Book Review: Come What May (All Saints, #1) – A.M. Arthur [ARC]

Come What MayDate of Publication: May 23, 2016
Format: Novel
Genre And Theme: New Adult LGBT Romance
Length: 320 pages, ebook
Publisher: Carina Press
Ebook ASIN: B0176646RS
Characters: Jonas Ashcroft, Tate Dawson

Jonas Ashcroft is a spoiled rich fratboy sent by his controlling father to his aunt and uncle’s after a horrible incident at school led to his expulsion. Jonas doesn’t really give a hoot with anyone weaker than him but deep inside, there’s an insecure boy who suffers from dyscalculia and is almost always looking for his father’s approval. And he is also very much in the closet.

Enter Tate Dawson – he’s everything Jonas’ yearning to be. Tate is confident, caring, responsible, and openly gay who runs an LGBT teen homeless shelter along with his bestfriend Marc.

There’s an instant sparkle of attraction between them that led to something that both didn’t expect but life keeps getting in the way and they may just have to fight harder in order to maintain what they have – come what may.

This was a very quick and easy read. Come What May is a story that feels very current. Perhaps, because the characters are very young and what they have is something that most LGBT young adults goes through life at some point – coming out, dealing with the positive and negative consequences from doing so, making choices and just trying to be themselves.

Jonas is a lovely character whom you want to give a big hug because his vulnerability is palpable on page. There’s the little boy who’ve always wanted to please his parents but to no avail. I’ve said it again and again and I’m still not a parent myself but I couldn’t imagine how you could treat your own flesh and blood, your kid like the way Jonas’s parents had treated him. It’s unfathomable for me although it’s basically, reality kicking me in both nuts!

I loved Tate and I adore his understanding nature. I loved his patience towards Jonas and his voice actually sounded real young than his 24 years of age. I loved that he didn’t push beyond what Jonas is willing to offer.

The story isn’t complicated but it’s the idea of it being very realistic that sold me into it. There’s really nothing new to it but the writing was really good and it was very engaging as well. I will definitely be looking forward to the next book!

Book Review: Finding the Sky – A.M. Burns [ARC]

Finding The SkyRELEASE DATE: Feb 10, 2016
Format: Novel
Genre: Young Adult
Length: 180 pages, ebook
Publisher: Harmony Ink Press
Cover Artist: Bree Archer
Ebook ISBN: 978-1-63476-338-7
Characters: Dillon Smith

I thought the book has a pretty diverse plot points that were scattered throughout the story. There’s gangs, interracial relationship, homosexuality, terrorism and wildlife. It centers, though, on sixteen-year-old Dillon Smith who has been getting harassed by a gang trying to recruit him. An implication in the gang robbing a convenient store made his mom decide to send him away to his Uncle Bryan for the summer. On their way to the country, Dillon and Bryan rescued a hawk and took it to a wildlife rehabilitation center. There, Dillon meets Scott, the son of the  two gay rehabbers and from then on – Dillon eyes were open to a lot of possibilities which includes falling in love. Little did he know that the gang is not planning to let him go that easy.

In general, I liked this book. It’s very neat and very quick-paced. I liked Dillon’s character. He’s only sixteen so I appreciate that his mindset and his attitude is very apt to his age. I wished that he wasn’t that prim and proper though. Actually, thinking back – I thought the dialogues were a bit too polished – almost unrealistic at times. It didn’t bother me at all. I mean, it worked in the story so that’s a win for the author.

I also loved the romance between the two teenagers. Scott is an equally great character. Perhaps a bit too perfect? Not that I’m complaining tho. Can I also say (I dunno, maybe it’s just me) that there’s this rippling sexual tension between Dillon’s uncle and Scott’s Dads? I mean, if the author wanted to explore that idea – I thought it’d be wonderful or maybe a book for Bryan as well with a different guy?

That solution to Dillon’s predicament was almost too convenient but I’m totally buying it. I loved how everything turned out, although, not as realistic as some people would see it but at the end of the day, it made me feel really good. This is a really good young adult read – not too angsty and not too light – just the right amount of zing.

Book Review: Until September – Chris Scully [ARC]

Until SeptemberRELEASE DATE: Feb 8, 2016
Format: Novel
Genre: Romance/Family/Contemporary
Length: 298 pages, ebook
Publisher: Riptide Publishing
Cover Artist: Lou Harper
Ebook ISBN: 1626493553
Print ISBN: 9781626493568
Characters: Archer Noble, Ryan Eriksson

Archie Noblesse did everything to escape his brutal past and leave his family and his Cree heritage behind enabling him to reinvent himself as Archer Noble, a successful blogger and author who lives only for himself.

His world went upside down when he gets a phone call that brings all his plans for his future crashing down. A car accident takes his only sister leaving behind two children who are parentless after they lost their father a few years prior.

Enter Ryan Eriksson, the teacher whose love for his sister and the kids is undeniable and someone who disagree in everything Archer stands for. Despite this, Archer easily agreed on having Ryan help him with the kids, even offering him the custody eventually.

Ryan on the other hand is adamant for Archer to give parenting a chance despite his chance of having a family of his own, something that he’d always dreamed of. He convinced Archer to try being with them for the summer and stay until September, only things turned out unexpectedly for both of them.

This is the first book I have read by Chris Scully. I was interested in the first few chapters but it actually started picking up for me at the latter part of the story. I find it a bit slow in pacing but the writing was very lovely.

I loved the easy chemistry between Archer and Ryan here; they are so opposite (physically and personality-wise) so they really tend to butt head but there’s something very likable about them. Perhaps, it’s how they both have deep longing for something permanent? In Ryan’s case, it is of course a common knowledge but with Archer, he’s unconsciously yearning for it that it’s almost heartbreaking.

Readers, please employ your patience towards Archer in the first few pages at least. The guy is trying and don’t look out for a lot of steamy scenes between Ryan and Archer. There’s just a couple of it which I figured isn’t really necessary in the story but yeah – beware – Archer is described here as a “manwhore” and ya’know what, it’s very easy to judge him at first (I did) and I admit I was wrong to do so.

Ryan is well, he’s almost perfect, and I loved his easy countenance with every situation and just life in general. He’s not boring but he’s what Archer exactly needed.

This family of four and their story is such a joy to read. I’m sure glad that my first book from this author was this wonderful story! I would definitely look out for more of her books within the year!

Highly recommended, this one is.

Book Review: Clockwork Heart (Clockwork Love, #1) – Heidi Cullinan [ARC]

Clockwork HeartRELEASE DATE: Feb 2, 2016
Format: Novel
Genre: Historical/Alternate History/Steampunk
Length: 240 pages, ebook
Publisher: Samhain Publishing
Cover Artist: Kanaxa
Ebook ISBN: 9781619227231
Print ISBN: 9781619233959
Characters: Johann Berger, Cornelius Stevens

First, let me tell you what I told myself immediately after finishing this book – “I need to reread the whole thing right away and enjoy it all over again!”lol. I just loved it! I feel that no matter how good the previous books of the author are (e.g., Nowhere Ranch, Dance With Me, Love Lessons etc…), this book just totally surpassed them all or maybe I’m still on that after-reading-an-awesome-book glow but seriously man, this is now my favorite book from Heidi Cullinan.

The book is a steampunk novel set in an alternate historical universe involving a beautiful, kinky tinker named Cornelius Stevens who saves an enemy soldier using clockwork parts. The soldier is Johann Berger, who woke up half-human half clockwork and who eventually learned that he’s got the clockwork heart as well – a weapon that their warring countries would kill to get their hands into. Chaos ensues as the enemy hunt Conny, Johann and their pirate crew to obtain the clockwork heart. With their hearts and lives on the line – they both knew that it’s going to be all or nothing for them.

Je te veux dans la bouche. Prends-moi par derrierre, la sur la table, et fais-moi hurler de plaisir. Tu veux bien faire cela pour moi, mon doux Johann?

Sex and (almost) magic. Truth. It’s deliciously magical with the steamy sex between Cornelius and Johann and some random… … … … yep, you get the point. The setting was truly fascinating to read I feel like being transported along with the characters. Yes! The old Europe! I can smell the air of Calais, I could see the Austrian Mountains, the Alps etc… The side characters are awesome! At first, I didn’t like Valentin (Conny’s BFF) but he eventually mellowed and I feel like his story needs to be told asap as well. I think I would be seeing his book in the future (with Captain Crawley, hopefully). Oh, and the pirates! Whoop! What a kick-ass crew! They should put a “Love Wins” tagline in their airship to be honest because they’re just so freaking awesome!

I couldn’t stress enough the super-awesomeness of this book! It’s just too lovely! I simply cannot wait what’s next for the series! What an epic start of a series! Heidi, you missy are way too fab! Highly recommended!

Book Review: Getting Him Back – K.A. Mitchell [ARC]

GEtting HIm BackRELEASE DATE: Feb 15, 2016
Format: Novel
Genre: New Adult / Romance / Contermporary
Length: 133 pages, ebook
Publisher: Carina  Press
Ebook ASIN: B018QI6TPM
Characters: Ethan Monro, Wyatt Reese

Charming, quirky, and unpretentious – I didn’t think that I would be describing this book as such when I first read its blurb. I feel like I’ve already read a thousand books like it but you know what – once I started reading it, I just couldn’t seem to stop because it was that good.

The book begins with tall and gangly Ethan Monroe following his high school sweetheart Blake to college only to get dumped on his first day there.

Enter the mysterious Wyatt Reese. Blake’s roommate and possibly his straight roommate. Ethan’s intention upon approaching Wyatt was to get information on how to win Blake back.  As he got to know the guy and their friendship deepens, Ethan thought it’s time to move forward from his ex and ventured into a new goal of making Wyatt believe that what they have is worth taking a chance.

I loved that even if the book is told entirely from Ethan’s POV, the author was still able to explore each (other) character and their personalities. I loved the attention the author gave to Waardenburg syndrome. I find it refreshing when the main character/s isn’t all supermodel in appearance where it almost always seemed like the prevailing pattern into describing physical perfection for book characters. Ethan here is not physically godlike here. Wyatt isn’t Christian Grey material either but both guys are realistically regular guys you can easily relate to. So that’s me basically saying that I both loved Ethan and Wyatt and thought they’re perfectly matched because of their opposite personality. Opposites attract yeah?

I also liked Ethan’s friends. Connor and Makayla are fabulous secondary characters! Both should be back for more because what is college life without your regular booze-buddy and your humans vs zombies playmates?

Overall, it was a perfect read for me. I won’t change anything in it because I’m perfectly content with the characters, their personality and the storyline and to where it is going in the future. This one I highly recommend.

About The Author
At a very early age, K.A. Mitchell decided that Ken and G.I. Joe made a much cuter couple than Ken and Barbie and was perplexed when invitations to play Barbie fell off sharply. Today she still loves hanging out with imaginary friends and making up stories. Even better, people pay her to read about them. Now the author of over twenty gay romances, she guarantees happy endings for even the surliest of heroes, despite all their baggage.

Book Review: Dangerous Territory – Cari Z.

Dangerous Territoryebook, 56 pages
Published January 13th 2016 by Less Than Three Press

I just loved Cari Z’s writing style. Her characters are fresh, quirky, and just oh-so-goddamn-adorable! This novella just hit the mark for me when it comes to originality and impact because after the last page, I’m still yearning for more! Surely, it’s not going to stop here yeah?

The story started when Carter’s evil brother-in-law was trying to take over their family ranch immediately after his father’s death. To get hold of his inheritance and start on his own, he needs to get to the cattle market before his brother-in-law and the only way to make that happen is to pass through Mason Canyon – a snake-infested terrain and a shifter territory as well. Rani, his shifter guide who agreed to help him out turned out to be not what he expected which rekindled is hope that things may not be that bleak for him and his family.

I totally enjoyed reading this even if it’s way too short for my liking (Cmon’ I need more). I loved that it’s written in the ‘western’ genre with a twist. And no. The “being gay” of the character is not the twist obviously. It’s the shifting thingy that made it more interesting and I loved that Rani’s animal form is surprisingly different from what I expected. I won’t spoil it for you guys, but it’s really so cute if you’d ask me. At least they’re cute in pictures. Hah!

According to the book’s publisher (Less Than Three Press), this book is part of The Devil’s Land collection, a set of unrelated books written in the western genre. THIS CAN’T BE if I have a choice because there’s so much to explore in this story. There’s the question about his family (his sister Millie, Keena, Getrude and even the evil Percy) and there’s more about the shifters. Okay, perhaps I’m getting way ahead of myself but seriously – this one’s a wonderful read and I kid you not about the talent of this author.

If you want to check her out before this hit online – do try her Panopolis series – gawd, that one is just beyond!

Book Review: The Wild One (Brooklyn Girls, #3) – Gemma Burgess

The Wild One[This review contain spoiler-ish ranting so proceed at your own risk] I’m very happy that this third book is finally about Coco. I loved Coco and her always-happy character and I’ve been dying to read her story since the first book! Here, Coco narrates her feelings on living in Brooklyn with her sister and three other friends, her job as an assistant preschool teacher and her quest for her one true love.

To easily understand Coco, you need to know three things on her “Happy List”

  1. She wants to be thin.
  2. She wants to fall in love.
  3. She wants to figure out what I’m going to do with the rest of my damn life.

Uhm, yes. Apparently, Coco has some body issue and many other things that make me want to shake her so bad because she just got everything wrong and I’m glad that she decided to finally take some control and speak up!

The first half of the story will make your blood-pressure gettin’ out of control because of so many reasons especially if you’ve been following the girls since the first book. I will mention a few of ‘em. Pia – gawd, I just wanna smack her into oblivion. Really, Miss Burgess – was that even necessary? Pia who professed to be crazy, madly in love with Aidan and that happened? I was like – fucking fuck! One of my biggest pet peeves! Ack! Ack! I’m never gonna like Pia again. Never. What a sl**. Okay, that was my rant number one which I just really need to vent out.

Number 2. Julia. You are a crazy control freak. Yes, you and your dad are trying to protect Coco but jeez, she’s 21 for fuck’s sake! I was like rolling my eyes all over that scene where they had this family meeting and don’t even get me started with that Topher guy. Really, that’s it? Where are the “avengers?” when you needed them?

And where the hell was Sam in this story? After that ending in the second book, you’d give us a page of him and that’s it? I feel like pulling all my hair everywhere because it’s just so frustrating. I understand that this was Coco’s time to shine but man’ really? Why’d you do that to us???

Let’s go to the positive side of this third book. Joe. Glorious Irish-Joe. I loved Joe. I am in love with his character. I daresay he’s the best thing to ever happen in this book. I loved their whole set-up and the chemistry between him and Coco was too adorbs! I feel like he’s the saving grace of this whole book.

At the end of the book, we still got the same Coco. I wished the change in her was drastic. She was still very forgiving (teehee sorry I just have to write this one – I think I’ve some anger management issue LOL and I want ‘em girls to really served it with the guys and not just some lame revenge kind of thing) and very much the same Coco with a new goal and a hot new boyfriend. It was a fun read nonetheless. Will I be reading more from this series? Yes, I’d love to read something from Madeleine and see the development with the rest of the girls’ respective relationships.

Book Review: In the Hours of Darkness (No Man’s Land #1) – Tygati

In the Hours of Darkness (No Man's Land #1)Charlie Colcord is the sheriff of the frontier planet No Man’s Land a.k.a. Noman. He’s the protector of the people of Deadwood Gulch along with his fellow riders – why riders? Well, they do have dragons as their main weapon to combat the deadly creatures inhabiting the Noman Mountains.

Only Charlie has a secret that his fierce and loyal dragon Zorevan could only ever understand.

So what I’ve just written above was probably a bit vague because I really don’t want to divulge any more information since this was a fairly quick read with only 10,000 words in it but I’m telling you guys, every single word in the story, I totally  ate up. I loved the whole world building, which reminds me a bit of Pandora from the movie Avatar only set in a desert ala Mad Max – and yes, with dragons!  I super adore Charlie and his dragon Zorevan – like, I’m super in love with their relationship! There was a bit of action in here but nothing that changes the plot from the beginning to end. This first book is basically an introduction of Charlie, his dragon and the whole Deadwood Gulch’s inhabitants.

I am now very excited to learn more about how Zorevan “found/claimed” Charlie in the first place. How did he exactly become the sheriff instead of his cousin Jack? Does Mayor Burke have the hots for Charlie? What is to become of Jeremy “Troublemaker” Jasper in the future? Jeez, so many possibilities for this series! I just hope that the author will be consistent in writing the vibrancy of her story and its characters! Super highly recommended this one is!

Book Review: Storytime – K. Lynn

StorytimeIt has been hard for sci-fi writer James Murphy to move on since the death of his partner a year ago. But at the urging of his agent, he volunteered for a weekly storytime at a local library as a way to start socializing again. This is where he meets the children’s librarian, David.

David is twenty-five years younger and has the exuberance that James was attracted to. What started out as friendship turns into romance. Will James be able to leave the past behind and moved on to a future with a promise of a second chance at love?

This endearing short story is a fun read that will put a smile on your face. It’s an easy read where it’s futile to ask the question how will they be able to put both of their past behind and just go on and be in love.  It’s a natural occurrence after all to search for human comfort and both David and James found that with each other. As simple as that.

I’m not even bothered with David reminding James of his former beau. Like, would I ask if it’s simply a rebound thing? Nah – fortunately, I didn’t. That happens right? I believe that the heart can love as many people as they want – sappy I know, but it’s true.

I personally would’ve liked a longer version of this but I think the ending gave a perfect note implying what the future will be ahead of them.

A lovely read indeed.

Book Review: Fox-Hat and Neko – August Li

Fox Hat and NekoReading this whole thing feels like reading a manga in a subdued mood (at least I know I was in one since it took me three full days to finish this). I mean, I really liked 60% of the book but I’ve a bit of a concern with the length of the story and the development of the story arc of each character.

Here, we have Tokyo high school student Tsukino Ayumu who got sent by his parents to the small fishing village of Yuuyake to spend a school year and live with his grandfather. Ayumu’s not concern about being notice or standing out –

“It was what he had done his entire life – tried to stick to the middle of the pack, do the minimum expected, draw no attention, just blend it.

But his first few days in Yuuyake didn’t agree with Ayumu’s gameplan. In his new school, he was immediately befriended by the poor fisherman’s son Ikehara Hariku along with two girl classmates, champion archer Shizuka and aspiring artist Chou. As they go with the usual middle school flow, something big seems to be brewing in their small village that will require Ayumu and his friends’ participation.

Getting plagued by violent dreams who terrorized the children of the village and nearby places, the group tried to fight the so-called dream phantoms with the help of the mysterious Fox-Hat and Neko who came out of nowhere and seems to know more about what’s happening than Ayumu himself.

Now, it’s up to Ayumu and his friends to defeat the one creating the chaos in the dream world and create their own destiny in the process.

It’s very easy to like the characters here most especially Ayumu and Hariku. There’s just something special about their friendship. This story was told from multiple perspectives and I thought it’s more fun that way but I somehow feel the need to go back a page of two to remember who’s actually doing the narration at times. Those times are minimal though. The drawings at the end of each chapter will give us a preview of what’s about to happen next.

I find the storytelling a bit slow for my liking no matter how likable the characters are. I wished it was a bit shorter because it’s basically repeating itself midway through the story. It’s also a bit disconcerting reading about the characters’ feeling towards each other. Like, who will end up with whom. Of course, they’re still young but I got prickly about the whole “who’s doing who” business. I got alarmed when Neko started doing “it” with Ayumu but finally knowing their history in the past – I somehow see the connection they had. I was a bit mad though about the “I’m not gay” declaration by Hariku. I though it was clearly alluded from the start that he will reciprocate Ayumu’s feelings but dear lawd! No! It was pretty annoying to be honest. Of course not everyone in the genre can be gay but I wished Ayumu got a happy-ending of some sort for himself.

The “Mr. Mallory” angle was a bit predictable but I loved that the author made his character very much interesting and given how the story ended, I would expect a second book in the future and I do have this niggling feeling that Ayumu and Mallory will be more than friends in the future. He’s older like 10 years or so than Ayumu right? I’d say that’s totally fine!

I don’t really know the culture in Japan especially in the secluded areas there so I’m kind of on the fence about how receptive the people are about same sex relationship. I mean it’s great and all but it’s not very realistic at all. Still, I loved how the author focuses on narrowing each character’s feelings towards each other and their plans for the future.

I’d really like to read a second book related to this one because it just felt unfinished. August Li surely knows how to write some really good premise but sometimes, I’m missing his point with some of the scenes which felt contrived at times. Overall though, I’m giving this book a four-star rating because despite my dislike with some of the characters development, I still think that it’s a solid book that represents the youth challenging them to be free about choices and believing in their ability and basically just being a decent human being.
