There are only three candidates this year who are out to prove themselves worthy of a Binibining Pilipinas crown after failing their first and even second and third try at the nationals. They may not have the hype of MJ Lastimosa (2011, 2012, 2014 – Miss Universe Philippines), Maria Angelica de Leon (2013, 2017 – Bb. Pilipinas International), and Pia Wurtzbach (2013, 2014, 2015 – Miss Universe Philippines, Miss Universe) but they will surely be stepping up their game this time around.
Juliana Kapeundl just landed in the Top 15 last year – her first attempt. I personally predicted her as my first runner-up because truth be told, the girl is too gorgeous in person.
Here’s what I wrote about her last year: Juliana is a living barbie doll in person and I just want her to train more and come back next year because this girl just screams “Miss International!” but not this year though.
This is Jezha Huelar’s third attempt to win a crown after her being 2nd Runner-up in 2016 and a Top 15 finish last year, Jezha is more than ready for her final hurrah in the country’s biggest pageant stage!
What I thought about her return last year: Jezha Huelar’s second runner-up finish last year helped her gain confidence and the training she went through along with the 2016 queens was the result of her fierce return into the compeition. I was never a fan before but she’s slowly growing on me. Those legs are to die for! Not sure how many brownie points she had acquired from Madame Stella over the course of her runner-up reign but for now, I am willing to bet that she’d get one of the crowns – the ‘Globe’ one presumably.
Finally, we have 2012 semifinalist Karen Gallman. IMO, she’s the strongest amongst the three returnees this year. Her face to die for and I’ve a feeling that gaining life experiences overseas will work in her favors although I am a bit worried about her height. Pero sabi nga ng Tita Beks ko, at the end of the day BEAUTY pageant parin ang Binbinin (At the end of the day, Binibini is still a BEAUTY pageant).
Who do you think has the best chances to clinch a crown this time around?
So I was actually late at the venue and the male host Xian Lim just announced the winners of some special awards and right after was the announcement of the top 12 semifinalist. It was an easy call because my favorites were all called except for Jaine Hidalgo. I really wondered why? Hmmm. Anyways, I was very satisfied with most of the candidates answers during the Q and A portion with just a couple of ladies faltering in answering their questions – those were Liezl Alcantara who apparently “misheard” the question and Annalie Forbes who really had “an old fashion choking moment” but was allowed to answer beyond the 30 seconds limit. I thought she handled herself well and was still very poised. It was just surprising that she end-up winning 2nd runner-up with Elaine Kay Moll, the tallest candidate hailed as the first runner-up.
I actually predicted the two main winners correctly, that is Nicole Schmitz for Binibining Pilipinas – International and Katrina Dimaranan for Binibining Pilipinas- Tourism but I was in total awe when they annouced Janine Tugonon’s name as the successor for the Miss Universe – Philippines. I mean, it was a bit expected since there were rumors that the title was already reserved for her but I really thought that crowd’s favorite MJ Lastimosa outshined her all through out the evening who is also a repeater of the pageant.
Anyways, it’s all good though. Janine still has about eight months to prepare for the Miss Universe and I’m hoping that she’ll represent our country as well as the other two in such a way that we could be proud of!
Good luck Ladies!

Here are some of the pics that I took from this year’s Binibining Pilipinas Parade Of Beauties that was held last Saturday, March 25 around Araneta Center, Cubao. This time though, the candidates are clad in some elegant one-piece bikinis which I thought are more appropriate compared to previous years where contestants are in two-piece skimpy bikinis. Kudos to the BBP team!

I know that the names and pictures of the candidates for this year’s Binibining Pilipinas have been posted all around the blogosphere but I thought of still posting ’em for reference. At first, I thought this year’s such a disaster but after the girls got all glammed-up, it turned out to be another strong batch of hopefuls! Rumor has it that there’ll be five crowns at stake come coronation night. I would have to confirm that before I post any updates about the pageant 🙂
Each year, girls from all over the country flocks in Araneta Center, Cubao to submit their application to the most prestigious and oldest national beauty pageant in the Philippines headed by Mrs. Stella Marquez de Araneta, the Binibining Pilipinas. All of these girls are hoping to be part of the official candidates of this pageant that send girls to international pageants such as Miss Universe, Miss International and Miss World (until in 2011 when the Miss World Organization decided to grant its franchise to another pageant director that conceived the first Miss World-Philippines Beauty Pageant )
After the great success of Venus Raj and Shamcey Supsup from the past two edition of the Miss Universe – where both placed as 4th runner-up and 3rd runner-up in 2010 and 2011 respectively, pageant pundits are more than ever eager to see the girls that will follow their footsteps.
Some of the girls rumored to join this year’s edition are ABS-CBN talent and Channel V VJ Megan Young, Hotel singer and model, Ali Forbes, TV5’s Arci Munoz and the two runners-up from last year, Janine Tugonon and MJ Lastimosa – both hoping to do a Dianne Necio this year.
This year is expected to surpass last year’s edition and the battle for the two grand slam crowns (Universe and International) is said to be a bloody one come finals night. Each camp managing some of the girls who are said to be joining are secretly watching each other’s back to measure the caliber of the girls that they will be fielding for the screening.
If you think that you’ve got the guts and the goods to take over the Universe and the International beauty arena – the screening is extended until February 7, 2012. Will this year live to its hype? Let’s wait and see….
