At a young age of 15, Jacobs already worked as a stockboy at Charivari, a clothing botique in New York City. He then studied at Parsons The New School for Design which gave him accolades such as the Perry Ellis Gold Thimble Award, Chester Weinberg Gold Thimble Award and Design Student of the Year Award –all in the same year of 1984.
Jacobs designed his first collection for Reuben Thomas, Inc., and eventually began designing for Perry Ellis after the demise of its founder. In 1986, he designed his first collection bearing the Marc Jacobs label and the following year was awarded the Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent, which is the fashion industry’s highest tribute given by The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA)
1997 was the year when Jacobs was appointed Creative Director of luxury French fashion house, Louis Vuitton creating the company’s first ready-to-wear line.
In April 2010, Jacobs was included in TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World.
Her Fashion Muses includes celebrity designer-fashionista Victoria Beckham, Actressess Kirsten Dunst,Wynona Ryder, Dakota Fanning and director Sofia Copolla – her number one muse who starred in ads for both Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton label.
On a personal note, Jacobs who is openly gay has been married with Advertising Executive Lorenzo Martone that didn’t last for a year.
