Battle Of The Covers: Pinay Supermodels vs Beauty Queens

Pinay International Models and The Pinay Miss Universe runners up!

Pinay International Models and The Pinay Miss Universe runners up!

All of ‘em gave pride and honor to our country and in these two uber-fierce covers – they show us how they werk it! In a good- natured comparison between these two magazine covers (from Mega’s June 2011 cover featuring Ford Supermodels’ Charlene Almarvez, Charo Ronquillo and Danica Magpantay and Preview Magazine’s May 2013 issue featuring the Miss Universe Philippines’ runners-up Janine Tugonon, Shamcey Supsup and Maria Venus Raj,) whose group do you think is fiercer?

Binibining Pilipinas 2013 – Its Golden Winners, History And Random Thoughts

It was aptly dubbed as the Binibining Pilipinas Gold as the pageant celebrates its 50th edition this year. With the finals night concluding last Sunday, the set of winners were announced with a unanimous approval from pageant fans and the likes.

Ara Arida MUP

24 year-old Laguna native Ariella “Ara” Arida was hailed victorious in white as she was crowned Miss Universe Philippines. I actually didn’t expect her to win the title because she played it under the radar for me.  I thought it was the highly favored candidates like Charmaine Elima or Maria Angelica De Leon would be winning the crown prior to the pageant night. Lo and behold, Arida stepped it up big time and sailed through the pageant night like she was really supposed to be there. She was hailed as the best in swimsuit which easily catapult her to the semis (being called first) and she totally nailed the question and answer thus giving her the Miss Universe Philippines crown. A totally deserved win!

Bea Rose Santiago International

Bea Rose Santiago’s win was expected. When she glided into that stage that night – I was just waiting for the results and see her head with a crown. After the question and answer, I thought she would end up winning the Miss Universe Philippines title. I was happy though that she bagged the Binibining Pilipinas International title. I have a feeling that she will  be the country’s 5th Miss International winner! The girl has got it all  – beauty, body and brains!

Cindy Miranda BBP Tourism

Joanna Cindy Miranda was one of the  crowd’s favorite that night. She was a sight to behold in pink! She was a steady player last Sunday, did good in swimsuit and evening gown round and gave a fairly good answer during the question and answer portion when she said the one word that describe her is “UNSTOPPABLE.” She was indeed unstoppable that night. Congrats Cindy for winning the Binibining Pilipinas- Tourism!

Mutya Datul BBPSupra

Mutya! Oh Mutya! Where did you get those lovely eyes? I predicted her to win the Binibining Pilipinas Supranational and she did! Mutya was the face of the evening! Her pasarela was perfect and she glided through that stage in swimsuit and evening gown with ease! I thought she would also win the swimsuit category along with the best in evening gown award! She was truly a “Mutya” that night! Her answer during the Q&A was decent. She made an effort to answer the question in English (which she isn’t comfortable at all) and she didn’t falter anywhere in that answer! It was short but precise. Yes, her accent may be a little funny but she was a natural! We all know that it’s her weakness but she didn’t show it and she made it all the way to win one of the crowns! I initially thought that they would give her the MUP title but I am now thinking that the judges made the right decision because she could REALLY WIN the first Miss Supranational for the country – it maybe a minor pageant but it’s growing!

Pia Wurtzbach Runner Up

Lastly is the lone runner-up of this edition, Pia Wurtzbach. This feisty lady was touted to win either the Universe or International title but the other four are just stronger. The good thing about her winning runner up is that she could comeback next year until she turned 26.

Rounding up the Top 15 are (in order) #45 Imelda Schweighart, #34 Grace Yann Apuad, #13 Charmaine Elima, #43 Rhea Nakpil, #46 Amanda Navasero, #22 Ellore Noelle Punzalan, #12 Camille Carla Nazar #31 Maria Angelica De Leon, #25 Merry Joyce Respicio #33 Parul Shah.

Martin Nievera and Dawn Zulueta were the main host of the evening and previous queens Shamcey Supsup and Venus Raj are their co-hosts! It was overall a great show! I LOVED the first part when atleast 60 of the past pageant’s queens came together for the very first time on one stage and of course, the tribute to the National Director and owner of Binibining Pilipinas Madam Stella Marquez Araneta was really oh-so-touching! It was the first time that she went center stage in the 50 years of the pageant! Last Sunday was truly historical – that golden age of Binibining Pilipinas!!!

Binibini No 15 Pia Wurtzbach

Pia has been a member of ABS-CBN’s Star Magic since 2001. She’s touted to be a shoo-in for the Binibining Pilipinas-International title but don’t count her out for the MUP race. This mixed beauty from Cagayan de Oro won’t let go of that Miss Universe Philippines crown without a fight.

Here she is with her camp sisters Miss Universe Philippine delegates and Top 5 Miss Universe finalists Venus Raj – Miss Universe 2010 4th runner-up, Janine Tugonon – Miss Universe 2012 1st runner-up and Shamcey Supsup – Miss Universe 2011 3rd runner-up. Janine Tugonon’s Evening Gown Portrait For Miss Universe 2012

Janine Tugonon Evening Gown PortraitHere’s Janine posing for the camera wearing this yellow chiffon beaded gown. In all honesty, this gown isn’t working at all. The color does suit Janine’s skintone but the design is horrific. It looks dated and too heavy for her. I am hoping that she’d use a different evening gown come preliminaries and finals night just like what Venus and Shamcey did during their stints.

Vogue Philippines?

As of 2010, there are 18 National edition of Vogue with Turkey as the most recent country to launch their own edition last March with Jessica Stam gracing the cover . I can’t help but think of the day when the Philippines would come out with it’s very own edition. Apparently, there is a need to get (purchase) the license to have such publication and there are probably tons of factors to consider as well.

While browsing the net regarding the “acquisition of a franchise,” I learned that the idea of having an African Vogue was actually rejected by Conde Nast, the publisher of the magazine. That is Africa! And I thought that fashion is even bigger in Africa than in the Philippines so I’m thinking that it’d be close to impossible to get the franchise of Vogue anytime in the near future.

An imaginary cover of Vogue Africa by Mario Epanya who’s pushing to get the license to publish the magazine’s African edition.

At the moment, there are five Asian territories who publishes their own Vogue Edition. They are Nippon (Japan), China, India, Taiwan and Korea — something that I do not understand because clearly, Philippine fashion magazines are doing pretty well in our country and our fashion industry is very much alive! I could just imagine Vogue flourishing here! I am still hopeful though, that we’d be able to see the day of the release of the Philippines’ Vogue maiden issue!

The New Miss Universe: Mexico’s Ximena Navarette

Conquering the Universe this year is the fair lady from Mexico who has been a frontrunner to the crown eversince she won the Nuestra Belleza México in 2009. Twenty-two year-old Ximena Navarrete Rosete battled it out with 82 equally beautiful candidates all over the world to emerge as the queen of the Universe. She’s only the second Mexican delegate to win the prestigious title after Lupita Jone’s major win in 1991, Ironically both won at the same venue –Las Vegas.

Just how did Ximena planned her successful conquest?

As simple as this.

The Runner-Up’s

1st Runner-Up: Miss Jamaica – Yendi Phillipps

2nd Runner-Up: Miss Australia – Jesinta Campbell

(who was also voted by fellow contestants as the most congenial)

3rd Runner-Up: Anna Poslavska

(I just don’t understand why she placed this high)

4th Runner-Up: Miss Philippines – Maria Venus Raj

(the crowd favorite)

We thought everyone but Miss Ukraine deserved their spot! We’d rather see Miss Ireland or Miss Albania on Miss Ukraine’s place.

Binibining Pilipinas 2010 Winners: Will They Make It?

Three ladies were chosen once again at the Big Dome to represent the Philippines in the three most prestigious beauty competition in the world–the Miss International, Miss Universe and the Miss World. In this year’s pageant, 24 lovely Filipinas battled it out to grab one of the three crowns.

Ma.Venuz Raj (pronounce as RAH) from Bato, Camarines Sur was crowned as the Bb.Pilipinas-Universe, with her towering 5’9″ physique, elegant walk and incredible tan — Ms. Raj was actually one of the pageant’s favorite winning Miss Friendship, Best In Terno and Best In Long Gown. I also have this feeling that she’d have a very good chance of atleast making it to the semi-finals come Miss Universe 2010 because of her semblance to some latinas who are ruling the Donald Trump owned pageant.

The Binibining Pilipinas-International went to the GMA 7 contract artist – Krista Arrieta Kleiner (the winner of Miss USA-Philippines) and girlfriend of Philippine RNB prince Jay-R. Krista, along with Helen Nicolette Henson (2nd Runner Up) gave the best answers of the night in the Q&A portion of the pageant. She was asked about what will she talk about with President Obama if she were to have five minutes with him. The eloquence in her answer proved that she actually deserved the title. She will be representing the Philippines in Shanghai, China on October 2010.

Manila Bulletin Reader’s Choice Awardee and Bulacan-native Czarina Gatbonton snag the Binibining Pilipinas-World title- a controversial decision, yet again — she’s the only contestant who answered in “Tagalog” and when asked if she were to live again, what would she be? She answered “Puno” as in a Tree. Everyone except her supporters were puzzled by her winning over crowd favorite Helen Nicolette Henson who received 3 awards and was crowned the 2nd princess. Gatbonton will be representing the country come November 2010–possibly in Vietnam. As of this point, the Philippines has yet to win the Miss World.

Diane Elaine Samar Necio of Albay was the night’s first runner up. She is also the current 2009 Miss Bicolandia- 1st Runner Up. Always a runner up. lmao

Helen Nicolette Henson of Pampanga , 2nd Runner up.

I am not quite sure if we stand a chance in the International competitions. I’ve mention that I think Venus has a slight chance of making it to the semi-finals. If I were to judge I would’ve pick Krista to represent the Miss Universe or Miss World (she could actually make it to the semi-finals by merely getting the Best In Talent- an award she got at the Binibini). For Miss World–we’d probably end up empty-handed once again for the Nth time. Czarina just doesn’t click for me as Miss World material. I was hoping that Nicolette Henson will be chosen for Miss International but unfortunately the judges were unfavorable for her.

– Let’s all hope for the best fellow flips . Out of all the three winners– I’d say Krista has the best chance of making it.
