Book Review: The Auspicious Troubles of Chance (The Auspicious Troubles of Love Book 1) – Charlie Cochet

Published June 20, 2012
Format: Novel
Genre And Theme: LGBT, Historical Romance
Length: 172 pages, ebook
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Ebook ISBN: 9781613725573
Characters: Chance Irving, Jacky Valentine

I’ve had this title for the longest time now and I’m not sure why I ‘ve totally forgotten about it since I bought it (along with Charlie’s previous works) after reading the author’s mega hit series, THIRDS. But while waiting for the last book of the THIRDS series, I decided to read Charlie’s back catalogue and here I am telling you about this beautiful story – pre-THIRDS success of the author.

Blurb: Chance Irving is a young man with a gift for getting into trouble-not surprising, as trouble is all he’s ever known. After losing everything he held dear one fateful night, he decides to leave New York and his past behind, and joins the French Foreign Legion. But even in Algiers, Chance can’t seem to shake his old ways, and he ends up being transferred to a unit made up of misfits and rabble-rousers like him-a unit he finds just in time to be captured and thrown into a cell with his new commandant, Jacky Valentine. A highly respected commandant with a soft spot for hard luck cases, Jacky is the kind of guy who would go to war for you, and the three equally troubled youths from his unit he’s more or less adopted feel the same way about him. Suddenly Chance starts to think that his life doesn’t have to be as desolate and barren as the wastelands around him. But even after their escape, with the promise of a future with Jacky to buoy his spirits, or maybe because of it, Chance can’t stop making mistakes. He disobeys orders, lashes out at the boys in Jacky’s care, and blazes a trail of self-destruction across the desert-until someone makes him realize he’s hurting more than just himself.

A Timeless Dreams title: While reaction to same-sex relationships throughout time and across cultures has not always been positive, these stories celebrate M/M love in a manner that may address, minimize, or ignore historical stigma

I just have to say that I absolutely adore Chauncey Irving aka Chance. He’s a fascinating character that you’d root for onset of the story. I loved his sass, his vulnerability, and his overall personality. He’s just so endearing as a child and as a trouble magnet adult. For fans of Dexter Daley – it is very easy to conclude that Charlie does have a prototype when it comes to his main characters. Chance is basically Dex’s twin brother from another era.

Then we have Jacky – good ol’ Jacky who have a soft spot for the cases like Jacky and his gangly unit of three troubled youths whom I equally adore like Jacky and Chance.

The story is fast-paced and very affecting at times. The blossoming relationship of Jacky and Chance is what the millenials are now calling #relationshipgoals  which made me swoon and tear up a bit!

I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a feel good read about second chances in life and love.

Book Review: Invictus – Ryan Graudin

Published September 26, 2017
Format: Novel
Genre And Theme: Young Adult, Science Fiction, Time Travel, Alternate Universe
Length: 464 pages, ebook
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Ebook SBN13: 9780316503136
Characters: Farway Gaius McCarthy

Blurb: Time flies when you’re plundering history.

Farway Gaius McCarthy was born outside of time. The son of a time-traveling Recorder from 2354 AD and a gladiator living in Rome in 95 AD, Far’s birth defies the laws of nature. Exploring history himself is all he’s ever wanted, and after failing his final time-traveling exam, Far takes a position commanding a ship with a crew of his friends as part of a black market operation to steal valuables from the past.

But during a heist on the sinking Titanic, Far meets a mysterious girl who always seems to be one step ahead of him. Armed with knowledge that will bring Far’s very existence into question, she will lead Far and his team on a race through time to discover a frightening truth: History is not as steady as it seems.

The first book I’ve read from Ryan Graudin was Wolf by Wolf which thoroughly impressed me. The author created an alternate reality post World War 2 in which the Axis Power won the bloodiest war in human history. With that premise, I didn’t think she’d be able to top it. But lo and behold – another time-related world has been created by her genius and it’s nothing short of amazing!

I loved time-travel stories and I am an avid fan of history so this is definitely a double-win for me!

As for  its characters, I thought it would’ve been tricky for the author because of the multiple point of views of most, if not all of the characters in the book. Usually, I tend to veer away from such style but Ryan just know how to do it right. I love the core team comprising the Invictus. They are all likable except for one. There’s Far’s cousin Imogen whose penchant for hair color is the focal point of her character aside from being the Historian of the team. Gram is the genius engineer.  Priya is the medic and Far’s love interest.  And their newest member, Eliot – the mysterious girl who annoyed me to pieces. Her character just didn’t clicked with me no matter how the author tried to justify her existence.

One of the focal points of the story is its time travel aspect throughout history. There wasn’t much really. Most of their adventures were off-page but I loved how Graudin tried to insert minute details in them . I wished that some of them were longer but I appreciate the fact that the author didn’t indulge too much because methinks it might drag the story somehow.

The ending was a bit anticlimactic but satisfying nonetheless. I felt some sort of relief when I finished it but really, I wanted a longer epilogue. Or maybe, I just want more from this universe because it’s just so fascinating. I cannot recommend this highly enough and I think at this point, overall –  it’s got to be the best book I’ve read this year.

Characters: Kelly Sutton, Mars

Blurb: Enthusiastic, play-it-safe Kelly Sutton is an American intern at the Photonic Royal Society in New London. He’s been working on Project Mars for over a year, a mission kept so secret by the Society even Kelly doesn’t know exactly what it is. What Kelly does know is his contribution to the task will benefit mankind, and that’s enough for him.

Kelly’s world turns upside down when concerns over his mentor’s behavior lead Kelly to investigate and stumble upon a wicked truth. What is supposed to be a project to advance human life turns out to be an endeavor capable of mass destruction. The terrifying reality forces Kelly to choose between looking the other way to keep his job, as he’s always done, or risking his career and even his life to do the right thing by saving the man who’s captured his heart.

***

I’ve been reading some titles from Charlie’s back catalogue and I realized that I haven’t posted here about this lovely novella. I actually gave this a five star ratings on Goodreads and here’s the short review I’ve posted on said site:

Mars and Kelly are just the cutest ever! This is definitely a classic Charlie Cochet style! I loved the super adorable characterization. The usual Dex/Sloane characters formula is everything! I loved Mars and how he ‘fell in love’ with Kelly even before meeting him. What a precious AI-hunk! The whole story was quick but it doesn’t feel rushed. Now, I really want to read the story of Lucius and Jordan so I hope Charlie’s planning to write one.

Book Review: Love is Heartless (Love Can’t Series, #2) – Kim Fielding

Date of Publication: January 13, 2016
Genre and Themes: LGBTQ, Child Abuse, Romance, Mystery, Murder
Format: 254 pages, ebook
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
ISBN: 9781635332148
Cover Artist: Brooke Albrecht
Characters: Nevin Ng, Colin Westwood

BLURB:
Small but mighty—that could be Detective Nevin Ng’s motto. Now a dedicated member of the Portland Police Bureau, he didn’t let a tough start in life stop him from protecting those in need. He doesn’t take crap from anyone, and he doesn’t do relationships. Until he responds to the severe beating of a senior citizen and meets the victim’s bow-tied, wealthy landlord.

Property manager and developer Colin Westwood grew up with all the things Nevin never had, like plenty of money and a supportive, loving family. Too supportive, perhaps, since his childhood illness has left his parents unwilling to admit he’s a strong, grown man. Colin does do relationships, but they never work out. Now he’s thinking maybe he won’t just go with the flow. Maybe it’s time to try something more exciting. But being a witness to a terrible crime—or two—was more than he bargained for.

Despite their differences, Colin and Nevin discover that sparks fly when they’re together. But sparks are short-lived, dampened by the advent of brutal crimes, and Colin and Nevin have seemingly little in common. The question is whether they have the heart to build something lasting.

The story overlaps with the first book, Love Can’t Conquer  and has an alternating point of views between Nevin and Collin but it can be read as standalone.

Let’s talk about Nevin. I’m not that much of a fan of his character at first. He’s a typical fuckboy and I don’t like that side of him. I get that he’s commitment-phobic and all that but during the first few chapters, he’s like itching for sex every single page. I’m like, seriously, is he always horny? I mean, I get that he’s lonely, I get that he’s stressed but it’s kind of off-putting. That’s just me though.

You have to understand that his childhood didn’t give him much to be happy about. I eventually started to like him at the latter part of the story so all’s good. He actually kind of reminded me of Ash from the THIRDS series by Charlie Cochet.

Then there’s sweet, sweet Colin. He came from a rich and very accepting family and has a super adorable cat named Legolas. On the exterior and perhaps financially, he is the total opposite of Nevin but both men have good hearts.

The story isn’t as intense and as angsty as the first book but it does have its moments especially when they finally realized they are meant for each other. Guessing the culprit in the serial killing of old people in the story was a bit predictable but the execution was good because the story didn’t really center on it. It was mostly about the day to day lives of our main characters. The banter between them was real good and the side characters including Colin’s parents are a real joy to read.

This is another wonderful story from Kim Fielding. It’s a shame we didn’t hear much from Parker (Rhoda’s son) this time because if I were to based it in the first book of the series, I kind of thought that we’d get his story next. Maybe he’s up next!

Book Review: Finding Mr. Wrong – Charlie Cochet

Published September 1, 2017
Format: Novel
Genre And Theme: LGBT, Gay Romance, Gay Fiction
Length: 169 pages, ebook
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Ebook ISBN: B074TCBFG7
Characters: Matthew Hart, Jax Foster

I absolutely loved this book! It is by far my favorite from the Dreamspun series! Charlie is simply a delightful storyteller. The story is as sweet as it can get and in a really, really good way!

BLURB
He’s nobody’s definition of Mr. Right—but that might make him perfect.

Matthew Hart is heir to the family fortune and owner of Hart & Home. When a near-death experience has him fretting over the future, he decides he needs a husband, and not just any husband—an appropriate man to protect the Hart legacy. The last thing Matthew expects is to cross paths with Jax Foster, his first love and the boy who crushed his heart when he disappeared.

Jax is unlikely to make Matthew’s list of suitable candidates. Bad boy, vagabond, deep in debt, with a father who can’t keep out of trouble, Jax has nothing to offer—except his heart and a second chance at the romance they never got to explore.

So Matthew.  I loved him! He’s like the subdued version of Dex from the author’s THIRDS series (if you haven’t read this series, you should start now because you really don’t wanna miss out!) but he’s as lovable as Dex.

Jax. Oh, that name! Jax is Fabio with that sexy blonde locks and he is the Sloane Brody here (Haha! Sorry for the THIRDS connection. Not sorry! ) The strong, sexy, quiet alpha male who couldn’t seem to get a break.

Then there’s Adam the good-ol-super adorable assistant! I loved him from the get go and couldn’t wait to read his own story!

Speaking of the story – there’s nothing very unusual about it but the flow from start to finish is perfection. You’d fall for the characters right away. The plot is in fact very TV soap-ish but the whole cheesy romantic reunion just clicked real good here. I was hoping for more pages when I finished it. I want to read more from Matthew and Jax and I’ve a feeling that I’d see them again because there is no way Adam isn’t getting his own love story!!!

Highly Recommended!

Book Review: Imagines (Imago, #2) – N.R. Walker

Date of Publication: April 8, 2017
Publisher: BlueHeart Press
Genre: LGBT, MM Romance
ASIN: B06Y599DJK
Characters: Jack Brighton, Lawson Gale

The second book of Imago is the continuation of Lawson Gale and Jack Brighton’s blossoming love affair. It’s been a blissful six months for the two and they are very much in love.

Here, Lawson was offered a two-week research position in Queensland to determined why a species of butterfly is diminishing. Since they’ve initially planned to take a trip together, he and Jack decided to combine work and pleasure altogether.

Now, if the first book was “conflict-less,” this one has a whole lot of it since the whole researching job involves a certain professor that apparently has a thing for Lawson. Not only that, it also involves a career-changing decision that may affect their budding relationship.

I really enjoyed reading this one. I loved the development of their characters and their story. I loved that the characterization of each of our main character is consistent. Lawson being an accident magnet is as funny and adorable as ever whilst Jack’s superhero complex is super swoon worthy!

The whole thing is still as sweet as the first book! This is another easy read from N.R. Walker and a book that I’d totally recommend.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

About The Author
N.R. Walker is an Australian author, who loves her genre of gay romance.
She loves writing and spends far too much time doing it, but wouldn’t have it any other way.

She is many things; a mother, a wife, a sister, a writer. She has pretty, pretty boys who live in her head, who don’t let her sleep at night unless she gives them life with words.

She likes it when they do dirty, dirty things…but likes it even more when they fall in love.

She used to think having people in her head talking to her was weird, until one day she happened across other writers who told her it was normal.

She’s been writing ever since…

Book Review: Imago (Imago, #1) – N.R. Walker

Date of Publication: February 8, 2017
Publisher: BlueHeart Press
Genre: LGBT, MM Romance
ASIN: B06VXS641F
Characters: Jack Brighton, Lawson Gale

I’ve read this the first week of its release and was able to finish it in one seating. N.R. Walker is one of my favorite authors from the LGBTQ+ genre and she never fails to deliver.

Lawson is the adorkable lepidopteist who came across Local Parks and Wildlife officer, Jack Brighton in a small town in Tasmania while searching for a species of butterfly that may or may not even exist.

Jack Brighton with his lovely dog Rosemary is pure love. He is just too dreamy for words. I loved his personality and his reactions towards Lawson’s quirks.

Lawson and Jack are easily the most likable couple ever and you’d definitely root for them onset of the story. Theirs is the typical boy meets boy story that will melt your heart and will make you go aww… from start to finish.

The chemistry between them is right there from the very beginning and how they fell in love is just all sweet and buttery. Peeps who are looking for conflict will not find it here. This book is an easy read when you just want to feel something good. It is a feel good story with not much drama but overflowing in the romance department. ‘Will highly recommend this one!

Book Review: Micah Johnson Goes West (Get Out, #2) – Sean Kennedy

Date of Publication: April 4, 2017
Genre and Themes: LGBTQ Young Adult, Homophobia, Sports, HIV
Format: 186 pages, ebook
Publisher: Harmony Ink Press
ISBN: 1635333644 (ISBN13: 9781635333640)
Cover Artist: Catt Ford
Characters: Micah Johnson

I was not the biggest fan of Micah Johnson. I didn’t like him when he first appeared in the third book off the Tigers and Devils series but after reading The On-going Reformation of Micah Johnson, I realized that he wasn’t that bad. I was actually excited to read this one but I got hesitant when I’ve read its blurb.

BLURB: On the outside, Micah Johnson seems to have everything. He is proving his worth on the field during his rookie year with his new professional football team, the Fremantle Dockers, but his personal life is a mess. Homesick, three thousand kilometres away from his family and friends on the other side of Australia, Micah isn’t coping. He’s using casual sex, alcohol, and drugs as crutches since he doesn’t feel comfortable approaching his foster family with his problems, and he’s left with nowhere to turn. It isn’t until he experiences a health scare and a friend is rocked by a personal tragedy that Micah realises he does have the strength to succeed at a new life in the West—but he has to learn to ask for help

Overall, I’ve really enjoyed it. I loved that Micah is maturing overtime. He still got a lot to work on especially when dealing with his emotions but I ought to give him a break I guess because he’ still very young after all. I loved that the story arc is very relevant what with different athletes coming out of the closet and bravely enduring the taunts of closed-minded people who still thinks that no gay men could ever play sports. I also adore his friends and family and how supportive they are with his budding career. It was a really good read and another top notch sequel from the author. Fans of the first book won’t be disappointed.

Book Review: Goodnight My Angel (Angel Enterprises, #2) – Sue Brown

Kindle Edition, 249 pages
Published March 30th 2017 by Sue Brown’s Stories
ASINB06XY7X2G2
Language: English
Series: Angel Enterprises #2

Blurb: Callum Ross has a tough decision to make. After years of working for the covert ops agency in the UK and owning his own security firm in the US, he’s forced to choose between the business he loves, and the new relationship with his partner, Josh Cooper.

A bottle of whiskey and Josh almost being killed helps Cal make the decision, and he moves to the UK with plans to set up his own security consultancy. Then the head of the covert ops agency where Josh now works asks Cal for help. Agency operatives and their families are being injured or killed, including Cal’s friends.
Cal is asked to investigate with Josh’s assistance.

As the number of victims increase, they’re aware either of them could be the next target for the killer.

Warning: This is not a stand=alone book and this review may contain some spoilers.

In the second installment of Angel Enterprises, there’s someone who infiltrated the agency and started killing those related to it. Cal, Josh and the gang would have to move smart and fast in order to capture the culprit . We also see Josh and Cal work around their relationship interweaving with their respective careers.

Cal is very much present in this story which i’m very happy about because it was mostly Josh that we’ve got to know in the first book. The downside is, I kind of missed the Josh I fell in love with in Morning My Angel. Don’t get me wrong tho, it’s still a wonderful read but somehow, It felt like it focuses more on the mystery and the romance aspect became a side story.

I thought the mystery of the killer and the “mole” within the agency was cleverly narrated (hidden) until the last chapter but I wished there was less casualty because there were some very interesting characters right there.

At some point, I didn’t know whose POV it was that I was reading but it didn’t matter much because it simply revolves around the main focus of the story which is the murder of those related within the agency.

This is still a pretty solid follow up to Sue Brown’s Morning My Angel. The cliffie at the end was real good. I’m really excited to read more from this series! I just hope that the next installment would include more of Josh and Cal’s interaction than their interaction with the side characters.

Book Review: Morning My Angel (Angel Enterprises #1) – Sue Brown

Theme & Genre: LGBTQ, Romance, Mystery
ISBN 9781370601196
Format: Ebook
Characters: Callum David Ross, Josh Cooper

Blurb:
Josh Cooper, top US security field agent, is sent on an inter-agency assignment to London, when a partner in his firm goes missing in suspicious circumstances. Used to working in sole charge of his well-honed team, he clashes heads with the handsome, but pompous Cal, his UK co-operator and superior. Josh’s gut tells him something is wrong. He’s being kept out of the loop and Cal’s agenda is running on a different path.

He also has a personal issue to deal with. He’s involved in a cyber-relationship with “Charlie”, an unknown man who connected with Josh by accident. Their banter has led to deeper respect and a sexual interest, but now Josh is faced with a growing attraction to Cal. Between this conflict and the tension of the mission, Josh’s heart and head are overworked and confused. Things can’t get much worse.

Then Josh discovers the enemies he’s seeking have a new target: him.

Review: Let me start by saying this is by far my most favorite read from Sue Brown! It’s got romance, mystery, suspense and the writing is just simply sublime!

The characters in this story are dynamic, vibrant and very easy to picture in your head.

I super loved Josh’s character! He’s smart, witty, cocky and just all-around adorable! I loved his voice and the way the author showed different facet of his character. He’s definitely one of my favorite characters this year!

Then there’s the big, alpha, swoon-worthy Cal. His character simply complemented Josh’s in every way. I loved that we get to see his vulnerable side, which is very much adorable, if I may just say since it usually involves Josh’s welfare.

As for the secondary characters – it’s interesting to note that we get to read more of Jesse and Dan here from the Lyon Roads Vets series. I wasn’t a big fan of Jesse from that series but I kind of enjoyed him here. The rest are very well written that you’d have to read until the last chapter to really get to know them.

The mystery part of the story was fabulously sketched here. It’s well-paced and  I loved that it keeps me guessing until the very end.

And the romance – ohmygod! Absolutely delicious! I adore Josh and Cal individually and together – they’re just explosive! Their chemistry is just absolutely beyond!

I cannot recommend this enough for fans of the author and mm romance/suspense readers! Seriously, you have got to get hold of this one! ‘Cannot wait to read more from this series!
