have to agree with most critics that this is Natalie’s strongest performance to date (After Closer, I think). She definitely delivered the goods and her portrayal is just beyond. You’d get chills at some of her scenes because her acting was really piercing. I still place her though as a very good contender for the Oscar Best Actress since I already have my favorite for this award.

Another great film from Mr. Aronofsky.

Director: Darren Aronofsky

Starring: Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel, Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey, Winona Ryder

Ratings: 9/10
